About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8

Welcome to Hale Mauka, our 'home in the mountains'. Our three bedroom, two bath house is truly our second home in Tahoe Donner. We are proud to be able to share it with you throughout the year.

Hale Mauka can comfortably sleep eight guests. A downstairs master suite with a 42in TV is down the hall from the full kitchen. Upstairs, the 'kid's room' contains two sets of bunk beds and a pair of fat boy bean bag stools for lounging. The other upstairs room has a 42in TV and queen bed. A full living room and dining room combine to give lots of room for families to stretch out and relax after a full day enjoying the Tahoe surroundings. There is a wood stove in the living room that can heat the entire home; baseboard heaters and humidifiers are also in each room to further control the temperature.

Don't want to totally unplug while you're away? No worries -- high speed internet is included along with free WiFi for guests. Three LCD Smart TVs (55in in the living room, 42in in two bedrooms) have built-in Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime connections so you can stream videos to your heart's content. The living room TV also includes an HD cable feed so you can watch the major sports games in real time. A Mac Mini is in the loft along with an Airprint-capable printer, so you can surf the web or even get some work done if needed.

Located on Alder Creek Road, it is one of the first thoroughfares in Tahoe Donner to get plowed, providing clear access to your snow sport destinations. The Tahoe Donner Downhill ski area is 5 minutes away, as is the Alder Creek Adventure (Cross Country/Equestrian) Center. An easy jaunt down 89 takes you to Northstar, Squaw and other Tahoe destinations.

Great views of Alder Creek can be seen from the front deck. The rear deck leads to a wonderful backyard play area where kids can go downhill with the provided sleds or just roll around in the snow. You can even play horseshoes in the horseshoe pitch in the front yard.

The kitchen is fully equipped with cookware, utensils, and dinnerware. There is also a full size washer and dryer so you can pack lightly.

Guests (for a nominal fee) have access to all Tahoe Donner amenities, including downhill and cross country skiing, snow play, equestrian center, mountain biking, orienteering (geocaching), tennis courts, pools, Trout Creek Recreation Center, and Tahoe Donner Golf Course.

High thread-count sheets, down comforters and memory foam mattresses on all beds, along with soft towels ensure that you can relax in luxury after a full day of fun.

NOTE: We strongly prefer to rent to family groups. Parties of 6 or more must include children in order for your booking request to be accepted.

About Owner/ Property Manager

We love being able to get away from the bustling city to enjoy the outdoors.

Owner/ Property Manager purchased this house in 2012

Why Owner/ Property Manager chose Lake Tahoe North Shore

We chose this house because of its proximity to all of the Tahoe Donner amenities, including downhill and cross country skiing, the equestrian center, and all the trails for hiking and biking. Its location on a main Tahoe Donner thoroughfare greatly reduces the chances of getting snowed in or out.

What makes this house unique

Even though this is our vacation get-away, it's still nice to be connected when we want to be. Free WiFi and multiple large screen TVs ensure we have plenty of entertainment. The slope in the backyard is great fun all year round; it's great for sledding in the winter.

Wonderful, comfortable home

We had a great time at Hale Mauka! The home is very comfortable including comfy beds and sheets, plenty of firewood for heat and that cozy mountain feeling, board games for the kids, etc. Thank you Ed and Bernadette for letting us share your home!

The propane tank was empty. We would have liked some patio furniture. There was plenty of paper products clean and comfortable. Could use a meat fork in kitchen. Owner promptly called back with a question I had

Perfect for our family vacation in Truckee!

  • 5 of 5

Hale Mauka was just right for my husband and I to share time with our young adult children. From our home in North Carolina, we researched and found the house on VRBO. When we arrived, it was just as we had hoped. Since we like to cook and share meals, we appreciated the well equipped kitchen, and were pleased to find some basic herbs and spices (like oregano & cumin). The house was spacious, clean and comfortable, and the neighborhood was quiet. We enjoyed daily visits from deer and chipmunks. The location was convenient for accessing a number of good hikes and for going to Tahoe to swim. We made good use of the Wi-Fi (no problems), but never turned on a TV (though 2 or 3 were available). The table on the back deck was a nice breakfast place. The view from the indoor dining area was lovely, especially at dawn and in the evening.

