About Simmy

Kanaka Maoli, Born in the Territory of Hawai'i.

Owner of " Pacific Vibrations Surf Shop" in Kailua Kona, Since 1978, the First Surf Shop in Kona, located 5 miles from the house. Across from the Kailua Kona Pier, and the Hulihe'e Palace. Official directors for the Ironman Triathlon World Championship since 1982. We are in charge of the Swim Portion. Every year we have over 100 Surfers lining the Ironman course in the ocean, making sure everyone is Safe.

We carry top of the line Surfboards, GoPro Cameras, Surfwear, and much more. We are built solid on word of mouth for our reputation.

The smallest, oldest Surf Shop in the World. Not only a place to shop, but, old timers, friends and customers often stop by to get their fix, of "Aloha"

Why Simmy chose Keauhou

Location!! We Love Kahalu'u Beach. This is where our kids grew up, they played here 5 days a week. Friends gathered at this beach 5 days a week in the 1970's. It was their playground, and they learned to swim and surf here. There is so much life to this beach, fishes galore, octopus, turtles, monk seals and more.

We are into the Old Style Hawaiian living of simple, Single family dwelling homes, and Open Space. Not so much as concrete apartments, condo's, more into Nature. We are fortunate to be surrounded by 42 acres of trees. The back yard is full of birds, and the front is the Bright Blue Ocean with Coconut Palm Trees. Gives us peace of mind, and a connection to mother nature.

King Kamehameha loved this beach chosen because of the Surf, the Ocean, and the Agricultural.

We are so Blessed to call this our Hale (Home). We love sharing our Hale with visitors so they can experience what it feesl like to be connected with all the Cultural Natural Resources.

We hope they enjoy our Special place on earth and have an everlasting Happy memorable time.

What makes this house unique

We loved it so much we purchased two homes side by side for our Ohana. There is no other place in the world like this. Being in touch with the Ocean and all the Hawaiian Cultural and Natural Resources is a Blessing!

Once a place for the Hawaiian Chiefs, it was so special it is now the National and State Historic Kahalu'u District.

So happy there is a movement to" Protect" our area, Kamehameha School, Bishop Estate l is now Demolishing the Keauhou Beach Hotel next to Kahalu'u Beach. They have now named it Kahalu'u" Maka"i, my home is located" Mauka" . They plan to use it as an educational center for the Keiki and Kupuna (young and old)." Restore" our Hawaiian Cultural , Not Destroy. Educate to protect our Cultural Resources.

Respect and Strive to protect Kahalu'u District for the Now and Future Generation.

Relax on a lovely lanai, listen to the waves, watch the sunset through the palms-Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

This wonderful home was perfect for our mixed group of 5 family members and it was located about 4 minutes walking from one of the best and most convenient snorkeling beaches on the island. Kahaluu Beach Park was the reason we chose this area and we went snorkeling at least twice a day...usually rewarding ourselves for a nice workout with a Mango Shave Ice at the food truck! The house was EXACTLY as described in the literature and the pictures are perfect representations of the house and property. Simmy, the owner, was so nice and very informative. Location is great-Kailua-Kona with shopping and dining options is just down the road, there is a shopping center a three minute drive away with shops, eateries, movie theater, farmers market on Saturdays, and a grocery store. Remember to take your shopping bags as you will pay for them in many stores. Sam Choy's Kai Lanai is above the shopping center and we ate multiple meals there during our two weeks and enjoyed them all (the sunset is fabulous from the Lanai!) Speaking of Lanais...the one at the house was huge and we used the lounges A LOT and ate all our home meals at the dining table set up outside. The house is set back from the road, Alii Drive, a main thoroughfare, but don't let that worry you...the speed limits in Hawaii make mainlanders feel like they are driving backwards and you won't hear horns unless you are an instant from actually being hit...seriously...horns are just not "done" in Hawaii...so the road is not intrusive on the peace of the property. There are rental houses on both sides, but we still felt we had all the privacy we needed. (Vacant land behind the house) There is also a fresh water wading pool on the property which really helped alleviate some of the heat and humidity, especially dipping your toes in with a frosty beverage in hand. We stocked up on some Costco items, which is on the way from the airport, and then hit the farmers market the next morning for fresh produce and fish since it was Saturday. The owners have another lovely house next door that we got to see and as far as I can tell is just as marvelous as our rental. As the day wanes, so does the traffic, and you can hear the waves clearly from the lanai, the birds in the morning are lovely, and the scents of the island flowers are all free in the rental cost. We could not have asked for a better appointed property and it is definitely on our list for next time!

