3 bedroom / 2 bathroom historic shingle house with antiques. Built in 1928 above scenic Silverado Trail, the historic home offers privacy above Napa River in oak woodlands. 0.9 mile walk/bike down a vinyard-lined road to historic St. Helena, 'Napa Valley's Main Street.'

We named the house 'Preservation House' because our focus has been to restore rather than modernize or remodel, both inside and out. Except for upgrades important for safety, like electrical service, kitchen ventilation, and fire protection, keeping the house's historic and authentic features is our goal. The house is 1,400 square feet and centers around an open livingroom-diningroom space with historic knotty pine walls and ceilings, in the tradition of a 1928 lodge. A large hearth with a woodburning stove adds to the cozy, intimate feeling of the livingroom, and both rooms are furnished with a mix of comfortable contemporary seating and period antiques and artwork. The woodburning stove is NOT operable because of fire restrictions in Napa Valley. The kitchen has a large refrigerator and historic gas stove that works beautifully (no microwave). A covered porch off the kitchen is a great place to enjoy your morning coffee and as a place to unwind in the evening. In the vernacular Italian building tradition, the house's downstairs bathroom is accessible through the covered outdoor porch rather than through an interior entrance. According to a historian of vernacular architecture, Arne Alanen, Prof. Emeritus, U. of Wisc., many Italians thought it was unsanitary for a bathroom to open into the first story kitchen and living spaces directly. Both the finished upstairs bathroom and utilitarian downstairs bathroom have a shower and the upstairs bathroom also has a tub. As throughout the house, the bathrooms feature authentic historic elements rather than remodelled features.

The house has three bedrooms with large operable windows, some with screens. There are box fans in each bedroom but no air conditioning. One bedroom has a king-sized, another has a queen-size, and the third bedroom has two twin-size beds. Upstairs there are softwood floors and an exterior entrance from the upstairs landing to the oak woodlands behind the house. Although we try to abate poison oak on the property, it is a native plant. Please be cautious of poison oak on the property.

The house has character and is uniquely of its time and place, a true Napa Valley vernacular house. Built in 1928, we are the third owners. The house is set on 4.35 acres on both sides of Silverado Trail and is bounded to the west by the Napa River.

What makes this house unique

It would be hard to find a property in Napa Valley more centrally located to the very best wineries, historic downtowns (i.e. St. Helena & Calistoga), or more bike-accessible than this property. Silverado Trail is the backbone connecting the finest wineries in the Valley and has continuous bike lanes. The house has the privacy of oak woodlands and vinyards, the Napa River Wildlife Refuge and historic Pratt Ave. Bridge while still being a quick walk, bike, or drive into historic downtown St. Helena - (website hidden)

We enjoyed our stay! Big, spacious charming home close to many wineries and good eats. Home was comfortable and relaxing. Kitchen was fully stocked for all your cooking needs. Our hosts welcomed us with local bread, orange juice, and eggs - delicious and very kind. Edward was a pleasure to work with and attentive to our needs. Highly recommend this home. Thank you!

Great stay

Cute little house. Loved that the owners left some juice and breakfast food for the guests. Nice, private location. Kept windows open at night due to heat upstairs (during summer), and traffic was subsequently a little loud at times but nothing too bad. Overall really enjoyed my stay here.

the home was nicely kept and very true to the 20s time period. There is supposed to be 2 bathrooms but there is only one! It is also very noisy in the morning with the traffic on the silverado trail. But overall we enjoyed our stay!

Convenient location, but old, noisy, & only 1 bath

We were really disappointed and I'm surprised to see so many positive reviews; perhaps the street noise is only an issue on weekday mornings?

I understand that the house is old, but there were many things that were simply not maintained - broken windows, ripped screen, old paint, tired furniture/fixtures, etc. Also, it was not very clean, which was disappointing given a rather steep cleaning fee ($150). Specifically, there was lots of dust, grime, and cobwebs. However, what was most uncomfortable was that there was really only one usable bathroom (the other is accessed from outside and quite unpleasant) and the street noise was unbearable. Because it was very hot, we had to leave the windows open and the street noise kept everyone up from about 4:15AM onward. This was a Monday morning though.

This said, the owner was responsive and easy to deal with: accepted our reservation quickly, returned damage deposit promptly, etc.

Rustic charm

Took 6 friends to st Helena for a 40th birthday bash. The preservation house was so quaint and well designed. I loved the feel of the house. The Silverado Trail gets pretty busy, but despite some road noise this was an amazing vacation destination. I'd study there again in a heartbeat.
