This stone cottage, built in 1793, is situated in a hamlet and is 5 minutes walk from the village of Teyssieu. Deep in the country, and ideal if you enjoy walking, bird life and superb scenery. At the end of the day, enjoy the sun set from the terrace, with a view of 15-20 miles, or try several very good restaurants within easy reach if you've still got the energy!
We are close to two of France's 'Grande Rondonnee' marked walks through the countryside, much of which is virgin woodland. You can hire mountain bikes in nearby Bretenoux. We are also close to Rocamadour, France's second foremost pilgimage site. You can swim or canoe in the Dordogne river nearby, or visit a large number of caves, several with prehistoric paintings. There are a lot of chateaux, mostly open to the public, particularly along the Dordogne valley which saw much of the action of the 100 years' war.

Peacefull and authentic
This beautifully simple cottage was everything we had hoped for when booking. The location is wonderfully quiet and surrounded by stunning scenery yet within an enjoyable walk of the pretty local village. The cottage itself is authentically rustic, absolutely oozing charm and extremely well equipped. The owner, who was brilliantly helpful in the booking process, really has thought of everything. There are lots of places to eat within a reasonable distance and lots to see and explore in that area, even if the weather was, for the most part, so hot that we spent most days on the terrace with a book and a glass of chilled white wine. I would certainly recommend. Fantastic.
Many thanks for your review, Stewart. It's good to know that I'm getting it right. We spent a little time on the museum area downstairs this year which I think has helped the rustic quotient!
Get away from it all and enjoy the countryside.
A beautiful and well appointed cottage, quite remote (that's good) in countryside with exceptional scenery. This provided and an excellent base to explore some interesting castles, caves and a few museums in nearby towns. Excellent ares to visit in August when many villages have fetes, vide greniers etc.
I'm very glad that you liked the cottage. August is indeed a good time to be in the region. with many activities and sights to enjoy. However small the village, they all have fetes, usually finishing with a spectacular firework display.
favourite holiday destination
This has been our fourth stay at this delightful cottage since 1998. We have tried many others in France and other countries but always want to go back to this one.
The house is beautiful in its simplicity and authenticity but has everything one needs for a very comfortable holiday. It is clean and well looked after. The kitchen is very well equipped so it is possible to cook wonderful dishes from the food bought at local markets. Alternatively, there is the village restaurant 10 minutes walk away where they do amazing food at bargain prices. We love
reading in the shade of the waltnut trees in the garden and going for walks in the surrounding area. This August the meadows were full of colourful wild flowers and there were many different varieties of butterflies. If one can tear oneself away from the peace and tranquility of Teyssieu there are many
historic towns and villages to be explored, and also quite a few natural beauty spots. Another good reason for going to this corner of the Lot area is that tourist numbers are relatively low in most places.
2014 is the 40th anniversary of my buying the cottage. My aim has always been to provide somewhere that guests will enjoy staying in, even in the early days when it was more like indoor camping. During their various visits Johanna and John have always expressed their appreciation, and it is feedback like this that makes the process of letting somewhere that is very close to my heart a great pleasure, even a privilege. They will always be very welcome to stay again.
The ideal place to unwind...
"You don't own it, so why do you keep coming back?" a newly arrived Brit barn-owner asked me some years ago. I explained that I, and all the friends I've brought here over the years, have found it an ideal place for unwinding and rebuilding our energy levels. A rare glimpse of truly rural France, the cottage exudes serenity and has everything you need for a great get-away-from-it-all holiday, plus fabulous scenery. There are many places and attractions to visit in the area, and excellent restaurants. But the best recommendation I can give is that next month will be my 23rd holiday at this cottage.
Teyssieu is at around 1,700 feet, with good views to the lower areas to the west and north-west. It is within easy reach of the famous site of Rocamadour, and the Dordogne River is close by. Both Cahors to the south and the popular parts of the Dordogne valley to the west are within easy reach for day trips.