とても居心地が良かった

  • 5 of 5

A special place

  • 5 of 5

Hale O Makai was a perfect house for our three-generation family of six. Its location close to Kahalu'u beach was a significant factor in our choosing this house. It was so easy to walk there for early morning snorkeling or for grandkids to play in the waves. The five- and seven-year-olds also delighted in the wading pool. Moreover, grocery/drug store/movie theatre/etc. are truly a five-minute drive away.

The house itself worked well for us -- comfortable sleeping, well-equipped kitchen with enough counter space to prepare family meals. The highlight is the spacious lanai -- for dining, reading, playing games -- all with a fantastic ocean view. One morning as I ate breakfast, I saw spouts from three whales!

One of my favorite memories from our stay is the night sky -- seeing Orion in the evening looking mauka from the back of the house and then again over the ocean in the pre-dawn.

Mahalo, Simmy, for offering a special place to enjoy Hawaii.

Beautiful house, great host, great location

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 adults had a wonderful stay at this house, which would easily accommodate 8-10 people. It was nice to meet Simmy at check-in! Excellent communication from owner both before and during our stay, well-kept & clean house, everything supplied except food (a few staples, like sugar, were in kitchen), lots of nice towels. We were grateful to have the option to use air conditioners but did not need them the majority of the time (July). Having a washer/dryer onsite was a major plus, allowing us to pack lighter than we otherwise could have. Didn't use the TV, but noticed a selection of video tapes and DVDs in the house, and appreciated access to the house wi-fi (turned on with the power strip in the media cabinet).

Easy 4-block walk to Kahalu'u, a lifeguarded beach that's good for novice snorkelers -- no sidewalks, but lots of people walk along the roadside here. (Good experience renting gear from Snorkel Bob's in Kona.) There's also public access to a lava rock beach right across the street (no lifeguard, but nice views.) Lovely ocean views from the expansive lanai. Lots of nifty lizards & birds to keep you company outdoors!

10-minute drive to nice grocery store (KTA), in shopping area that includes post office, good Thai food (Royal Thai) and shave ice, and excellent pizza (Bianelli's)! Easy access to downtown Kona, but house is far enough down Ali'i Drive that it's away from the tourist area and is peaceful. Under 20 minutes to Target, 30 to airport. (Add 10-15 minutes when traffic is heavy.)

From this location you'll need to drive into Kona. I'd recommend parking at the Marriott Kona Beach Hotel lot (just to the right of the hotel's main entrance) -- it's open to the public, and at $6 per hour it's cheaper than other parking in the area (the free public lots fill quickly), and is close enough to downtown's many restaurants and shops that it is a good base for getting oriented in town. We parked there several times, and there was always space, even when there seemed to be a lot of cars on the road.

House was also a good base for longer drives, about 90 winding minutes south to black sand beach where sea turtles feed. Volcanoes National Park is a solid 2 hours from here, maybe a bit more. For our family, it worked better to stay several days in a house closer to the National Park, especially so we could visit at night to see the crater glowing.

Simmy and her house were a great fit for our family! Would recommend them to anyone!

Simmy's wonderful home could not have been better. The home is perfect and in a perfect location. Our three teenagers enjoyed the short walk to the beach where they were able to enjoy the snorkeling and surfing. The furnishings and amenities were perfect for our family! It was the greatest place to relax and enjoy our time on the Big Island. We will certainly be back. Thank you Simmy for making our stay wonderful!

National Register of Historic District Kahalu'u Beach!! The Best Snorkel Beach in Hawaii. It was King Kamehameha's favorite for Surfing, and he loved coconuts. So much that he had a caretaker guarding the trees. The most important, Surfing Heiau "Kuemanu" dedicated to the ancient Hawaiian Sport of Surfing, is only steps away from my home. It was where the Hawaiians prayed to the God to bring waves to the Bay. Kahalu'u has ancient ponds, and a menehune breakwater built by the Chief, Kalai'kini, that encloses part of the bay. Kahalu'u is one of the most popular beach on the entire Island of Hawaii. You will see an abundance of Reef fishes in this protected Bay. Many turtles will frequent this area. Surfing the Bay is popular and many Surf schools to teach beginners and teach people to respect our ocean as well as being safe. There are two lifeguard stands, pavillions, picnic tables, bathrooms, showers, and lunch wagon with shave ice. The weather is almost always Sunny all year round. The Big Island is the largest of all, so the weather varies around the entire Island. Kahalu'u is one of the Best! You can sometimes see Dolphins right in front of my home! Also, you will love the Sunsets above the ocean on the huge lanai.
