Why J Farmer chose Hot Springs
Red Canyon is South Dakota's most historic canyon. It is the pathway used by pre-native Americans, native Americans and the first stage coach service into the Black Hills from Cheyenne to Deadwood.

We LOVED this cabin and its views and serenity! It is a very well made log cabin ( have stayed in several in the Black Hills) and this was our favorite. Our sons surprised us by being able to join us at the cabin, making our family reunion/ Christmas spectacular. We even got to cut our own Dr. Suess-looking Christmas tree from nearby woods and put up on the front porch. We had several beautiful snow days and enjoyed walking the hills and 4 wheeling in the area. Loved the fireplace and the beds were comfortable and cozy. We would love to return in the summertime where we could enjoy the porch and outdoors more.
We couldn't have been more pleased with our stay. The cabin is absolutely beautiful and the view from the deck will leave you speechless! We had breakfast out there every day with the birds and the sunshine. The drive up the dirt roads was always a surprise...never sure what you will see as far as animals go...elk, bison, cows, deer, birds, bunnies, butterflies...very good chance of any of them. I do recommend a car with good suspension!! The cabin was so comfortable and so quiet, we had no trouble sleeping or relaxing. We even had a short rain, followed by a double rainbow while we were there...watched it all from the wonderful deck. The games and pool table were great ways to fill our evening hours. The check-in process is a breeze and it was great to work with James and the owner...both helpful and thoughtful! The cabin is close enough to plenty of towns (Custer and Hill City were our favorites) and to lots of great attractions and hiking trails. It was our first vacation we were truly sorry to see end.
Beautiful cabin and views!!
This property far exceeded our expectations. The cabin is absolutely beautiful and the views are stunning. It was the perfect place to relax and have quality family time. We had done a lot of sightseeing and stayed at a few hotels prior to arriving at the cabin. Once we arrived, my family had no desire to leave. We loved spending time out on the deck, hiking around the property and playing pool/games at night.
As for amenities, this cabin has everything that you would possibly need.
If you are looking for a remote and peaceful place to relax, this is it. We will definitely be recommending this cabin to our friends and family and hope to be back again in the near future.
Amber, thanks for the thoughtful and detailed comments regarding your stay at the White Buffalo cabin on the rim of historic Red Canyon. Hope to see you again some time. On your second stay, we offer a 10% discount. JWF
This property exceeded our expectations in every way. Our family stayed here for a week and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The property manager, Jim Farmer, is very welcoming and accommodating. He is professional in every way and the service he provided us was superb. My favorite aspect of this cabin is the scenic deck area overlooking the canyon. It has a feel to it that you can only experience in person, so relaxing and serene. I spent early mornings outside with coffee, watching and listening to the wilderness and planning the day. Evenings were spent on the deck with family, cooking on the BBQ grill and telling stories. What a remarkable time we had here! We explored all the local hiking trails and went for miles and miles. There are buffalo on the ranch just outside the cabin property. We got more up close and personal with them every day here then we did in Custer Park.
Yes it’s a long drive from Custer, about 45 minutes, and lots of dirt roads. But this location and cabin were worth it. Due to the drive, we alternated the days between excursions to Black Hills sites and staying all day at the cabin. It worked out very well this way. If you want to slow down and stay in a private, calm, beautiful cabin with every amenity you need, this is the place. The cabin is well stocked and thoughtfully appointed with every detail. My family loved it. A heart felt thank you!
Scenery & cabin beyond our expectations
We had a wonderful experience at the White Buffalo Cabin. It was more than just a place to stay while on vacation. We thoroughly enjoyed the pool table and other games available to us along with the amazing views that we just could not get over along with everything we needed to enjoy our stay. We would recommend this place to everyone and will definately be coming back in the future. Just be sure you realize that it is about 45 minutes from the nearest town. We very much appreciate the opportunity to be able to stay at such a beautiful place and look forward to coming back soon!
Stunning cabin in a picturesque setting. The cabin is located about 30 minutes off the main road and is surrounded by a fantastic view. It is stylishly furnished and the kitchen is well stocked with dinnerware, pots, pans and utensils. The lower level of the cabin is perfect for a relaxing night of playing games, pool, foosball or darts. Our family of four enjoyed all the cabin had to offer and would highly recommended it if you are looking for a place to relax in comfort and enjoy the beauty that surrounds it!
ANN and family were great guests! It was treat to host them and hope they return. JWF