Only two minor issues: first, we found old coffee in the coffee maker when we arrived, and second, the hot water had been turned off, which led to a surprising cold shower on the second day! We didn't notice at first because of residual heat in the tank.

Overall, the house helped us have the quality time together that we cherish when we can get together only 2 or 3 times a year.

Many Thanks!

Rose & David

Owner's Response: Hi Rose, We are glad you and your family enjoyed your stay at Hale Mauka, and thank you very much for your review. We apologize for the coffee maker grinds and the water heater issue -- we have followed up with our cleaning crew and property manager to ensure that neither occurs again. Fortunately, both were minor issues and we are glad they did not unduly affect your stay. We look forward to having you return to Hale Mauka to make more wonderful memories with your family and friends. Best Regards.

As described: comfortable, cozy, well located

  • 5 of 5

The most important thing to me with any rental, is that it be as described - Hale Mauka was just that. It was very comfortable for our family of four and had everything we needed whether it be just relaxing, playing Battle Ship or eating in. The location was perfect - especially for a semi-novice ski family like ours that focuses on the Tahoe Donner area. Importantly, the owners also did a great job of providing information in advance as to how to best manage the house and on things to do in the area and were also very quick to respond to messages/questions, which is always a HUGE plus.

The only downside was that while warned that there may be some work being done on the house next door, our first morning there it started at 6:30 am which was too bad as we were trying to get some good rest in before the start of a big day. This is not the owners fault, and at some point it of course will end, but again it was a bummer for our first morning there to be woken up so early.

In the end though, we really enjoyed it and will likely look to return.

Owner's Response: Hi Stephen, We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at Hale Mauka, and thank you for your review. We and all our guests have been eagerly awaiting the completion of the house construction next door. We are pleased to announce that as of early May 2016, the work on the house next door is complete! Guests of Hale Mauka can once again look forward to the peace and quiet afforded by a cabin in the woods. We look forward to having you return, be it for a summer visit or next winter for more snow activities. Best Regards.

Great - perfect for our large combined family

  • 4 of 5

Hello Ed - No complaints - knew what we were getting as we stayed here a year ago and loved it. Two things we did not like, but both are out of your hands for the most part. It was disappointing to find that construction was in progress next door and that the workers showed up at 7am. They did not make any serious noise until later in the day, but the peace and quiet was not piece and quiet when they are constructing a house.

Secondly we were very disappointed to find that the benefits of using the guest cards for downhill skiing and cross country skiing have effectively been eliminated. This is on me as I should have looked at the Tahoe Donner website before we booked the trip, but it literally was unaffordable for 7 of us to downhill ski, as there was effectively no discount given, while last year there was. The same with cross country skiing. It seems that Tahoe Donner is trying to catch up with the other resorts now that they make their own snow, so this was really disappointing to not go downhill.

Otherwise we love the place - it suits us just fine thank you.

Owner's Response: Hi Ronald, We are glad you enjoyed Hale Mauka on your return visit, and thank you for your review. As you noted, the issues that displeased you were unfortunately both out of our control. The house under construction next door is perhaps half way complete on the exterior at this time. The Tahoe Donner Association allows construction hours between 7am and 7pm on weekdays, so it's likely the construction crew was making the most of the available time between winter storms. While they attempted to leave noisier activities for later in the day, we are sorry that their arrival disturbed the typical peace and quiet of the area. The Tahoe Donner Guest cards allow access to all Tahoe Donner amenities, though only some amenities yield a discounted price. While snowplay offers a discount to TD guests, neither skiing venue does. During peak times, the skiing venues are open only to TD members and guests, so while there may be no discounts, you are assured of being able to ski there. We are sorry that you were surprised by the expense of the skiing facilities, but as you noted, the rates are not in our control. While the lift tickets are less expensive at TD than other neighboring resorts, we understand your disappointment in the lack of discounts for guests. The good news is that the house next door will be completed someday (hopefully soon), so construction noise will no longer be an issue. We do not know the price for the Tahoe Donner ski resorts in future seasons, but you can always compare the rates on the Tahoe Donner web site against neighboring resorts to determine the cost in advance. Best Regards.

Just what we were looking for.

The house was cozy, clean and the right size for our two families. The kids enjoyed the snow in the backyard. The level driveway was a big plus, as well as the short drive to Tahoe Donner ski hill. The price is right too! The owners were quick to respond and offered early check-in.
