About Vivi Valentine & William Hutchinson

I always had a dream of living on a farm. We were lucky to be able to buy this old farm and be able to bring it back to life in the last few years. Adding animals and clearing pastures, fixing up the old farmhouse and the stone walls. It is a magical place in the middle of a magical island.

Vivi Valentine & William Hutchinson purchased this house in 2009

Why Vivi Valentine & William Hutchinson chose Jamestown (Conanicut Island)

Because we loved the idea of bringing our kids up in this environment and we also were very interested in protecting this property.

What makes this house unique

The location! You can walk to town, to the beach, and to a ferry that can take you to Newport.

Its a peaceful farm setting in the middle of a beautiful summer destination. Jamestown is a lovely little town, the village is a 10 minute or less walk from the farm and sits on Conanicut Island which is right in the middle of the spectacular Narragansett Bay, Newport is a short ferry ride or drive away! It's a 2 1/2 mile drive from the farm, or you can take the ferry from downtown Jamestown. Jamestown has some very nice restaurants, and bakeries. The Jamestown ARTS Center has summer camps for kids, art classes for adults, and lots of great programs and events throughout the year. There are also other summer camps for kids here; Save The Bay summer camps, sailing camp with the Conanicut Island Sailing Foundation, kayak and paddle board rentals, etc...

There are fabulous restaurants in Jamestown and Newport, The Tennis Hall of Fame, the amazing Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals, lots of other great music, festivals and activities. Sailing, paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing, beaches, shopping, surfing, etc...

beautiful farm house

  • 5 of 5

We were able to use the farm house for the reception of our wedding.

Green grass, stone walls and farm animals- fresh eggs from the chickens- and the sound of the ocean while you sleep.

Beautiful house with oil paintings, an open kitchen- and all the charm one would expect from an 18th century New England farm house.

The owners were delightful, I highly recommend this property rental.

Relaxing location, historic house with tasteful updates

  • 5 of 5

Vivi and Hutch have done a beautiful job restoring this historic 18th century farmhouse, including modern conveniences without sacrificing the rustic character of the building. The farm is a quiet idyll that is at the same time minutes away from town. The farm animals provide a lot of entertainment, but there is tv and Internet if you must have your screen time.

Paradise for a family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had an wonderful time at Vivi's farm. The setting is amazing, the house is full of history, and the proximity with the animals is magical for city people like us. We also enjoyed the beach just down the street, the great playground, and the art centre. We can't wait to go back.

Perfect family gathering location.

  • 5 of 5

This was not the Ritz or Hyatt, but with six adults, three children and baby it was perfect! The major items that made the obviously very antiquated house quite comfortable were the updated windows and screens, updated kitchen appliances and updated bathroom facilities. As previous reviewers have described, the floor plan is designed around the central chimney so each room could have a fireplace. This necessarily causes the flow of traffic to be through the bedrooms to either the bath (one on each floor) or the staircase. While privacy suffers a bit, the sense of togetherness is enhanced! The kitchen is not large, but meal preparation was easily accomplished. The large attached dining room or the part of the kitchen that has been converted to a sitting area plus the adjoining breakfast nook gave the sense of openness needed for entertaining so many people over a week's stay. Many in our family like to walk. The walk to the heart of town at a leisurely pace takes about :15, where morning coffee and tranquil views of the harbor are a post card-like delight. The real "icing-on-the-cake" has to be the interaction with the farm animals. The chickens were especially fun. Feed them popcorn, and they'll follow you anywhere! Finally, our hosts were warm and accommodating.

Our reason for visiting was a graduation from the Naval War College in nearby (:15 drive) Newport. Tolls across the east passage are $4.00 each way. Plan your trips accordingly.

If you haven't visited the old mansions in Newport, palaces, really, I recommend a half-day or longer for that.

Dellightful girls weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our weekend getaway was a total delight. At first we were looking for a place to stay for a bridal shower, but we fell in love with the farmhouse photos and decided to make a weekend out of it and have the bachelorette in Newport! The house itself is the perfect mix of colonial charm and modern amenities, including a stunning modern kitchen, washer dryer, wifi, etc.

Vivi and Hutch were available to share all sorts of fun details about the farm and introduce us to the goats, donkeys, and chickens. They went above and beyond to bring us fresh eggs from their hens, too!

Given that most of the beds are twin size and the bedrooms are interconnected, this isn't the ideal place for multiple couples, but for a large family, girls getaway, etc, it is simply perfect.

One of a kind. Can't say enough about how much we loved the both the physical space of the house and the magical vibe of the farm.

THANK YOU!

Charming and relaxing beautifully restored farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying in this authentically restored 1750 farmhouse on a working farm. The house and property were so peaceful and tranquil. Many features of the house reflect its historic nature. There is a fireplace in the center of the house and all the rooms are built around the fireplace so that there is a hearth in every room. The fireplace was not working on our trip, but the main hearth near the kitchen was set up to show how people of that era would use it to cook their meals.

The kitchen and bathrooms are brand new. Furnishings were chosen to match the historic nature of the house while providing all the modern comforts of life. The spacious, open kitchen has all the necessary amenities to allow the home chef to prepare great meals.

The owners are great and took the time to visit with us and answer questions about the property and its inhabitants. You can interact with sheep, goats, chickens and donkeys. We enjoyed drinking coffee on the patio in the mornings while watching the free-range chickens roam the garden.

Jamestown is a great little town, approximately a 15 minute walk from the house. This historic town has many small shops and restaurants and you can catch the ferry to Newport there in-season. We ate at the Narragansett Café as well as the East Ferry Deli and they were both wonderful.

We enjoyed our stay immensely and can’t wait to return.
