VILLEFRANCHE-SUR-MER: A BEAUTIFUL HIDEAWAY ON THE CÔTE D'AZUR
Facing a deep water harbour, this picturesque seaside town is painted in ice cream colors of pink, orange and yellow, with stairways climbing up the hills to terraces and narrow streets sometimes running under house arches. It is just down the road from Nice on one side (the old town in Nice is barely 3 kilometres west) and Monaco on the other (7 kilometres east) so the visitor can easily experience the seaside promenades, architecture, opera house, concert halls and casinos of Nice or the casinos and other features of Monaco - both easily accessible by car, bus or train.
Nice-- which with a population of over 300,000 residents is the fifth most populated city in France-- is very different than the comparative serenity of Villefranche, which still looks and feels much like the fishing village it once was. There is still a festival in February when the fishermen decorate their fishing boats and throw flowers at each other and the spectators – accompanied by a parade, music and costumes. .
It is a town that Jean Cocteau called “a source of myth and inspiration” – a town that has drawn Cocteau and other artists, film makers, and celebrities, including the Rolling Stones, who recorded Exile on Mainstreet there. It was the location for such films as Hitchcock’s ‘To Catch a Thief’, the James Bond thriller ‘Never Say Never Again’, Robert de Niro’s ‘Ronin’, and the Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner ‘Jewel of the Nile’, and such stars as Tina Turner and Sean Connery have luxurious villas near the town.
When you arrive by train in Villefranche, walk down an incline and through a small square (the Place due Conseil – at one time the center of the town’s government) onto a narrow street (rue du Poilu – named after the soldiers who left by train for World War I and didn’t have time for shaving on the battlefield (“poil” meaning “hair”)). It's a 5-10 minute walk, and you will find yourself in the midst of a beautiful Mediterranean town with shops and restaurants and a baroque style church – Eglise Saint-Michel which was built in the 1750s. (It replaced a smaller 14th century church.) Most of the structures on rue du Poiluand the rest of the town were constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries.
Particularly interesting is the rue Obscure - towards the west side of the town – a covered , dark and narrow street harkening back to medieval times. It was dug in about 1220 as a place to protect the town people from bombardment from the sea.
As you leave the train station, look out to the sea across a wall on your left and below you can see see the kilometre-long beach which (unlike the highly populated stone beaches in Nice) is a sand beach and is seldom crowded.
The old harbour of la Darse dates back to the 17th century. It was originally opened for the galleys of the Duke of Savoy, and is now a marina with dockyard activities for yachts. It is also the location of the Observatoire Oceanologique de Villefranche, the Pierre and Marie Curie University of Paris, and the French National Centre for Scientific Research. Not far from the hotel, there is a quiet and almost empty small stone beach.
You can reach this part of town by taking a short walk on a narrow stone path along the water around the edge of the imposing stone battlements of the Citadel– built as a fortification after the town’s sacking and occupation by the Franco-Turkish armies in 1543 and now a center for government and art (see below).
The deep water harbor at the foot of the town, sitting between two beautiful peninsulas (Cap Ferrat and Cap de Nice) is one of the deepest natural harbors in the Mediterranean - attracting large cruise ships-and is considered one of the most beautiful in that part of the world.
We looked for a long time to locate a holiday home and we fell in love with this apartment and its location, the charm of the village is timeless and wanted to have our holiday home here.
We have made lots of local friends, it’s very safe and the location cannot be beaten.
Stephen & Bella purchased this apartment in 2008
Location is just fantastic, Rustic French charm
We chose the apartment location very carefully as we wanted to easily reach it from Nice airport. The location in the village makes easy walking to the beach, restaurants, shops harbour and public transport all easy. The train station in the village takes you to all of France and Italy. The village is 14th Century with a wonderful rustic French ambiance
There is no need to travel far from this apartment as you will be genuinely staying in the most beautiful part of the South of France. There’s no need to pretend here, but rather just enjoy. Most guests are happy to stay put for their entire stay: The restaurant locally are extraordinary also within 200 yards of the apartment you can plunge into the Mediterranean Sea. We have spent 3 vacations here, the place is wonderful. We always take a limousine from the airport and it cruise's all the way along the sea front of Nice to our apartment it's a wonderful way to arrive at the apartment where we're greeted by our Richard (the housekeeper) a charming smiling Englishman who chose to make the village his home he's always helpful always welcoming. We were given his telephone number for absolutely anything needed encouraged to call him and our 2 setts if keys to the apartment. the apartment is situated excellently for the restaurants, the sea and all amenities, it's fresh very quite and has a lovely outlook definitely a relax feel to it.
