This renovated cabin was on skids, and we have added a beautiful sunroom/living area with a walk out grade patio to complete the design. It has solar power, with a back up generator..and has a pull out couch, as well as twins in each bedroom, so sleeping capacity is 6. We have a wonderful weber grill, as well as a fire pit on the patio, outside dining and a nice covered front porch, for shade in the hot afternoons...also has a gazebo, on the top of the elk pen here on the Ranch. Nice place for a nap, or practice your morning or evening yoga!
Terry Porter was born and raised here in New Castle and makes Porter Ranch his home and living. He raises Rocky Mountain Elk here, and is a custom Hay Rancher. Custom hay is his bread and butter, but the elk sure are fun!
Terry and Mary purchased this cabin in 2013
This cabin is for those special someone's who really want to get away from it all. You are completely secluded, with all the luxuries of home..you must be judicious with the power, and understand that there is a lot of responsibility with being in with the elk. BUT,,,,talk about a unique experience. You will love it.
Covered front porch, nice outside clawfoot tub for a sun shower, or a dog bath, private gazebo and complete solitude. Outside grill and fire pit, pull out couch and walk out grade Colorado red stone patio. Really nice and very very private.FREE WIFI NOW. NO AFTER DARK CHECK INS.
What a wonderful place this is. We had a change in plans last min we called and Mary was super accommodating. For sure off the beaten path. The views are breathtaking. Me and my wife will hopefully for sure return next year!
Awesome place! Great place to unwind, forget about work and experience Colorado.
If you want luxury, stay at the Hilton in Denver. If you want to sleep deeper than you ever have, breathe fresh mountain air and a view that only God can paint, this is the place.
Never thought you could gaze upon that many stars in the sky while listening to the coyotes howl.
Abundance of wildlife at your door step.
Great place to be with friends or do a little soul searching.
Mary, your ribs were awesome. Hope we can have them again next year or sooner.
As we began shucking the corn for the grill, we looked up to see that the Elk Herd had returned to join us for dinner!!...same as they had for breakfast early that morning. Fantastic.
Such graceful yet wild animal beauty grazing in the foreground of the stunning views of the valley beyond...this is what a vacation is all about.
I booked this cabin to celebrate my Mom's 80th birthday.
A getaway for her (and me!) when she visits Boulder from Chicago every year. Mary greeted me and my Mom with a birthday card, flowers and birthday cupcakes - how's that for above and beyond?!
These are just a few of the special moments created by Mary and her husband Terry, Proprietors of the Elk Pen cabin above New Castle, Co. They also have a cabin at the bottom of the valley.
I could not have picked a better place for me and my Mom to enjoy each other's company as we absorbed the silent nature all around us.
This cabin is perfect - stop looking - this is the one!!

Oh why did the end of the vacation come so soon? Three nights at this wonderful cabin wasn't enough. Maybe will have to stay for a Month next time.
A perfect place for a romantic getaway for the wife and I. Our two dogs loved exploring the field around the cabin, and even had chipmunks to chase around. The call of the Elk at night was like them saying good night, and seeing them each day was a spectacle to behold.
The cabin while small housed a very capable kitchen. Wonderfully comfortable beds, and even a pull out couch. The patio with a gas BBQ grill was wonderful, and did a great job on some steaks we picked up at the local mart, in New Castle. I would recommend bringing your own firewood, if you aren't packing a chainsaw. If you do have a chain saw, then there is plenty of wood for the fire pit.
The hosts Mary and her husband were very friendly, and treated us like family, rather than paying guests. While the road up to the cabin is passable with a car on normal summer/fall days, if you happen to be up there when the rain hits hard, or you are planning a winter/spring trip you might opt for a more equipped 4 wheel drive vehicle.
We plan on making this property a staple in our vacation plans for many years to come.
Two nights stay in a busy tour of Colorado. Bliss, so peaceful and relaxing that we didn't venture out for the day, just rested, enjoyed the tranquility, the views and the BBQ. We stayed in the Elk Pen so were greeted in the morning by the Elk calling each other as they passed our cabin. Throughout the day we were entertained by two busy chipmunks. Our hosts were wonderful, so welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. Although neither of us ride we had the most amazing early morning ride on Mary's gorgeous horses. Morgan and Corrin who took us out were excellent - 'thank you'. All in all an amazing experience. A huge 'Thank You' to Mary, Terry, the dogs, horses, goats, elk, etc.
Our newest cabin is OFF the grid, and special people will enjoy the quiet and solitude up inside our elk pen. We are minutes from the 'funnest town in U.S.A.' Glenwood Springs, and just as close,to Rifle, with world renowned rock climbing and reservoirs! Come visit us and bring your camera...you will not want to leave. WE DO NOT DO LATE CHECK INS ON THIS CABIN! ARRIVAL MUST BE DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS, THERE ARE NOT EXCEPTIONS!
