We had a realy wonderful weekend at “Casa do Alecrim”! The house sits in a small and typical Alentejo village, charming and very quiet. The garden is in good care and very aromatic, with a privileged view over the wonderful and extensive land (at this time pleasantly green). we had a fantastic barbecue in the terrace facing the view and the children couldn’t leave the pool (they love it!) .
The house is typical and welcoming, decorated simply and tastefully, clean, with everything running and fast internet.
The hostess was very kind and available, and offered us great suggestions to enjoy the region. So we visit the castle of Monsaraz, with a range of shops and a very nice esplanade. We were on the shores of the Great Lake Alqueva (simply gorgeous!) and later we had a perfect dinner in the unmissable restaurant "sem-fim", near the village.
We loved our staying, it was a fantastic and relaxing weekend!

Had a wonderful stay last weekend with my son! The house was cosy, warm, clean and welcoming!
We truly had a well deserved break! everything we needed was available, the kitchen was readdy to use, the internet connection was speedy and hassle free and when we arrived the fire place was on! it heated the whole house!
I cant remember waking up to the sound of real birds in years, it was a privilege to be surrounded by nature and to show my son what real country animals sound like as opposed to the sounds in books or tv.
We didnt try the swimming pool but want to come back in Summer just for that!!the garden was well kept and provided a nice environment to sit and chat while enjoying the first spring sun!
The location is great, short drive to the supermarket, Monsaraz and great restaurants. Great for gorgeous walks!
We will be coming back and will surely recomend it to friends!
We were looking for a quiet week with guaranteed sunshine and private pool - and the small and pretty Casa do Alecrim did deliver exactly that - plus some stunning views over the plain from the terrace. We knew it was going to be very hot without air conditioning, and it was but we even managed to watch the London Olympics opening ceremony on Portuguese television while lying on the comfy bed. So, all in all it was a very affordable and relaxing week.
However, although we found the decor insight and the garden all very tasteful, it didn't feel very clean. The inside of the house was reasonably clean but we had difficulty keeping the ants out of the kitchen. However, if you sealed your bread and put all other food into the fridge, the ants didn't really bother us as much as the very dirty outdoor terrace cushions, especially as we found out that two stray dogs who belong to the village lay on those cushions nearly every day with filthy fur and worms hanging out of their backsides. Carina, the owner, was extremely nice and warned us about the dogs when we arrived - apparently the couple the week before fed them, which they shouldn't have done. We did not feed them and we shut the gate all the time but the stray dogs were still able to come in. They are very cute and quiet dogs, who never bark but they are so flee and worm ridden that we had to restrain ourselves from stroking them. We hoped that by ignoring them they wouldn't bother the people renting after us so much.
And there were little things like a dirty BBQ in the corner of the garden, a not-working water feature with foul water and lots of dead wasps in it, sticky candle wax on and under an unused little table outside the house, old garden furniture with dirty cushions.
Carina also warned us about the wasp infestation of the lawn when we arrived, and she was right that they only came out when the lawn was watered (automatically sprinkled every morning) and that they did not bother us at all. However, you would not want to walk barefoot when dozens of wasp hover a few centimetres above the strip of lawn between the cottage and the pool.
Still a relaxing week for a very reasonable price but slightly ruined by small things that made the location feel not very clean.
What a lovely retreat! The cottage is traditionally furnished and has bags of character. If you are looking for a simple and peaceful property, this could be what you are looking for. The swimming pool is great and the garden is beautiful. Carina is very helpful and will provide ideas about where to go/what to do if you ask her. The surrounding area is full of surprises, from typical villages, prehistoric standing stones, attractive towns with Roman remains, and as many castles as you could wish for. The Spainish border is very close by. Of course, you will have to drag yourself away from the hammock and leave your book to see them! There are places to eat within a short drive away. We stayed for a month and had a wonderful holiday. The cottage may be a little snug for 4 adults, but it would be fine for a family. There were only 2 of us and it was perfect. Thoroughly recommend this.
Firstly, I don't think the photos really give you an idea of how good a holiday cottage this is. It really was everything my wife and I had hoped for and was very well equipped (better than ones we have stayed in previously in Portugal at a similar rate). The 'casa' is situated in as quiet and picturesque a village as you can imagine and the swimming pool and garden were wonderful. Carina (the owner) was very helpful given how busy she is and allowed us a great deal of privacy.
There is a lot to see and do around the area and the surrounding countryside is simply stunning (as is the view from the garden down into the valley). I would recommend lunch/dinner in Monsaraz and the stunning little city of Evora is a little over half-an-hour away and has much to recommend it. If you like wine, there are several wineries (adegas) that you can visit in and around the nearby town of Reguengos and I believe you can do more sporty activities around the Barragem de Alqueva and other places nearby.
All-in-all, if you're looking for a quiet getaway in a well-appointed holiday cottage, then I can thoroughly recommend this one!
The house is fantastic, exactly like the pictures and the discription is accurate. It was very clean, cosy and well-maintained. Carina, the owner was a darling, very nice and helpful.
The place is wonderful for a romantic getaway, or for a small family. The pool is great, as well as the view and the outstanding silence and bird singing. We had a lovely 4 days at the Casa do Alecrim. The surrounding villages are amazing, with very nice people and good restaurants.
The village of Carrapatelo is in a sweet typical village in one of the most beautiful area of the Alentejo. Many medieval castles can be visit with small day trips the nearest 10 minutes away being Monsaraz.,and in the evenings enjoy your self in many local restaurants to dine and try the typical Alentejano cuisine and local wine. There are many wineries open to visitors. Also the village of S.Pedro is the largest pottery village where you can find still hand made pots and plates all beautifully hand painted. In the spring the fields are breathtaking with flowers....and walks and picnics on the biggest artificial lake in Europe are memorable. Boats can be hired on the lake. Perfect spots for bird watchers. This region is also known for Dolmens and Menirs dated back to 5000a.c The marble quarries of Vila Viçosa are not to be missed. Spain is just around the corner waiting to be explored. This is a country cottage and there are insects and bugs. bees ,wasps ants etc.
