Hale Honu (Turtle House) is our Big Island ocean view rental and is our place of refuge. We would like to share this top Hawaiian vacation area with you. Situated on the Big Island of Hawaii just twenty miles south of Kailua-Kona, Hale Honu is surrounded by a lush tropical garden, and provides a breathtaking panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, in a quiet and comfortable setting that is conducive to uplifting the light-of-heart and soothing the frazzled spirit.
From this location you are minutes from the lovely Ho'okena Beach State Park for a beach vacation of sunbathing and swimming with dolphins, or visiting the famous Place of Refuge National Historic Park, a preservation of ancient Hawaiian culture.
Also at the Honaunau Inlet you will snorkel with an endless variety of tropical fish and sea turtles. A ninety-minute drive south will bring you to Volcano National Park. Thirty minutes north are the shops and fine restaurants of Kailua.
Along the main highway north you will pass shops offering the island's best buys for Kona Coffee and Macadamia Nuts. A fruit stand offering organically grown fruits and vegetable is less than one mile north. The Kealia village store with necessities and movie rentals is a short walk to the south.

Hawaii is wonderful place to visit and a top vacation destination. The Big Island is, we think, the best of all the islands. The volcano is spectacular, we have two mountains soaring to almost 14,000 feet, it offers world class sport fishing, beautiful beaches, a rich history, the best snorkeling and most of all for our location, a grand place to just go relax and get away from the hubbub of life.
Beautiful Big Island surroundings that offer a peaceful and quiet vacation getaway! A perfect place for a romantic Hawaiian escape or a private family coastal retreat.
Hale Honu is located in a quiet tropical garden setting 800 feet above sea level with a wonderful spectacular unobstructed panoramic view of the Pacific. It is just minutes from Hookena Beach State Park (where dolphin often play) to the South and Place of Refuge National Historic Park (also a great snorkeling spot) to the North. Our guests are thrilled by the location and the overall quality of their stay. Here is a sample of comments left in our guest book.I awoke again to the wonderful sound of birdsong. We loved eating on the beautiful lanai, and what an awesome view! So very peaceful. It was a delight to have an avocado fall at my feet – great fresh guacamole. ThanksMike and CherDenver, COThis is a wonderful house. We would not have had such an amazing time without it. Everything exceeded our expectations.John and Gayle and Juan and AnaLivermore, CA and Madrid SpainThank you for providing such a lovely home. It has been a perfect haven from which to launch our adventure. We had great parties on the lanai. So many fish and turtles in Honaunau, and saw dolphins every day. Can’t wait for next time.Mark and LaurieSan Francisco, CAThanks for the use of your big house. Access to the washer/dryer is great with the seven of us. Well equipped kitchen too! Living in the country as we do, we especially liked the rural nature of your part of the island.Dick and JoanElizabeth, ILThanks for a great week in your home. We’d recommend kayaking across the bay to Captain Cook monument, even for inexperienced kayakers. Snorkeling is unbelievable near the monument. Our kids enjoyed the occasional visit out by the back fence by wild cows and pigs! Great place!Sue, Ron, Lauren and JessieAnchorage, AKIt was a very relaxing vacation that we hate to see come
Everything you'd need, is there! This is my 6th go around with VRBO and AirBnB and I've gotta tell you, I have yet to be disappointed. Hotels should take caution for with this option and the rates? Hotels are going to be a thing of the past.
Where do I begin...privacy. The foliage is grown to offer just that...and peaceful aside from the Coqui's which is fine because my family and I slept well still. Better the Coqui's up mauka (mountain) than traffic noise and sounds of O'ahu. The house is comfortable, welcoming and very spacious. We were there for an entirely sad reason, but being in this home and only a few miles from Ho'okena Beach made the mood a little bit lighter. Bob, my family and I cannot thank you enough for your hospitality. I do apologize for the late review, but I didn't want to post a modest review. I needed to post exactly what your property deserves.
I'd definitely send people your way. Mahalo Bob Hoffman a me Hale Honu!!!
We only had 3 nights here due to our scheduled but would have enjoyed a couple of weeks. Although the property was just off the highway(150 t0 200 feet), it is very private due to the lush vegetation. Two bedrooms and 3 baths and it easily sleeps 7-8. We had 7 including an infant and there was plenty of room. The kitchen is clean and well equipped. There are beach towels, boogie boards and snorkeling equipment. The lanai makes the house. We had all of our meals out there. It is very large and covered with a view of the ocean in the distance. The drive from the airport took about 45 minutes but that was the only downside. The house is convenient to Captain Cook, Two Step Beach (a great snorkeling site), a grocery store, an Hawaiian village. The Kona beaches are about a half an hour away. The other direction there is ready access to other beaches from 10 to 30 minutes away. We drove to South Point and walked most of the way to Green Sands Beach. You are closer to Kilauea Volcanoe Park than you would be in Kona but we didn't have the time to drive there because of the schedule. This is a place where we would stay again if the owner will let us. We especially liked being away from the crowds in Kona. If any of the readers are LDS (Mormons). There is a LDS ward that meets in a chapel about 5 minutes from Hale Honu.
My husband and I enjoyed our time at Bob and Nancy's lovely home in Hawaii very much. We enjoyed relaxing times on the lanai for happy hour and gorgeous sunsets; what a view! Their home is so spacious and comfortable; I enjoyed all the turtle and beach decor. The home is very quiet and private, and easy enough to drive to various locations along the Kona Coast.
We really enjoyed Ho'okena Beach; so nice and close and really a nice beach. We went on several snorkelling tours with different companies, and our favorite company was SeaQuest; I would highly recommend them for the comfort of their boat and customer service attitude. We enjoyed snorkelling at Two-Step and several snorkel boat tours to Captain Cook monument; we were thrilled with snorkelling up close with the spinner dolphins, and we did a night snorkel with the manta rays (tremendous experience)! Also saw green turtles and humpback whales. Hale Honu provides a very comfortable base to explore the beauty and ocean life of the Big Island.
We had a great time there. The house is big and beautiful, surrounded by flowering plants and free entertaining geckos. Pretty decor, but a homey beach house-style with lots of extras, such as snorkels, maps, advice, etc. Loved it. Turtles.
It really works out for us considering we're a big group and it has 3 bathrooms. You rarely see that in lots of rentals. The ocean view was beautiful and watching the sunset in the lanai was spectacular. The area was convenient for us since we were there to visit the volcanoes, Green Sand Beach, Captain Cook Monument and Two Steps. The place needs TLC. The closet door in the second bedroom was broken and was just leaning against wall. The garden needs to be taken care of. Lots of dried leaves and fallen fruits from the trees. We walked in there and the mosquitos feast on us. The screen has to be replaced too. There were lots of bugs that were able to come inside especially in the master's bathroom. It's nice to hear the birds chirping but the noise from the gecko and the coqui were really annoying.
we really enjoyed our stay here. This is a spacious 2 bed 2 bath home, there's even 2 living rooms! They had snorkel gear, a telescope on the huge covered lanai... It worked out perfectly for us. Thanks to owners Bob and Nancy for the informative and helpful letter and info they provided!
