Onancock Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Beachfront Cottage Sleeps 2-3

Imagine driving down a long dead end road and discovering a small colony of just 8 cottages nestled along the Chesapeake Bay. Welcome to Crystal Beach Cottage in Crystal Beach Colony where daily life is calm, peaceful and untroubled.

For the sportsman, our cottage is situated on the Chesapeake Bay with decent fishing directly accessible from the bank or nearby boat launch. Waterfowl hunting in the highly productive Barrier Island Chain is only a few miles away or you can hunt directly offshore here on Bayside!

After sundown from the back deck, you can see the twinkling lights of historic Tangier Island. By day when the sky is clear, a distant image of the little island town is also visible. Tangier was a strategic British base of operations during the war of 1812, and it is approximately 13 miles distant in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. Boat tours are available for visiting the wonderful and unique island. This makes for a great day of sightseeing, shopping and dining on local cuisine, along with a fantastic boat ride to and from the destination.

Wallops Island is a well known NASA location for rocket launches into outer space. It has become a significant facility which deploys many rockets throughout a typical year, including the launch to supply the International Space Station. From the back porch of 'Seven Mile House', these spectacular events are visible in the night sky. On a clear evening, one can actually see the rocket profile and separation of the various rocket stages during early, rapid acceleration. The light show from the blast and burning fuel is spectacular! Plan your vacation when a launch is scheduled from Wallops Island for an unforgettable event in your Chesapeake vacation! Information regarding upcoming rocket launch dates is available from the NASA website at

About Patty Phillipy

Hi, we are government retirees from Pennsylvania who enjoy spending time on the Eastern Shore of VA, traveling to national parks and other scenic lands and spending time with our children and our grandson.

Patty Phillipy purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Patty Phillipy chose Eastern Shore Virginia

We looked long and hard for a vacation home that was off the beaten path yet near a nice little town, was on the water and had a mesmerizing view. This property has all of that and more!

Not a good experience

When we got to the cottage, within the first hour, we killed over 3 dozen flies in the cottage. The cleaning lady came in to return the vacuum cleaner and saw one of our piles of flies. She stated that a wedding party had been staying there the previous 9 days. She gave us a fly strip but she was only there a few minutes. The only correspondence I had with the owner was an email as there was no phone number listed anywhere on the emails. We decided to leave the facility and stay somewhere else as we weren't comfortable staying there. We thought we had gotten all of the flies but they seemed to still be coming in from somewhere. I sent two emails over the weekend and never heard back from the owner until I called VRBO who then gave me the owner's phone number on our way home from our vacation. The owner never called back but responded via an email stating that she had no proof that we didn't stay and if I would have contacted her, she would have put us up somewhere else at no additional cost. I had requested at least a partial reimbursement since I had to pay to stay somewhere else. She never responded back. I would not recommend this rental.

Owner's Response: Feedback Response It's very disheartening to receive a review like this after almost 4 glorious years of happy guests. I am sorry that one was unhappy and that I was unaware of the fact that they were unhappy because I certainly would have gone out of my way to set them up elsewhere immediately into an equal or better accommodation. This dissatisfied guest never once tried to contact me. I learned about this situation 4 DAYS LATER (their reservation was for 3 nights) when they called me to say that they stayed at another place. I checked with VRBO/HomeAway right away and they were not contacted either. Later, after they returned from my place and/or the other place, they contacted VRBO/HomeAway and filed a complaint against me. Both sides were reviewed by a dispute specialist and and it was determined that no refund was necessary and my account remained in good standing with them. I must say that I am a little disappointed that they will allow negative feedback to be posted after going through the complaint process but life isn't very fair sometimes, is it!? I will say that the cottage is lovely and it is not infested with flies. I spoke with our housekeeper and she said that she had been in the cottage for two hours cleaning just minutes before these guests arrived and she didn't notice any flies. We do keep fly strips on hand for outdoor use and she gave one to them. As she stood there and spoke with the guests, there was no fly activity. The event was so insignificant to her that she did not even mention it to me in her cleaning report. I am all about customer service and I go out of my way to make my guests happy and comfortable. I have many repeat guests over the years who return to the cottage and they are very happy. I'm sad that I had one who wasn't :( Sincerely, Patty Phillipy Owner and Operator

Our second stay at this lovely cottage did not disappoint. Innkeepers, Bill and Patty Phillipy's, attention to detail makes this quaint bungalow a comfortable and welcoming respite. The location is private and secluded. Perfect for a quiet getaway. We look forward to our next opportunity to return!

A wonderful romantic get away, nicely remote in winter, paddle paradise, very helpful owners.

  • 5 of 5

Our little get away was awesome! Sketchy cell service forced an "off the grid" week. Strong WiFi allowed connections when desired. Great pub, Blarney Stone, awesome locals, and New Year's at Island House in Wachapreague. Cold rainy weather forced us to chill and read a good book. When the weather broke, fire in the fire pit and smores. Super Walmart 20 minutes away has anything you need, forgot, or broke and want to replace. Owners very responsive and helpful, in all things, logistics, late checkout, and where to reset circuit breaker after blowing a fuse. Wonderful time and want to come back when weather is nice and we can do some paddling. The area looks to be a paddler's paradise.

Paddle Paradise

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I brought kayaks, parked them on the beach and spent two days exploring the area. We paddled in both directions from the launch point, we drove to Chincoteague--a very pleasant one hour trip--and came home to another beautiful sunset paddle! It was such a treat to be able to fix our own meals when we liked and then hop into boats and just take off at any time. Patty and Bill were friendly and helpful. The Corner Bakery in Onancock has donuts and pastries that are not to be missed! And they're cheap! I would definitely recommend this adorable cottage for paddlers and plan to return in the fall.

Amazingly Beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

Patty & Bill, thank you so much for your great hospitality. You guys are just wonderful. The cottage, location and views are amazing. We enjoyed the peace and quiet, and wished we could have stayed longer. Archie had a wonderful time at the beach looking for seas shells. I would recommend this place to anyone. It's such a hidden treasure, away from it all, yet close enough to town. I wish I could give 10 Stars!!!! Thank you again for opening your home. Hope to come back soon. Bianca, TKL and Archie!!

Perfect Cottage on the beach!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage deserves all of the positive reviews it has received! Cute, cozy and facing right onto the beach. Our last night there featured a gorgeous sunset, a full moon and a blazing fire pit. All to ourselves! The beds are comfortable, the cottage is cute, cozy and clean, and the owners couldn't be nicer. We didn't want to leave!
