About Greg

Grew up on Skegemog Lake with parent's cottage. Probably my best memories of both my child and adulthood. Thus, I understand what it takes to make a vacation memorable.

Greg purchased this house in 2013

Why Greg chose Northern Michigan

Bernie's Place is smack dab in the middle of the Chain-O-Lakes, whether you're content to be right where you are with swimming, fishing, waterskiing, kayaking, etc.; or want to visit Torch Lake sandbar, or take a boat ride to Elk Rapids, this property has you right in the center of it all!

What makes this house unique

Attached to all Chain-O-Lakes lakes and activities. Few hundred yards away from nature trial, boat launch, and marinas. 2 bass fishing holes are located right in front of the property. If you GoogleEarth this address, you can see the fishing holes right out front. Further, up until these fishing spots, is a waist deep sandbar. Perfect for keeping a close eye on the kids, or playing Frisbee and other water activities.

Guestbook comments from the owner

As someone who has rented properties most of their adult life, this family was simply outstanding. They were kind, courteous, and fun. Left the place immaculate. It felt like we made new friends by the time they left. Looking forward to seeing them again and again. :)

Awesome stay

  • 5 of 5

We have been vacationing on the Chain of Lakes for 40 years and this was one of our most memorable. The accommodations and service provided by Greg and Bernie were exceptional. The unbelievable part of our stay was the storm, with 100+ mph winds, that went through on our second day. Trees and power lines were downed all around us including two that hit the cottage and caused some external but no internal damage. Amazingly, Greg had a back up generator and we were fortunate to be able to power up most of the cottage. The road was blocked by both the power lines and trees and our only means of travel was by boat. Greg came by early the next morning on his boat and then took me into town to stock up on groceries and also gas to run the generator. After two full days the roads were cleared and we could finally get out by car. Through the whole process Greg and Bernie went out of their way to ensure that we were provided for in every way imaginable. I can't say enough of what they did for us during this somewhat crisis situation. The cottage was very clean and worked out great, sleeping a family of 8 of us very comfortably. The kitchen had all the amenities and we were able to create fabulous meals in a perfect setting. We loved the location as it was easy access to both Torch and Elk Lakes. The mooring worked well as our 4500 lb boat survived the 100 mph winds and escaped unscathed. Loved the sunset dinners on the deck with a fire going. Would recommend this cottage to anyone and am just so appreciative of all the work Greg and Bernie did to make our stay a memorable one!

Owner's Response: My thanks to one of the most outstanding families we have ever had the privilege of knowing. The day after the storm, they had chainsaws, axes, and saws in the yard, and began clean up! What character. They never complained about the situation, and only asked how they could help. Absolutely feel blessed to have met them and call them friends. 5 STARS!!!

Terrific Family Time!

  • 5 of 5

After spending 20+ years on either East or West Grand Traverse Bay, we decided to try something new and rent a house on the chain. We were lucky enough to come across this property and it was a wonderful week. The owner met us and walked us through everything making us feel immediately at home. The boat mooring worked well, the swimming area was excellent, the fire pit and overall accommodations were terrific.

Unlike many rentals where you have to practically pack up your whole house to bring with you, this rental had everything minus our food. All linens and kitchen accessories (including spices) were provided. I’ve yet to see another rental owner so committed to a nice relaxing rental experience.

The owner even welcomed my wife and I with a bottle of wine and toys and snacks for the kids!

It was a great experience filled with many memories that we will cherish for years to come.

Bernie and Greg have created a little oasis and are welcoming hosts. They left a gift for both my husband and I and our boys upon our arrival. Their cottage has a very well stocked kitchen (love the cupboard lights, made things easier to find) beautiful appliances, and a very comfortable kitchen to cook in. The beds are very comfortable (I never understand crappy cottage beds when you are up north, that's when you want to sleep and feel your best and Greg and Bernie obviously get that). The sheets too were awesome! The updated bathrooms were a nice size and clean. We loved the fire pit and dock. Unfortunately we did not get to utilize all that the cottage and surrounding area had to offer because our youngest was sick day 1 of vacation However the game room with movies, games, comic books made my little guys stay very comfortable. We were able to go up the river and explore with a rented boat, highly suggested. The river is awesome and all the lakes are exceptional. The owners pay special attention to small details. Oh and the laundry/storage area was so nice to have. Thank you Greg and Bernie for a beautiful week!

Greg and Bernie have created a little up north oasis. Their cottage is so quiet and peaceful. Upon arrival they had a gift of for both my hubby and I and our kids. They have a well stocked kitchen, the beds and sheets are super comfortable, enough room to spread out so kids can have their own small space and we had ours. We did not get to use the cottage or the outside like we expected to because our 8 year old was sick right off the bat, but we are hoping to be back for two weeks next year to enjoy the area. Easy for bike riding, kayaking, swimming, boating. We have two active, ACTIVE boys and we need things to keep them busy. This is a great place to do it. Exploring the river via boat was awesome. Greg and Bernie paid attention to the details and details just make a vacation that much more wonderful. And too boot they were easy people to work with. So accommodating. Thank you both!!

2014 Vacation, One to Remember

  • 5 of 5

What a fantastic place to vacation, on or off the water. Our hosts Bernadine and Greg welcomed us back into their very clean and very well maintained vacation home. We were once again very comfortable with our stay, a home away from home experience.

We were blown away by the amazing views from the water’s edge especially mornings and evenings. The crystal clear waters sounding the home are unbelievable and regardless of the direction we chose to drive we were amazed by the beautiful landscape that surrounded the lakes in the area.

This vacation home is a great central location for us, far enough way form the busy streets of Traverse City but close enough to spend time there most every day shopping. This home is very close-by to one of our most favorite places in Michigan to visit, Elk Rapids. I was able access this wonderful small town by water, something that has been on my bucket list for many years.

My family and I thank you again for making our 2014 vacation a very memorable one……

On the plus side: Beautiful home on great lake. Beds and baths were very nice. Plenty of room to store our fishing gear in the laundry room. Easy parking for truck and boat trailer. On the down side: No dock! It was there on the shore but not assembled and in the water. Too many personal knick knacks around to get broken by kids. No room to store groceries. Space was taken by landlord items. Need larger and varied pots and pans.

Owner's Response: Mooring balls were discussed from the onset. Spent ~$500.00 to accommodate needs. All renters in their later years, so no need to child-proof for this visit. There were 5 empty shelves, refrigerator/freezer completely empty, and all available crackers, cereals, and soups offered up as extras. 36pcs of new Farberware, Pyrex, and teflon baking pans. Even left my personal waders for their use. Renters were clean, but too picky. Owner shouldn't be afraid to rent to them, but it won't be from me. Complained my towels weren't absorbent enough, and ridiculous things like that.