You can sleep in the double bed looking out at the stars, you can eat alfresco on the balcony and book a restaurant a simple walk round the corner and there hope to spot a famous face.
The restaurants are wonderful with that no rush service. And YES we saw Sir Elton John who gets onto his pilot boat 50 yards from the apartment with his children and David Walliams also
We also saw Tom Hanks eating at our restaurant - and as our children get so excited we decide to make this there evening purpose they he'd down to the restaurants and book the best celeb spotting tables for our arrival and wait for us down there - it's simply lovely. And the food is wonderful it make a great evening.
Of course you can eat at the apartment as it's surrounded by good local shops and dine on the balcony whilst playing a board game with a bottle of fine wine and the children relaxing watching one of the many DVDs provided and there are fantastic local walks which are plentiful for daytime and evenings walking
Our day times were spent with the children booked at the Club Nautique St Jean Cap Ferrat (this is reachable using the small hoppa bus and takes 10 minuets to reach the club) where the children enjoyed their half day sailing courses while I wait relaxed on the beach at the club for the morning we are also able to walk to The Grand Hotel for afternoon tea (this is a must do) wow what a place! and then catch the hoppa bus back to the apartment for the evening in the meantime my husband enjoys a motorboat hire in the bay or enrolee for a morning of scuba diving
The owner is correct you will be staying in a lovely apartment in the most wonderful location, there is simply no need to travel outside the village and a car isn't necessary but it's a guests choice
I want to stay here!!! More and more.....
Booking progress was smooth, payments made easy and the apartment was cosy and charmingly as described.
Key collection made easy and the village a hidden gem. I have stayed at this same apartment 3 times and will continues to stay here.
We have just returned from a week's holiday in this lovely part of the world.
There were five of us - myself, my husband and our three teenagers. Our kids shared the twin room and the youngest slept comfortably on a pull out bed.
The flat is ideally located and within easy walking distance to everything that Ville Franche has to offer. There is a beautiful bakery up the road (from where we bought fresh bread and croissants each morning), various other shops, pharmacies, bars and restaurants. There is also a play park at the top of the street for smaller children.
The beach is also a 10 minute walk away.
We bought fresh produce from the local market on Wednesday and Saturday (again, just up the road) and had a great time exploring the antiques market on Sunday down near the seafront.
The bus service to Nice and Monaco is very cheap and reliable and the bus stops are also at the top of the road. The train station is near the beach and we were able to get the train to and from Nice airport.
We very much enjoyed our family time and most evenings at some point we spent time on the balcony with a glass of wine or two, playing cards and having a laugh.
Our children appreciated the free wi -fi!
Overall, we had a fabulous stay and could easily have stayed another week.
So pleased to have found this hidden gem within the listings. Return visit to this wonderful top floor apartment in the magical Villefranche-Sur-Mer. The apartment as always spotless and key collection from Richard a breeze. Cannot recommend this apartment highly enough for it's close proximity to the beach and waterfront coupled with the bus stop for regular buses to Nice and Monaco. The apartment is as described and the photographs an accurate depiction of the interior. Perfect for a family or couple wanting a home from home in the South of France.
With my husband we opted to stay out of season for 4 weeks to learn French at a local school before moving onto Paris.
We both had a wonderful time. The apartment was perfect and the welcome gifts left by Stephen were much appreciated, including wine. It felt like home the moment we set foot through the door.
