Ocean Front Cliff House

Bedrooms 1
Space 1,000 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 1 - 4 nights

About the property

Oceanfront 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom

We are renting our Ohana (i.e. guesthouse). It is attached to our home, but doesn't have any shared walls. It is separated from our home by a breezeway and lanai. It has a private entrance and covered parking. The Ohana is approximately 1000 square feet which includes: 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, living/dining space and kitchenette, but the best part is the view!

The property is conveniently located with a private driveway and gate directly off Hawaii Belt Road (Highway 19). The home is surrounded by 3 acres of tropical flora with no other home in sight. Extremely private, yet easy to find and located 13 miles from historic downtown Hilo and 15 miles from the Hilo Airport.

About Sandy & Bob Nutt

We are originally from California, but have always had a love for Hawaii. I spent childhood vacations visiting my grandfather in Maui and we've been coming to the Big Island to visit my father since he retired here in 2000. My husband and I are both serving in the US Navy.

Sandy & Bob Nutt purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Sandy & Bob Nutt chose Hakalau

For us, it was all about the view. We love waking up to beautiful sunrises over the water and seeing waves crash along the rugged coastline. We hope you will come stay and fall in love with it like we have!

What makes this cottage unique

Our managers, Sandy & Bob are very attentive if you need anything during your stay.

Great Place in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We spent three nights at the Cliff House during the last week in September 2017. We have been to Hawaii many times, and stayed in great places, but the Cliff House tops them all. The location is perfect, high on a cliff overlooking the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by lush green vegetation. The house itself is modern, spacious, with all of the amenities you may want, located on a large lot, away from neighbors. There is no light pollution, so the night sky is spectacular. We loved our stay!

Owner's Response: You are so right about the amazing night sky. With zero to low light pollution, the visibility is incredible especially to watch meteor showers, just spectacular. We too kept coming back to Hawaii until we moved here. We do hope you get to come back again to enjoy our beautiful ocean views and stroll once more through the property. Aloha and A Hui Hoa (until we meet again)

Great location to explore the east coast of Big Island

  • 4 of 5

The home is perfect for two and well situated to explore the east coast. Conveniently located off the highway, which makes it easy to get around quickly. Only 20 mins from Hilo. Morning views of the ocean are stunning and loved the sounds of the waves crashing against the rocks below.

Basic but roomy 1 bed/1 bath. Netflix account provided, as well as flashlights, binoculars and cooler bag (plus other extras). Nice lanai with comfy chairs. Great cross breeze in the evening.

If you're a light sleeper bring ear plugs because there are many coqui frogs and the house is located next to the highway.

The house can get very hot, and could use some blinds or shutters to keep it cool during the day. And there is no light at front gate, so it's easy to drive by it at night.

But these are minor and worth overlooking for the views & location.

Owner's Response: Seeing the sunrise in the morning and enjoying the view gives you a great way to start your day. Usually the sounds of the waves muffle the songs of the coqui frogs which live in the rain forest. Glad you used the coolers and binoculars, hopefully you also got to use the snorkel gear as well to see some of the beautiful tropical fish here in our waters. We have solar lights out by the gate to help locate the property since there are very few street lights due to the light pollution that affect the Mauna Kea Observatories. We will look into adding some curtains in the living room to help block the sun, but unfortunately they will block the ocean view. Aloha and Mahalo

The Cliff House is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a spectacular view of the Hilo Coast. We could not get enough of the view. We enjoyed beautiful sunsets, a full moon, and very pretty sunrise. It was everything as advertised in the listing. If we ever return to the Hilo area, we will be sure to stay at the Cliff House!.

Owner's Response: We would be delighted to have you come back anytime. We are always in awe of the beauty the full moon makes as it reflects on the ocean. So glad you both got to see and experience this as photos just don't seem to be able to capture this amazing sight. Mahalo and Aloha

Owner's Response: Love your review about wanting to stay forever. We kept saying the same thing until we did, so maybe someday you will be able too as well. In the meantime you can just keep coming back to paradise and enjoying the cottage, property, views and this beautiful island. A hui hoa (until we meet again)

I reviewed some of our favorite local attractions on gogobot so you can check those out and you can see what other people are saying about them. Locally, I think the little town of Honomu, and Akaka falls are must sees (located approximately 2 miles from our house). If you want to do something adventurous try ziplining (we recommend Skyline Akaka Falls - also located in Honomu). Downtown Hilo is 13 miles away and has plenty of restaurants, grocery stores, museums, and other outdoor activities. The nearest airport is 15 miles away, also in Hilo.
