Why JahSun Martini chose Asheville

Setting the standard for residential homes!

The Nauhaus is the first Hempcrete Home in America, and is setting the standard for what is possible in terms of alternative energy and building.

Complete with all the modern amenities of home; within a rustic setting, surrounded by nature, with a creek running through the backyard, as well as close access to the Greenway trail along the Hominy Creek (river) , and walking distance from Haywood Road / West Asheville Village, and 5 mi to both downtown Ashe-ville and the Biltmore Estate and Village.

Asheville has proven to attract the most genuine, unique, and authentic people we have ever met. We love our Community, and are so grateful to have relocated here from the West Coast. It is an amazing place to raise a child, as we are quickly finding out.

What makes this apartment unique

Many of the details listed above, of why we chose this beautiful and unique home!

We love being so close to all major attractions, shopping, and restaurants, yet be able to come home to such a peaceful abode nestled in the trees, with a flowing creek in our backyard, and a trail with 'hobbit' style bridge across the creek, through the woods, and to the Hominy Creek Greenway.

Also, love sitting outside on the brick patio or porch with candlelight listening to nature's orchestra, watching the fireflies, and on a clear night the majestic starlit sky!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a lovely stay at JahSun and Lizzy's place in West Asheville. The neighborhood is wooded residential, about a mile from the shops in West Asheville, and a few more miles to downtown Asheville. (You do want a car here, although the intrepid could probably get along on bikes. ) I was glad we stayed in West Asheville as it would be easy to overlook otherwise and it has its own character and charm. JahSun and Lizzy are wonderful people and of course they have a bundle of joy in Sophia. The house is very cool and the apt downstairs, where you will be staying, is perfect for two people. Very restful, terrific few days there, we will be back.

Good location, nice house, VERY dirty

  • 3 of 5

We rented this house last minute for an Asheville getaway. Jahsun was wonderful! He worked out all the details and met us at the property. He mentioned that he would be making sure that it was cleaned and ready for us, but was rushed to get it all done in time. However, when we got there and he left we noticed that it wasn't just a hurried cleaning. The floors were filthy. I swept the whole house and got piles of dirt and cobwebs; more than would have resulted from a hurried cleaning. The sole toilet was brown with rust and literally had other peoples' feces stuck to the side of it. The stove top, when I cleaned it with a scrub pad came off dark dark brown after repeated cleanings. The porcelain sink was cracked in two places, and the oven had caked on burnt food and obviously had not been cleaned in months. The upstairs loft was unfinished with a thin futon mattress laying on the ground. The list goes on and on. I spent the entire first evening scrubbing the house so that we could enjoy it for the rest of the stay.

On the positive side, as I mentioned Jahsun was very nice and very informative about the area. The house itself was beautiful and well located. In the end we really enjoyed our stay. I left Jahsun a detailed note with our cleaning concerns and asked him to consider waiving the considering cleaning fee. We never heard from him, which honestly disappointed us. I did not intend to write a somewhat negative review, but I am concerned that other renters do not have the same experience that we did.

Cozy and Convenient

  • 4 of 5

The apartment was cozy, and the location is convenient to pretty much everything - all the great restaurants on Haywood Road, and a quick hop on I-40 or I-240 will have you anywhere else in Asheville within 10 minutes.

Beautiful, with some surprises

  • 3 of 5

The Nauhaus apt is ideal for a short stay if you don't plan to cook (or reheat food) and if you have no physical limitations. Love the feel of the home and serenity of the patio. Could be a 5 star with some attn to detail. I loved Jason's recommendation for Sunny Point Cafe and hiking in Dupont State Park - beautiful waterfalls.

The description "fully equipped kitchenette" is not accurate. In fact, it's quite limited. I've stayed in many condos and rental homes and know what is to be expected in the way of cookware. I bought food for simple meals before checking in, and the lack of some basic things caused me to change meal plans and even throw away food. I found no condiments, only salt, pepper, sugar, and coffee. One aluminum skillet, but nothing non-stick. One small saucepan, with no lid. A metal steamer, with one of three legs missing. One baking sheet left in oven, with burnt food on it, and no foil to cover this mess. Measuring spoons, missing the Tbsp (which would be helpful for measuring coffee). There is no microwave. I learned the hard way that you need to turn some lights off before using the stove or oven; otherwise it will trip the breaker. (This must be the reason there is no microwave...and also the reason there is no vent in the bathroom - only a switch plate with missing knobs.)

If you have physical limitations, you should know that the mulched walkway leading to the apartment entrance is long and steep, with no handrails. It is not well-lit at night. (An attempt has been made to light it with solar lights, but many are missing or broken. I am physically fit, but tripped on a wooden step going uphill in the dark.) At the entrance to the apt (bottom of the walkway) there is a brick area with one step down. The bricks across this step are not set in mortar; they have merely been placed down to look neat, but are not at all sturdy to step on.

Little thing/big hassle: Hair dryer is listed as being included, but I found none upon arrival. After way too many texts and a phone conversation about this, Jason discovered that the upstairs guests had taken the hair dryer from its place the laundry room. (Not the bathroom!?) He asked us both to replace it in the laundry room after use. So I shared both the hair dryer and laundry W/D with the upstairs tenants.

2 other surprises: I was awakened at 6:45 every morning by footsteps above my bedroom. The wood bed frame creaks badly with every move and the mattress dips badly on the right side.

Everything as described

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our visit to Asheville, and Nauhaus is in a very pleasant neighborhood. JahSun met us at arrival, told us about the property and answered any questions we had. Since he and Lizzy had recently moved to another residence we had minimal contact with them. We had hoped for a television, but it is not in the property description. JahSun quickly answered our inquiry about it.

Notes:
Our place is really unique and special - being the first Hempcrete home in America. The location is prime, in a quiet neighborhood, surrounded by trees and a flowing creek. Yet, we are within walking distance to Haywood Rd in West Ashevillage, and 10-15 minute drive of The Blue Ridge Parkway, downtown Asheville, Biltmore Estate, and other major attractions. We are grateful to support any special requests such as setting up space with flowers, wine, or chocolates. Will discuss details upon request. In addition, we have friends who are healers and massage therapists who are willing to come to the apt for session. We have great recommendations, and feel honored to welcome you to Asheville!
