Hakalau Bungalow Rental Photos and Description

Oceanfront 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom

We are renting our Ohana (i.e. guesthouse). The unit is attached to our home, but is very private and doesn't have any shared walls. It is separated from our home by a breezeway and large Lanai. It comes with it's own private entrance and covered parking. The Ohana is 1000 square feet which includes: 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, living/dining space and kitchenette. See photographs for interior details.

Our Ohana boasts an open floor plan with ocean views from the living and dining space, the kitchenette and the bedroom. It has bamboo and tile flooring throughout and granite countertops. The unit has the basics for preparing simple meals, including an outdoor gas grill. We provide free Wi-Fi and streaming Netflix for your enjoyment.

The property is conveniently located with a private driveway and gate directly off Hawaii Belt Road (Highway 19). The home is surrounded by 3 acres of tropical flora, including fruit trees, palm trees and fishpond with no other home in sight. Extremely private, yet easy to find and located 13 miles from historic downtown Hilo and 15 miles from the Hilo Airport.

Come visit and enjoy the view!

About Sandy & Bob Nutt

We are originally from California, but have always had a love for Hawaii. I spent childhood vacations visiting my grandfather in Maui and we've been coming to the Big Island to visit my father since he retired here in 2000. My husband and I are both serving in the US Navy.

Sandy & Bob Nutt purchased this bungalow in 2012

Why Sandy & Bob Nutt chose Hilo District

For us, it was all about the view. We love waking up to beautiful sunrises over the water and seeing waves crash along the rugged coastline. We hope you will come stay and fall in love with it like we have!

What makes this bungalow unique

Our managers, Sandy & Bob are very attentive and live about a mile away if you need anything during your stay.

Great view and sound of the ocean.

  • 4 of 5

Very relaxing experience, in a clean and well maintained property with the ocean pounding below. The interior design is also nice. Quite an isolated area so one needs to plan in advance wether to go out or have diner at the house as the next restaurant is miles away. Only two minor drawbacks: the mainroad which is sometimes too close and the traffic can be heard in the early morning. Then the bed could be bigger in such a spacious house. All the rest is just perfect. Also one last important point to mention : the wifi works perfectly however there is no cellular coverage at the house, one has to move down the road to catch the network.

The property is clean, private and has a beautiful view.

  • 4 of 5

We loved the location and the history of the property. The cottage itself was our home away from home. Everything one would need is there. The only downside is the lock on the gate, it needs to be replaced :-)

Owner's Response: This area does have a lot of history. The railroad used to run along this coast and the foundation of the railroad station is located on the property. The photos in the cottage along with some books take you deeper with the culture and happenings of times past. We have replaced the gate lock since it was giving you a hard time, sorry for any inconvenience. We wish you would have told us of this problem during your stay so we could have fixed it for you earlier to have made your experience here more pleasant.

Beautiful and Peaceful Stay

  • 5 of 5

We greatly enjoyed our stay at the Oceanfront Cliff House, a very clean and tidy place. It was peaceful falling asleep to the sounds of nature, and waking up to the sunrise above the pacific ocean, shining through the entire house! If you are looking for a romantic getaway with breath taking views, I highly recommend this one. It was about a 20 minute drive to the main town of Hilo and an hour to the Volcano National Park. We wish we had more time to BBQ in the backyard or just spend more time at the house, but we packed our trip with activities so we weren't able to relax and enjoy the view from this home as much as we had hoped. Thanks again, Sandy and Bob, for sharing your wonderful home with vacationers like us :)

Owner's Response: We are so glad that you enjoyed the cottage and all it's beautiful sights and sounds. There is so much to do and see on this amazing island, that it is hard to find time to just relax, so I guess you will have to come back and try again. haha Please come back anytime and maybe you will have time to grill some Ahi. Aloha and Mahalo

Beautiful Cliff view!

  • 5 of 5

Oceanfront Cliff House was a really unique place! Beautiful view and really nice landscaped property. The inside space is tropically decorated, really loved the bamboo furniture. The space also allows you to open vent slats throughout the house so the breeze can come through. They provided anything you would need to enjoy the ocean (boogie boards, flippers, snorkeling gear, beach towels) and the gravity lawn chairs were fun and relaxing. Lastly, the Coqui frogs sing you to sleep. I wished we could have stayed longer than one day. It is a real gem and the owners are very nice and super communicative!

Owner's Response: We're glad you got to enjoy some of the natural beauty of Hawaii right here on the property. With the sights and sounds of the ocean, tropical plants, and fruit, you know you are in paradise. Please come back when you can stay longer, we would enjoy that.

AMAZING VIEWS, SECLUDED, QUIET

  • 5 of 5

I wish we had booked our whole stay on the Big Island here! The view is unbeatable, it is LITERALLY on a cliff overlooking the ocean, the view in the morning was so beautiful and you could see it the great room and the bed room.

You feel as though you are completely isolated, you can't see any neighbors, you're surrounded by forest and the ocean. The fence and gate keep the insulated from the road traffic.

It seemed to be peak coqui frog when we were there, so that's really all we heard :) but the view made up for it.

The interior was comfy and spacious, and well stocked.

The property was relatively easy to find considering it was pouring rain when we arrived (perhaps the owners have replaced the gate lock since we were there, it was very tricky to open and close).

Owner's Response: The gate lock has been changed, that one was too challenging to use. As they say here, it's mor betta. haha Enjoying the ocean view and night sky from bed or the great room is always a special treat for our guests so we're glad you enjoyed it as well. Please come back and stay longer on your next trip to this lovely island. Aloha and Mahalo

I reviewed some of our favorite local attractions on gogobot so you can check those out and you can see what other people are saying about them. Locally, I think Kolekole Beach Park, the little town of Honomu, and Akaka falls are must sees (and all located in or on the way to Honomu, 2 miles from our house). If you want to do something adventurous try ziplining (we recommend Skyline Akaka Falls - also located in Honomu). Downtown Hilo is 13 miles away and has just about everything you'll need in the way of restaurants, grocery stores, museums, and other outdoor activities. The nearest airport is 15 miles away, also in Hilo.
