Tamara Lupoloff built and planted her farm here in Hakalau. Recently retired from 27 years in the travel industry, she knew this little piece of Hawaii was where she wanted to be. Her planning and hard work has allowed her to share her dream with others, and she enjoys welcoming guests from all over the world to experience the serenity and beauty of Hawaii.
Tamara Lupoloff purchased this cottage in 2005
Tamara loves the tropical weather and ability to grow a wide variety or fruits year round. The view and the neighborhood, with her close proximity to the ocean, make it home.
Tamara custom-built the houses and planted all ten acres just the way she had always dreamed. The views are magnificent. Guests have space to stretch out and get away from it all while enjoying the easy, beautiful drive to all that Hilo, and the Big Island, has to offer.
Our family of four had a very enjoyable stay at the family fruit farm. It was perfect for our 11 month old & 4 year old, with lots of room to roam around the back porch and the yard. My son loved checking out the chickens each day. The home is well stocked, has TV, Wifi and a few board games. We checked ourselves in and were greeted by a nice welcome note on the refrigerator, delicious banana bread and papaya. There's a book on the top of the refrigerator with basic info./instructions and you basically get as much interaction with the owners as you want, or none at all, if you want that too. Our last day there, we took a nice walk/tour of the fruit farm with Cameron and are glad we did! Tamara & Cameron are both welcoming, friendly and very easy to chat with. We felt very comfortable and would definitely stay there again! It truly felt like we were in our own private little home.
It was a bit humid in the evening and there are ceiling fans and table/standing fans but overnight it got chilly, especially with the rain. The only caution are the mosquitos, but it's to be expected. Mosquito punks and repellent were provided.
This was a nice change from staying at the hotel! It's close to Kolekole beach park where we went each day for a dip in the freezing water and it's near Akaka Falls and Botanical World, if you're looking to do a little hiking to check out the water falls, kids maze, do some ziplining and ride segways.
My daughter and i recently stayed at the cottage on the farm. We were only there four days but it was very convenient for us to drive to volcanoes np and also up the hamakua coast. For us it was a beautiful, tropical retreat and wished we had more time to just sit on the lovely covered lanai.
the cottage was comfortable and hawaiian rustic in a good way. tamara has such wonderful decorating touches and artwork. Pretty heavenly to walk around the farm and enjoy all the fruit. this is a great place if you want the experience of being on the big island in more of an authentic and rural atmosphere.
cottage was super clean and bathroom was large. kitchen had everything we needed and we made dinner there each night and sat outside on the lanai. best atmosphere!!!
also, tamara was really easy and prompt to deal with and she makes the best banana bread which disappeared too fast! totally recommend this cottage for a fun change of environment away from resorts.
The Family Fruit Farm was perfect for what my family needed - beautiful location, with little distraction. We had lovely breakfasts out on the patio, with our gecko friends, and got to see the Milky Way for the first time in many years, due to the lack of light pollution. We took short day trips to Kilauea and the black sand beach, shopped in Hilo, and visited the Botanical Gardens. The scenic route off of 19 is awesome (affectionately dubbed "Jurassic Park" by the kids) and has the best smoothies I've ever had at What's Shakin'. Tamara was friendly and helpful and kept a lovely cottage. We definitely recommend staying here.
This is a beautiful cottage with all you need for a pleasant vacation. Tamara is a wonderful host who made us feel welcome and at home. We loved having breakfast on the lanai or simply sitting there breathing the clean air, gazing at the blues and greens and enjoying this peaceful place. We would definitely stay there again. Thank you Tamara!

My husband and our three teenage kids spent 5 nights at the Family Fruit Farm, and it was perfect for our base to explore the Big Island! Loved the lanai for coffee and breakfast in the morning. We had everything we needed to be very comfortable for the trip. Thanks to Tamara for the fresh banana bread and basket of fruit to welcome us. We had a fruit tasting at dinner one night! We never turned on the TV, but had a very competitive game or two of Scrabble every night! It was perfect.
Hakalau beach is five minutes away and is a great place to go surfing, fishing, diving, or kayaking. The Hakalau River flows into the ocean here;you can swim in the cold river and float into the warm ocean. There is a small black sand beach and bathrooms are available. It is a historic site with ruins from the plantation days. This beautiful side of the Big Island, known as the Hamakua Coast, has numerous waterfalls. The famous and beautiful Akaka Falls, a favorite theme of many local musicians, is located 15 minutes away in the quaint town of Honomu, which has places to eat and shop and one of two spectacular and popular zip lines. The other way towards Waimea just 10 minutes away is Laupahoehoe point, which is named for the leaf-shaped lava along its beaches, is 15 minutes away and features the train museum and the 50's cafe and the newly opened Paapaloa Country Store and Cafe.. We have two botanical gardens. Hilo is 20 minutes away and Waimea cowboy country, home to the famous Parker Ranch, is just 55 minutes away. The spectacular ocean view drive stretches in both directions.
