Swanage is a beautifully restored traditional Barbadian Chattel house. It is an enchanting and tastefully decorated and furnished home - you can’t help but take back special memories from your stay!
The upper apartment is a two bedroom ensuite, with an open style living area complete with dining out onto the wonderful and picturesque verandah that overlooks the Caribbean ocean. The lower unit offers one huge bedroom ensuite, with open style living area and dining out to a verandah that is exactly 4 feet above the beach. The balconies from both the upper and lower apartments both overhang the beach itself! They can be rented separately or as a complete unit if you so desire.
It’s not possible to get any closer to gorgeous white sand beach or the ocean on the island. Relax on the patio, watch the spectacular sunsets, sip a drink and look down at the ocean literally at your feet.
There’s always the constant sound of the sea, an unforgettable view, and the gentle rustle of trade winds in the Coconut trees. You can sit on the long stretch of beach, swim and snorkel in the protected lagoon (perfect for kids) or the more adventurous can surf or snorkel the barrier reef just beyond.
Step out onto the beach. Turn left and you can walk on the boardwalk to the spectacular Rockley beach, aka Accra beach, with its famous ultra fine white sand where locals and tourists mix. Turn right and stroll along the peaceful coast towards the famous Hilton beach. Back at Swanage, you will take with you a lasting memory of the sun sinking into the horizon, and as you sit cocktail in hand, you may even see the elusive green flash.
There are three great dining choices on the boardwalk, Blakey’s, Tapas, and Naru with a half dozen others within walking distance. Also be sure to catch the Saturday farmer’s market opposite Blakey’s from 9AM to 1PM for your typical local Barbadian produce and crafts.
It’s a short walk to Lanterns mall, a great stop for groceries and general supplies, a pharmacy, health food store, Haagen Das ice cream, and tasty local and foreign food alternatives for those looking for a quick meal.
For duty free shoppers:
There are duty free shops in Worthing, five minutes by local bus or take a ten minute ride to Bridgetown. On Broad Street you will find fine jewelry shops, Cave Shepherd, a large department store, and other shops. For a great local shopping experience visit bustling Swan Street.
For history buffs:
There’s the Hastings Historic District and storied Garrison area of Barbados. It is the location of the Old Colonial Officers Quarters and Army Hospital. The Savannah comprises the main military guard buildings, with beautiful Victorian architecture complete with a large collection of old cannons, the Barbados Turf Club (Horse Racing), the historical museum, and a vast open sports area for rugby, soccer, cricket, all surrounded by walking and running tracks.

The cutest and best location on the South Coast
Upper Swanage is a gem! As soon as you enter you feel like you are in a home away from home. It is cosy and well maintained with the best views of the South Coast. We stayed here with our teenagers for our 20th Anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It was close to everything. We walked along the Boardwalk and really felt well taken care of by Tina and Philip. We would definitely recommend Swanage to anyone who wants to have a non hotel experience where they feel like they are in a central location and close to everything.
We stayed in Upper Swanage which was wonderful. We were so happy with our choice to stay here and felt it really was one of the highlights of the trip. Sitting on the porch overlooking the water and having the beach at your doorstep were fantastic. You can snorkel and watch turtles in the water directly in front of the villa. There are good restaurants within walking distance, lots to do. Felt very safe here. The apartment was very clean and homey.
Tina and Philip were very nice and helpful. They arranged transportation to and from the airport for us, met us upon our arrival even though it was very late when we got in. They were always available if needed.
We would definitely stay here again. It was a great experience.
Upper Swanage is a fantastic place to stay, the location is wonderful right on a beautiful beach, the view from the apartment was stunning! The apartment was clean and comfortable truely a home from home.
Tina and Philip made us very welcome, arranging our transport to and from the airport and welcoming us with a lovely bowl of fresh friut.
We would definitely stay here again, two weeks just didn't seem long enough!
Better than expected!
We stayed at Upper Swanage for our honeymoon and loved it! When we first arrived, Philip and Tina met us with keys and tons of tips about the island and local area. They were extremely friendly and helpful. The place was even more pretty than in the pictures. We love to cook so we bought fresh fish and ate most of our meals on the back balcony. It has an unreal view of gorgeous water and the beach. It was turtle nesting season and we saw three swim up to shore from our balcony. One laid eggs and we got to watch they whole thing up close. The house is in a great location on the island. Easy access to any place on the island. A maid came twice while we were there and the house is fully equipped with a great kitchen and ipod docking station. Would be awesome for families because of the shallow blocked off beach area. We felt like our spot on the surrounding beach was better than the other surrounding rentals. There are cheap buses that stop right out front and take you anywhere. We rented a motorbike and the roads were very easy to navigate.
Everything about Swanage was incredible. Before we got there, we started to question whether we should have done an all-inclusive resort for our honeymoon but we are SO grateful that we picked Swanage. It was so laid back and perfect for our style. It could not have been better. Thanks Philip & Tina!
We spent a week at Upper Swanage and enjoyed every minute of it. This is a delightful traditional Bajan house. The pictures truly represent what it is. The veranda over looks the beach with a perfect swimming area. The sunset views are unsurpassed. It is located at the Hastings end of the boardwalk so it is easy to walk to whatever you want. hastings is an ideal location as you have easy access to everything. Would definitely stay at Upper Swanage again.
Hastings is approximately two miles from the capital city of Barbados - Bridgetown along highway 7. It is home to the Historic Garrison area and of the Barbados Turf clubs horse racing track.
Popular surfing spots nearby include Brandons beach and Hilton Beach.
The house opens to the beach and is steps away from the popular south coast boardwalk that runs from Hastings to Rockley. Along the way you can find many fine restaurants and bars.
Golf: Barbados is indeed a golfers paradise with several existing golf courses and several more being developed. There is something for everyone as Barbados golf courses appeal to the recreational golfer and the more serious!
Our reputation as a golfing destination has been steadily growing and was further enhanced with the hosting of the 2006 World Golf Championships World Cup at one of the Sandy Lane courses. The Royal Westmoreland course is a regular host of a PGA European Tour Seniors tournament.
The nearest Golf course is Rockley Golf & Country Club which is approximately 3 km away. The par 70, 5610 yd course tests all abilities of golfers, the course can be rewarding for the big hitter but cruel on the wayward aggressive shot.
