About owner

We are a small English family with a passion for all things French: the people, the food, the architecture, the landscapes, the art.. in fact everything! It was our dream to live in a fairytale castle, and our dream came true! Though we have owned this incredible chateau for 15 years, we still pinch ourselves every time we look out of the windows onto the stunning scenery. We currently share our time between France and England, but we are always dreaming of our little corner of the Loire Valley...

owner purchased this castle in 2001

Why owner chose Mayenne

There are no photos that can describe the overall ambiance of this magical place. When we first drove down its cyclamen-lined allee, we knew that it was a chateau like no other. It looks like it is straight out of a Disney movie, complete with little bluebirds that come to the windows and roses climbing over ancient walls. Though it is full of history dating all the way back to Henry II (who himself stayed here), there is a lightness of spirit everywhere. The perfectly symmetrical layout of the property means that we are perfectly comfortable when we on our own (just the three of us), but it is equally very spacious and welcoming when full of guests (all of those ensuite bathrooms definitely help!). The craftsmanship of everything from the wood panelling to the stained-glass windows never ceases to amaze us. It is a castle, but also the happiest of homes.

What makes this castle unique

There is beautiful sense of privacy without feeling isolated; a delightful village practically next door with everything we need including restaurants, bars, a large supermarket and weekly outdoor market; a wonderful city only 15 minutes away for more cosmopolitan adventures; countless tourist attractions nearby; and it is a very family-friendly region. However, we often go for days on end without leaving the property. Fishing, canoeing, swimming, exercising, watching movies, playing games, barbecues, woodland walks, croquet, boules, badminton, trampolining, secluded spots to dream in areas of outstanding beauty...we have everything we need for ourselves and our guests.

Our very own fairytale castle!

  • 5 of 5

The most magical & fun family holiday imaginable! Our family of 12 (6 adults and 6 children) stayed for 2 weeks in this incredible castle, & it was one of the most memorable experiences of our lives. It really is like something out of a Disney movie. The surroundings were stunning and totally private.

We were sent a lot of information about the area and the property, so we knew exactly what to expect. It was easy to get to via several ferries & airports. We were warmly met on our arrival with champagne, lovely nibbles, & --as promised-- the dining table was already laid for the size of our group. There was also a super welcome basket with coffees, teas, snacks, etc.

The kids were uncontrollably excited & couldn't decide what to do first: Wii in the cinema, swimming pool, trampoline, or kayaking on the lake (which is fenced, by the way, to protect smaller children). We encouraged them to be outside in the gorgeous weather, but the cinema was great in the evenings with many DVDs. The little ones loved the playroom & made good use of the games, toys and costumes. Lots of little princess photos!

The property is very well-maintained & clean. The rooms were much larger than they appear in the photos & we loved the space. All of the public rooms open into each other, so we always felt 'together'. The bed linen was beautiful & the mattresses were comfortable. Everyone loved having their own bathrooms! The kitchen was our favorite space (2 sinks & 2 cooking zones meant that we could all get creative) & we also had 3 dining options outside with the BBQs: the lake, the rear sunset garden & the pool.

The area was incredible. Laval, about 15 min away, is a beautiful city with loads to do and great shopping. The village of Meslay next to the chateau had a large supermarket, bakeries, bars, & a great market. Medieval St. Suzanne and the Roman town of Jublains are both very close. The kids loved the wacky Robert Tatin Museum & the zoo. 5 min from the castle was 'The Bois', a wooded park with zip-lines, pony rides, boating, etc. We also saw Mont St. Michel, Normandy beaches & some Loire castles. My parents popped into Paris for the day as it's not far by train.

Looking at all of the amazing photos that we took, we are already planning our next visit & dreaming of 'our' castle in France.
