Oceanfront 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom
Welcome to the Ocean Front Cliff House our Ohana (i.e. guesthouse). The cottage is attached to our lanai, but doesn't have any shared walls. It is separated from our home by a breezeway and lanai. It has a private entrance and covered parking. The Ohana is approximately 1000 square feet which includes: 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, living/dining space and kitchenette, but the best part is the view!
The property is conveniently located with a private driveway and gate directly off Hawaii Belt Road (Highway 19). The home is surrounded by 3 acres of tropical flora with no other home in sight. Extremely private, yet easy to find and located 13 miles from historic downtown Hilo and 15 miles from the Hilo Airport.

About Sandy & Bob Nutt
We are originally from California, but have always had a love for Hawaii. I spent childhood vacations visiting my grandfather in Maui and we've been coming to the Big Island to visit my father since he retired here in 2000. My husband and I are both serving in the US Navy.
Sandy & Bob Nutt purchased this Cottage in 2012
Why Sandy & Bob Nutt chose Hakalau
For us, it was all about the view. We love waking up to beautiful sunrises over the water and seeing waves crash along the rugged coastline. We hope you will come stay and fall in love with it like we have!
What makes this Cottage unique
Our managers, Sandy & Bob are very attentive if you need anything during your stay.

Great Place in Paradise
We spent three nights at the Cliff House during the last week in September 2017. We have been to Hawaii many times, and stayed in great places, but the Cliff House tops them all. The location is perfect, high on a cliff overlooking the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by lush green vegetation. The house itself is modern, spacious, with all of the amenities you may want, located on a large lot, away from neighbors. There is no light pollution, so the night sky is spectacular. We loved our stay!

You are so right about the amazing night sky. With zero to low light pollution, the visibility is incredible especially to watch meteor showers, just spectacular. We too kept coming back to Hawaii until we moved here. We do hope you get to come back again to enjoy our beautiful ocean views and stroll once more through the property. Aloha and A Hui Hoa (until we meet again)
Stunning Tropical Property Overlooking Crashing Waves
The Cliff House Ohana was beautifully appointed and very comfortable. We were there during a period of high surf and the sounds of the dramatic waves crashing below washed over us for a wonderfully relaxing time. I'm sure that even without the high surf it would have sounded wonderful. At night there was also a chorus of frogs and crickets. The extensive grounds were beautifully groomed with all kinds of tropical fruit and flowering plants - a little creek with waterfall bordered the property. The property is far enough from Hilo so as to not be affected by the hustle, but close enough for shopping and meals out, as well as being quite close to scenic parks, waterfalls and small towns. It was a wonderful stay - I recommend it highly!
We were glad to host you both as you celebrated your 45th anniversary and retirement. Right now there is one of the avocado trees that is fruiting and sometime soon the lemons will start to blossom which are always tasty. You are right about it's nice to be a short drive away from Hilo, about 15 minutes, to go out to eat if you desire but having the parks and falls close by. We hope to see you again for your 50th anniversary. Aloha and Mahalo
The Cliff House far exceeded our expectations! It was so private and secluded. It was so us!
It is a beautiful home on 2 1/2 acres of pure bliss. You have your own waterfall, right on the edge of of cliff with sound of the crashing waves. It has a large covered lanai we enjoyed every morning drinking coffee. Also great for barbecuing and even saw whales from the lanai! The property is gated so very private and secure. It is a ways out of town but is also close to many attractions. We felt like we were sleeping in a rain forest but right on the ocean with the frogs and the waves! Can't say enough about this house! Sandy and Bob Nutt, the managers of the property, we're so great to work with and so personable. Would highly recommend! We spent 2 weeks here and really enjoyed the island. Lots to do! Don't hesitate, just go!
Knowing that you truly enjoyed your stay and the property gives us great joy. We always want our guests to feel this is their own private peace of paradise on the island. The covered lanai is perfect for enjoying a barbecue or just relaxing with a good book or coffee while watching for ships and whales. It was a sincere pleasure to have you as our guests, a hui hoa (until we meet again) Aloha and Mahalo
This place was great. Perfect spot to explore the island.
We're so glad you enjoyed your stay at The Ocean Front Cliff House. The cottage is centrally located between Waipio Valley and Volcano National Park which makes it a good home base to come back to and relax. Mahalo for being our guests, Aloha
Private house and well appointed.
We're glad you enjoyed the privacy that the property and cottage offer. Mahalo for sharing with us as to why you only gave us 4 stars, which was due to the rain. We know that rain can change activity plans but it also keeps everything lush and green along with making the waterfalls magnificent. We hope you both enjoyed celebrating your birthdays on the island. Aloha and Mahalo
Our Second Stay at the Cliff House
We were thrilled to return to the Big Island and the Cliff House after several years. We rose each morning between 5am and 6am to see the sunrise over the water. What an amazing way to start each day. And it is the perfect spot for yoga and meditation!
At night we looked up at the stars...and enjoyed the roar of the water and sounds of the coquis.
We enjoyed many special treats on the Hilo side...the farmers market with delicious rampertab, passion fruit and papaya...a delicious meal at Moon & Turtle...an afternoon at the Tropical Botanical Garden..and walk around Akaka Falls.
We also journeyed to the Kona side with stops at Hapuna Beach...Holualoa to see art and friends and more.
Such a delight to enjoy the beauty of the Cliff House. Thank you Sandy and Bob!
It was a pleasure to have you back and to see that you had such an amazing time again. We too get up early for the same reason, you must be turning into a local, haha. It seems like no matter how many times you come to the island, there is always more to discover or do over again. We hope to see again in the future. Aloha and Mahalo
I reviewed some of our favorite local attractions on gogobot so you can check those out and you can see what other people are saying about them. Locally, I think the little town of Honomu, and Akaka falls are must sees (located approximately 2 miles from our house). If you want to do something adventurous try ziplining (we recommend Skyline Akaka Falls - also located in Honomu). Downtown Hilo is 13 miles away and has plenty of restaurants, grocery stores, museums, and other outdoor activities. The nearest airport is 15 miles away, also in Hilo.
