Overview

About the property

Oceanfront 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom

We are renting our Ohana (i.e. guesthouse). It is attached to our home, but doesn't have any shared walls. It is separated from our home by a breezeway and lanai. It has a private entrance and covered parking. The Ohana is approximately 1000 square feet which includes: 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, living/dining space and kitchenette, but the best part is the view!

The property is conveniently located with a private driveway and gate directly off Hawaii Belt Road (Highway 19). The home is surrounded by 3 acres of tropical flora with no other home in sight. Extremely private, yet easy to find and located 13 miles from historic downtown Hilo and 15 miles from the Hilo Airport.

About Sandy & Bob Nutt

We are originally from California, but have always had a love for Hawaii. I spent childhood vacations visiting my grandfather in Maui and we've been coming to the Big Island to visit my father since he retired here in 2000. My husband and I are both serving in the US Navy.

Sandy & Bob Nutt purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Sandy & Bob Nutt chose Hilo District

For us, it was all about the view. We love waking up to beautiful sunrises over the water and seeing waves crash along the rugged coastline. We hope you will come stay and fall in love with it like we have!

What makes this cottage unique

Our managers, Sandy & Bob are very attentive if you need anything during your stay.

A total dream come true!!

  • 5 of 5

This location is by far the best VRBO we have ever experienced!! We loved this private property. It is everything we expected and more! Very clean property with loads of special touches. It is private and away from all signs of humanity. The views are truly gorgeous! Watched the sunrise every morning from the private patio.

The night sky was just as wonderful. Photography buffs will LOVE this location! There is the view of the cliffs with the water crashing into the shore. The palm trees make a great addition to the sunrise photos. And the night sky offers up the Milky Way in its full glory!! No light pollution from this location!! There is even a small waterfall to capture digitally.

The home is very tastefully decorated. It is impeccably clean! It is all of the little touches that make it a remarkable location. We have stayed at many VRBO locations over the years. I can honestly say this one is my favorite. I could not believe they supplied sunscreen, mosquito spray (zero bites and no spray used ever!!) shampoo and conditioner, laundry soap, movies for the dvr, and two ukuleles!! I taught myself how to play while watching the sun come up!! Very thoughtfully equipped kitchen as well.

There is plenty to do a short distance away. Plenty of cute restaurants and shopping available in Hilo. The hour drive to the volcanoes is beautiful. The national park is spectacular. A little advice, watch the lava from the steam pot area to avoid the crazy people at Jaggar location. Plenty of great hiking areas at the park.

If we ever return to the Big Island, we will definitely stay here again! It was better than we imagined!!

Owner's Response: Mahalo nui loa for your lovely remarks. We want our guests to experience Hawaii in all it's natural splendor whether they are inside the cottage or outside with the breeze blowing. The birds were probably singing along and enjoying your ukulele music as well. Having it clean and supplied ensures that our guests don't need to get some of the essentials. We would love to see your photos and all the beauty that you have captured of this lovely island. We look forward to your return someday, it was a pleasure to meet the two of you. Aloha and Mahalo

Super clean and private. Large grounds. Really we'll supplied. Nice that things like sunscreen and shave cream left behind by previous guests. Just a wonderful place to wake up to the sunrise. And again... what a view!!!!our favorite place so far of many VRBOs

Owner's Response: Wow that's quite an honor to be your favorite VRBO stay, mahalo nui loa. We do our best to have you feel at home and to have privacy. Early this morning you would have had a very close view of Venus which was really bright. The meteor shower last night was also quite spectacular as well. Maybe some day you might be able to come back and catch this night show. Mahalo and Aloha

One of the best vacation homes we have stayed at.

  • 5 of 5

Very clean and well kept. Nicely isolated. We loved the sound of the surf against the cliff face right below us. The trip highlights included sitting on the lawn with coffee and watching the sun rise every morning. Sandy Nutt, the manager of the property could not of been more responsive and pleasant.

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to have met you and hear how much you were enjoying the property. Watching the sun rise with the sounds of the ocean and birds singing is surely a great way to start your day. Aloha and Mahalo for being our guests.

Slice of paradise

  • 5 of 5

The beachfront house is really a slice of paradise. The house is very comfortable and roomy. It is in a great location, not too far from Hilo, but far enough away to give you all the privacy you want. The property is well maintain and has beautiful landscaping. If you are going to do the Umauma zipline it is right up the road less than 2 miles away. We even got brief glimpses of a whale not far off shore. I would highly recommend this property for anyone wanting to visit the Hilo side of the big island. Mahalo Bob and Sandy, we really enjoyed staying at the property.

Owner's Response: With the house sitting high on the cliff, it certainly does make for some great views. We too enjoy watching for whales in the winter season, it just never gets old. There are 3 zipline companies near by, Segway tours and the World Botanical Gardens all within minutes of the cottage, so lots of fun to have. We do hope that you get to come back again sometime. Aloha and Mahalo

Owner's Response: It was our pleasure to host the two of you. The ocean view always seems to capture our attention with it's changing colors, sunrises, moon reflections, ocean life and passing ships, it's better than Netflix to watch. lol The Big Island is such a special place to explore, so we're glad you experienced many things it has to offer. Thank you so much for the lovely chocolates you gave us and sharing a bit of where you live. We look forward to having you both again some time in the future. Mahalo and Aloha

I reviewed some of our favorite local attractions on gogobot so you can check those out and you can see what other people are saying about them. Locally, I think the little town of Honomu, and Akaka falls are must sees (located approximately 2 miles from our house). If you want to do something adventurous try ziplining (we recommend Skyline Akaka Falls - also located in Honomu). Downtown Hilo is 13 miles away and has plenty of restaurants, grocery stores, museums, and other outdoor activities. The nearest airport is 15 miles away, also in Hilo.