The apartment is as described, very clean and properly proportioned. The kitchen is fully stocked with every conceivable utensil and coffee maker. The views from the balcony are amazing. The is an abundance of travel books and guides together with a folder containing put together by owner with instructions on use of equipment and tips on where to visit and eat etc.
We chose well. The apartment is in a great central location, close beach, restaurants and the bus stop for travel into Nice (15 mins) or Monaco (30 mins) and beyond. Tip, ensure you choose an apartment close to the old town. Other, more modern apartments are built into the mountain side, and will entail a long walk, up many steps or winding roads to reach.
Out the main door to the market square took me less than a minute and I'm not the fastest of walkers. Not all restaurants were open in November. Highly recommend though is the Cosmo Bar, open all day and cooked salmon to perfection.
Yes we would return again, yes we would return to Stephen's apartment and yes we would not hesitate to recommend to family and friends. Will treasure our memories of our stay for many years to come.
This is a delightful apartment just as you see from all the reviews. My family have rented through VRBO 2 years in a row this is by far the best to date. First of all, Stephen & Bella and Richard were superb as contact/manager -- everything from rental to departure went smoothly. All needs/questions answered in a timely and cheerful manner. The apartment itself is so comfortable and bright - very clean & modern. Beds are comfortable, kitchen truly nice with all equipment, condiments and cleaning supplies, living room/kitchen bright with ample seating for dining and relaxing on the balcony alfresco, WIFI works beautifully, TV, balcony absolutely great -- spent a lot of time there w/espresso or wine in hand enjoying the view, bathroom small but clean/modern & hot showers for everyone! The neighbourhood is very safe and very close by are grocery, post office, police station, bakery, grocery, restaurants, Ice cream cafe, Tourist Office, bus, and Wed/Sat/Sun market. Richard provided EXCELLENT step-by-step instructions for operating washer/dryer, oven, stove, TV & microwave. Here is the bonus -- cool breezes almost always and fireworks on any random night!
We love the charm of the French Riviera and this location gives you loads of opportunity to take day-trips. The apartment has many maps, brochures, books and bus schedules to plan your day. The staff at the Tourist Office are very friendly and helpful. It is very easy to travel to Eze, Monaco, Antibes, St. Paul de Vence, Vence, Cannes, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Nice, Tende, Ventimillia - Italy, Roquebrune, Cap Ferrat. We went to the flea market in Ventimillia twice -- found some good buys there. I would definitely recommend the 2-hr boat tour from the Villefranche harbor to Monaco & return -- very relaxing and gives you that "lifestyles of the Rich & Famous" as you pass the magnificent yachts that hug the coast. Restaurants/food in the area - wonderful! A short trip to Nice airport and pic up the helicopter to Monaco is a very exciting treat for appx 100 euros
We will definitely return -- I would recommend this apartment to anyone wanting to enjoy "home" away from home, the charm of this small city next to the Sea, & the warm & engaging French people. This was our home for a month -- in two word words "Delightfully charming"
Our very first visit to France and spent many a hour searching the various locations and holiday rentals, eventually settling for Villa Nelly. So very pleased we did. The owner of the property Steve thinks of every little detail to ensure guests have a relaxed and enjoyable stay. The apartment is on the third floor, and opens out onto a wonderful balcony. Walk out the front door, turn right and within a few minutes you're at the the harbour, beach and restaurants meaning no long walks home in the heat/sunshine. Otherwise walk out the door and turn right and within a few paces are the bus stops for journeys into Nice or Monaco. We arrived late and check in was very straight-forward and best of all a wonderful welcoming bottle of chilled wine and nibbles awaited us. The listing is accurate, apartment very clean and well-maintained and Steve was a first-rate host. Highly recommended and would have no hesitation in recommending the apartment to others.
Very reachable by foot are the Beach, shops, restaurants.
Nice Airport, Monaco, Monte Carlo, Cannes, Grass and also Italy. (By bus or Train) Your excellently located to very easily walk to the bus stop, train station, tourist office, shops, bank, butcher fishmongers and many restuarants. As well as the beach, sea, Citadel with a cinema, boat hire, harbour. A perfect escape for all
