'Up in the Trees” is all main floor living with hardwood and tile flooring throughout - comfortable for a couple, for a family, maybe two, even for a single person who likes space! Sleeps six in three bedrooms. When the leaves are gone there is a beautiful mountain view even though you are in town and convenient to everything this quaint and stunning mountain surrounded town of Black Mountain has to offer. When the leaves are in, you are amid nature's magnificence and “up in the trees”, so any season of the year this place is a total treat, inside and out.
Entering the home, you will find yourself inside a windowed porch complete with four rocking chairs looking out through the trees. Have a seat, delve into our basket of art supplies, so if something inspires you then let the creative spirit out! In Spring and Summer enjoy the night sounds of a distant passing train, cicadas, and tree frogs. In Fall, changing leaf colors can swallow you up and sooth your soul. Bird feeders are strategically placed in mid fall and into the winter, and hummingbird feeders are up from Spring to September, so bird watchers enjoy. The night sounds from the porch, deck or rear yard are truly musical! From the front porch, you may go out onto our south facing deck complete with a deep seat deck swing and a table for four with chairs that rock.
The front porch is also your entry into the living room - best described as simple luxury, from the down sofa to the eclectic collection of books on the shelves, attractive art on the walls, to the wood burning fireplace. A comfortable place with seatting for up to eight to gather and converse. Our wood burning fireplace has a blower, so if you like it can heat the whole house in the winter. Firewood and starter is provided of course. It’s a great place for a board game; you will find Scrabble, Chess, Checkers, Backgammon, Scattergories, and more.
Left from the living room is one of the most uplifting dining rooms you will ever enjoy. The table is pub style seating which can expand to accommodate six very comfortably. A skylight makes it bright and cheerful all day. It connects to a well equipped granite top kitchen complete with coffee maker, microwave, dishwasher, and stove top/oven. You will also have available to you a hand mixer, cappuccino/espresso maker, juicer, and generally a set up to please those who have a chef's heart and skill - even a professional style butcher block table. If your idea of vacation tends toward dining out, no worries. Black Mountain has many great restaurant options. For even more options, downtown Asheville is just 20 minutes away!
At the end of the kitchen, you are welcome to use the washer and dryer complete with folding and ironing station. If doing laundry is not your idea of a vacation, there is no obligation to do anything you do not want to do here! The kitchen connects to the den where you will find a 37' high definition flat screen TV, leather sofa, a comfy chair, and a mission style upholstered oak chair. Extra chairs can be added. There is wireless internet and an extra HDMI cable if you like to see anything from your computer up on a large screen. You will find streaming options through a remote controlled Roku 3. Enjoy our subscriptions to Netflix, HuluPlus and Pandora and explore the many free channels on Roku. The den connects you to a totally private flat yard, fully fenced for your dog. If you like to grill, try the three burner stainless steel gas grill and serve your family on the patio table for six. Or celebrate with your kids by cooking hot dogs and s’mores over the fire pit.
We encourage you to park in the two car garage. From there it is a flat walk into the den. There is a motion detector light outside for your safety and comfort. Notice the kid’s fort built into the hill just behind the fence; it is only to be observed and not used at this time..
Now, back to the warm and inviting living room… as you leave the living room and enter 'serenity hall,' the north side of the house, you will find some of our favorite photos of birds plus one butterfly. To the right you will find the front bedroom, which is 'the green room,' so soothing to be in, with a basil lime reed diffuser, and similarly scented soy candle, mission style Kincaid oak furniture, beautiful framed prints, table lamps, and a queen sized bed topped with gel fiber luxury topper w/ 100% cotton sheets and cotton down comforter/duvet. In the closet is an extra blanket and pillow, a basket to hold your laundry and a carrier to hold your bathroom items. The other two bedrooms are similarly equipped. Whoever stays in this room will have access to either the hall bathroom or the master bedroom bath. Across the hall from the 'green room' is the 'blue room' which also has a queen sized bed with 100% cotton sheets and a cotton down comforter/duvet, a luxurious gel/fiber topper, nicely furnished plus a reed diffuser with violet scent and same scented soy candles. This bedroom has a few pleasant surprises to be discovered and has an attached bathroom with retro white and black tiling, separate toilet room and a restored 1910 cast iron clawfoot tub which may be used for a relaxing bath or as a fixed shower, your choice. Down the hall and also accessible to the dining room is the 'Kid's room,' which is suitable for a boy or a girl, and since there is a desk in here, it could also make a nice 'office' room. This bedroom could also be suitable for a single adult. The scent found here is gardenia. The daybed is a twin. A trundle can be pulled out and set up if two twins are needed. Soft and cozy bedding is also used here.
For those who may have allergy issues, rest assured that we use all eco friendly cleaning supplies. We also have a quiet running HEPA and carbon air purifier which you are welcome to use as much as you wish and may be easily moved to different rooms of the house.
If you have stayed at the Grove Park Inn you may recognize some of the furniture and accessories. We were fortunate that the Grove Park Inn was replacing some of their classic furniture while we were furnishing “Up in the Trees” and we were able to acquire a number of pieces. Just for fun we are offering a free three day stay next year around the same time as your current visit for the guests who correctly identify the largest number of Grove Park Inn items. Make a list and mail it to us by the end of December. One entry per stay, the entry that has the most correct and fewest incorrect items will win. Ties will be decided by a random draw. Have fun. And we hope to see you back next year.
As you consider “Up in the Trees”, feel free to drop us a note with any questions. And if you decide to take a spontaneous getaway trip, call us to ask about our last minute bookings discounts.
