Hualalai Cottage, our stand-alone one-bedroom, 500 sq.ft. ohana is light, airy, and your perfect home away from home! It is located on the gorgeous, sunny side of upcountry Waimea, also called Kamuela, on the Big Island of Hawaii, within a few minutes of the beautiful Kohala coast.
It is a perfect quiet, serene refuge or starting point for the wonderful attractions of our beautiful island.
The cottage includes a queen bed, single airbed, tiled bathroom with walk-in shower, large closets, and a living-dining-kitchen room with all the amenities you will need for making simple, delicious meals.
It is centrally located - 45 minutes from the Kona Airport and 1.5 hours from the Hilo airport. Our gorgeous beaches are 10-15 minutes down the hill. The picturesque town of Waimea is 10 minutes away, quaint Hawi and Honoka'a towns 30 minutes, and Mauna Kea 60 minutes. We are close to many restaurants and farmers' markets featuring our local fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats as well as wood-fire baked breads and other delicacies.
Our 2200' elevation allows for cooler evenings and nights - perfect for deep and peaceful slumbers!
There is a 'Hele On' bus ($1) which stops hourly in front of the property to take you to and from Waimea Town if you like.
Check in time is 3:00 or later and check out time 11AM or earlier. We are flexible with these times whenever possible.
An excellent book about our island with information on beaches, hikes, restaurants, and activities is 'Hawaii The Big Island Revealed,' by Andrew Doughty. There is a copy in the cottage for your enjoyment but you might consider purchasing your own before you arrive.
Many of our wonderful guests have remarked that they loved their stay in the cottage so much that they wished they had booked a longer visit. We are fortunate to have had many of our guests return months later!
You are welcome to ask about two-night stays.
We live in the main house but most likely you will rarely see us. And while sincerely respecting your privacy, we are always happy and available to answer questions and give directions.

Originally from Northern California and Arkansas, we have made our home here in this sweet town of Waimea since 2003. We love our little spot of paradise on the Big Island and welcome you to it too!
Lloyd & Loring Howell purchased this cottage in 2005
We were attracted to this perfect location, weather, neighborhood, and elevation. Being close to lovely Waimea town, the coast, and many other destinations is a pleasure!
Hualalai Cottage is a uniquely peaceful and private abode!
Being a guest at Hualalai Cottage is like staying with family (the good ones). The cottage is wonderfully appointed, with all the amenities that you could want, and then some. From the extra blankets, to the boogie boards and snorkel gear, guide books and maps, all the way to the mini rice cooker, the Howells have thought about everything. Their care and attention to detail doesn't just stop with the amenities, Loring is one of the most warm and gracious hosts we've ever had the pleasure of meeting. You really do feel like a guest in their home, while they afford you the utmost privacy. Can't say enough wonderful things about this place and its owners. But I will give you one more example of why it's so special... During our stay here, I had the misfortune of suffering a rather serious accident while at the beach. I ended up having to go to the hospital (in the middle of the town Christmas parade) and was on crutches with a splint on my leg. Loring went above and beyond to make sure that I was well taken care of and have everything I could possibly need. She is a true gem and I'm glad to have had the opportunity to meet her, as well as stay in her lovely home. Moreover, the cottage is located in beautiful Waimea which, is at the juncture of some of the most beautiful rolling hills (anywhere) and the best beaches on the Big Island. While it might not look like it on the map, Waimea is actually quite "centrally" located if you're planning on exploring the northern half of the island. This is the closest (nice) place from which to base yourself if you are interested in visiting Mauna Lea volcano as well. You can't go wrong with this place. Happy travels.
This property was all we hoped it would be: beautiful and private. The hosts were as nice as could be and add truly nice touches that made us feel like they really cared that our vacation stay was pleasant. The cottage is immaculately maintained and we were welcomed with fresh fruit, muffins and coffee which was greatly appreciated since we arrived after dark and didn't have to find a grocery store that night. The location is perfect! The best beaches on the island are 10 minutes away - Hapuna Beach, Beach 69, and the petroglyphs/, all which have beautiful sandy beaches, some shade, and snorkling. The small town of Waimea is 5 minutes away and we made an easy day trip up to the north part of the island to visit the Vanilla Farm, Havi, and cowboy country. Going south of Kona for snorkeling, shopping or to the City of Refuge is also an easy drive. Can't say enough good things!
Very cozy and beautiful cottage, very well equipped, located in beautiful garden. Good spot for excursions in the North of Big Island . Very nice and charming owners. Perfect stay!! Thanks so much, Loring and Lloyd! 5 Stars!!!
we were welcomed with open arms upon our arrival. it was late and flying from new york we were exhausted. after we were given the brief but efficient tour of the area we crashed on an extremely comfy bed. due to the no AC I'm hawaii I personally needed an extra fan which was available in the closet, my fiance however was very comfortable and said he didn't need it. the muffins and coffee the next morning were so helpful and delicious since we hadnt had time to grab food for ourselves to prepare for our trip. if you have a chance to stay here, do it! you have your own little home away from home in a beautiful and quiet setting.
My husband & I stayed in this lovely Ohana for a few days while we were here for our daughter's wedding. It was the perfect place to call home during lots of activity in Waimea and Kohala. The owner's were wonderful and very attentive, yet allowed us a nice quiet, private stay. We enjoyed our time and will stay again next time we need a getaway!
It has been nearly six months since our visit to Hualalai Cottage in Kamuela ... yet our experience there is still very vivid and holds a fond memory. The cottage is appointed perfectly and is exactly as described by the wonderful hosts, Lloyd and Loring. As soon as we arrived, Loring greeted us, helped us bring our belongings in, and truly made us feel right at home. Everything one could possibly need was provided. The location was perfect ... close to town and beautiful beaches. Lloyd and Loring are very sweet and were very respectful of our privacy. They were extremely helpful as far as getting around the area ... tips on beaches, restaurants, farm markets etc. We could not have asked for better hosts ... highly recommended and lovely. Thank you again Lloyd and Loring. "Pent up in Pennsylvania".
The cottage had a lot of room with all the amenities one could ask for. Lloyd showed us around and explained everything about the fans, lights, etc. There is a very big walk in closet. Lloyd even helped us with our luggage. The cottage was very clean and well-maintained. Later on Lloyd was doing some hedge trimming but asked us first if it would be okay. I was impressed with the customer service that he didn't want to disturb us. We didn’t mind watching him work ! Loring was away when we checked in but we met her later.
The cottage is near excellent restaurants. It is a short drive to the beaches and beach gear is available to use. Loring and Lloyd have provided a book with restaurant suggestions, menus, and places to go.
Lloyd and Loring are excellent hosts and have a very nice cottage. We would stay here again and would recommend to our friends.
