The Cottage, on the National Registry of Historic Places and a Virginia Landmark, was build in Free Union before 1760. Located 10 miles west of the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport and 12 miles from Emmet Street (Route 29) and Barracks Road. It is surrounded by the Blue Ridge mountain making for a private and beautiful setting.
This is a beautiful historic cottage - great for a secluded retreat!
Elizabeth (the owner) is very friendly and hospitable, and will walk you through the history of the house if you ask! It was built in 1760, and the living room is part of the original 1 room house. The rustic 2 bedrooms upstairs are part of an original add-on in the 1800s. It's clear that much of the original house and style was lovingly preserved.
There are three working fireplaces (one in the master bedroom, one in the living room, and one in the kitchen). It faces a little pond (stocked with fish) with a beautiful view of the mountains. Though the house is historic, the kitchenette, washer/dryer, heating/cooling, and one and a half bathrooms are all modern. The house was also extremely clean.
It is definitely a place to get away from it all - we had limited/no cell service within the house (though we could get some service within a mile nearby), and there is no TV or wifi. It's a great place to sit by the fire and night and take a run through the country in the morning. We stayed with two other couples and an infant and loved it. Since it's a small house, if you have people going to bed at different times you may want to bring a fan or play white noise to help buffer sound. We used that for the infant and it worked really well.
We loved our stay and would definitely recommend it!
