Kauai is so lush and green it’s known as The Garden Island.
And what a garden! Waterfalls plunge into pools lined with exotic flowers, rare birds call out their unique songs, and waves peel off in long sonorous lines that whisper and fade on unspoiled beaches.
It is a garden tailor-made for exploration. Check out the Wailua River where, during certain times of the year and specific tides, you can view ancient stone carvings. Or, hike the Na Pali Coast—a 14-mile stretch of uninhabited shoreline where 2,700-foot cliffs plummet to clear coral waters, and hidden valleys open on empty white-sand beaches.
January – March has a milder climate and is prime season for whale watching.
The museum houses a permanent collection of Hawaiian artifacts, including more than 5,000 historical photographs, more than 1,000 stone implements and tools and an art collection. Open: 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Mon.-Fri.; 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Sat.; closed Sun. 8 mi.
Experience the mystic beauty of the Fern Grotto. Enjoy the journey along the historic Wailua River by tour boat or kayak. Once you reach the grotto, Hawaiian musicians will serenade you with traditional songs.