A desire to be of service to people has been a leading companion for a good deal of my life. One of my passions stems from a recognition of the value of living spaces and how these spaces can be revitalizing to the people who inhabit them. I believe that to live life fully taking time for refueling is essential. From this recognition sprung a desire to create a living space as a springboard for that fulfilling life we all desire. On a more personal note, I enjoy walking with my husband and our two dogs, hiking, gardening, food processing, making pottery on a wheel, making jewelry, reading, meditating, making naturally scented soy candles, and generally supporting others in living their best lives.
Vicky Olive purchased this house in 2013
Having attended Brevard College, just an hour southwest of Black Mountain, I became acquainted with Black Mountain and have since fallen in love with this place and the friendly genuine people who live here. I have returned to Black Mountain almost every year since. Don, my husband, and I have volunteered for Spring and Fall LEAF Festivals most of the past ten years, setting up the Kids Village there for the past three years. So, when we came across this house “in the trees” with its fabulous front porch, right in town, on a quiet no through street with a totally private flat backyard, great layout plus a two car garage, we sensed the potential of this place to be revitalizing for us and our guests. We set to work in mid July to transform it into the most nurturing and hospitable vacation home it is today. We strived to create simple luxury and rich comfort seen with the addition of the claw foot tub and some of the Grove Park Inn furniture and accessories. We are excited to hear the feedback from our guests over the coming months.

My friends and I recently enjoyed a few days at the Up in the Trees home. The house is cozy, beautiful, and kept very clean! It was also very well stocked-- towels and washcloths were provided, and the kitchen was stocked with dishes, spices, etc. The owner remained in contact throughout the booking process, answering any questions we had. The location is also perfect if you are looking to spend time in Asheville and Black Mountain. We had a lovely time "Up in the Trees."
This was a great place for our family getaway! The house had everything we needed. Comfortable beds, relaxing atmosphere, clean, inviting. We prepared some meals at the home, as well as eating in Black Mountain and Asheville. Every morning we drove a few minutes to Montreat and hiked. We used the wood burning fireplace a couple of times. We did not turn on the TV so can't speak to that. Wifi worked well. We would love to stay here again! And thank you Vicky for the peppermint bark!
We enjoyed a week visit at the Up in the Trees Vacation rental. Having 3 bedrooms for four adults and two children was terrific. The owner has added many special touches to add to the experience - even robes for guests. The galley kitchen with the laundry definitely suited our visit. The dining area has a high top table and chairs that was fun for us and the grandkids. Plus the skylight kept it from feeling closed in. The bedrooms each had special touches to add to the ambiance of being in a home and not just a rental. The grandkids loved bathing in the claw foot tub - since it was different. It was also nice to have a living room and a den with a TV. We did have a few challenges with the TV since it is only ROKU (which we were no familiar with it since we are use to cable) but managed to adapt to it. The enclosed porch was nice for just sitting and relaxing before or after dinner. The grandkids were excited to have the treehouse to climb and check out in the backyard. However, we stayed very busy on this visit so they had limited time to play in the treehouse. The house is located on a cul de sac in a neighborhood. While the houses are close together, the layout and the trees (hence Up in the Trees name) give the impression of being away from it all. The driveway into the garage is steep and a bit tricky backing out initially. The owner is very welcoming and quick to address and items. It was a fun visit and we liked the convenient location.
We had a wonderful stay in Black Mountain. The house was much better than we had even expected. We loved all of the separate living spaces so we could each retreat with our books when we wanted to. The bedding was luxurious. The house had everything that we needed and more. It was quiet and cozy and very clean. The town of Black Mountain was very quaint. We would most definitely stay here again!
The owner is very welcoming and quick to respond to inquiries. Checking in was easy. The home is a simple, but nice 3BR close to downtown Black Mountain. The backyard is small, but has a nice grill and backs up to woods. No views, but located near the end of a street so it was quiet. Beds were comfortable, and the house was clean. Overall a nice stay and affordable for those needing 3br in a convenient location.
My family and I had a great time staying at Up in the Trees! It's a very nice house – the owners obviously care a lot about the place and wanted us to have a fantastic experience. Loved that they keep some spices and condiments stocked, and it may seem silly, but I appreciated little things like name-brand paper towels – shows they're not skimping on details just to make an extra buck. The location is super convenient within Black Mountain (my daughter appreciated how close the public pool was), which is a wonderful little town, and has easy access to the whole Asheville area. Hope we can do it again next year!
Black Mountain is right off I 40, and while an attraction in its own right, it is very convenient to Montreat, Swannanoa, Asheville, Weaverville, Hendersonville, and Bat Cave. John Campbell Folk Art Center and Blue Ridge Pkwy. Of course, Pisgah National Forest, Sliding Rock, Waynesville, Brevard, and so many other special spots are beautiful, scenic less than an hour away options as well. Right here in Black Mountain is one of the country's best music/ dance/ arts festivals every Fall and Spring, set at gorgeous Camp Rockmont, the Lake Eden Arts Festival, AKA LEAF. In July, the Sourwood Festival also takes place right in town. We have materials/ brochures at the house as well as a book to introduce you to many of Asheville's independently owned restaurants, their chefs and some recipes from each. There really is not time to relay all the types of places and activities that are within reach of this beautiful quaint Black Mountain town, whether you are an musician, artist, photographer, healing arts practitioner, outdoorsman- hiker, fisherman, rock climber, backpacker, shopper, foodie, golfer or enthusiast of a variety of activities, you will fall in love this area. The beauty of the natural areas will take your breath away and the culture within the Appalachia is so very rich. Loyal return visitors know this. Those of you who have not visited owe it to yourselves to get to know this special area of the world. It can change you for the better.
