About Greg

Grew up on Skegemog Lake with parent's cottage. Probably my best memories of both my child and adulthood. Thus, I understand what it takes to make a vacation memorable.

Greg purchased this house in 2013

Why Greg chose Northern Michigan

Bernie's Place is smack dab in the middle of the Chain-O-Lakes, whether you're content to be right where you are with swimming, fishing, waterskiing, kayaking, etc.; or want to visit Torch Lake sandbar, or take a boat ride to Elk Rapids, this property has you right in the center of it all!

What makes this house unique

Attached to all Chain-O-Lakes lakes and activities. Few hundred yards away from nature trial, boat launch, and marinas. 2 bass fishing holes are located right in front of the property. If you GoogleEarth this address, you can see the fishing holes right out front. Further, up until these fishing spots, is a waist deep sandbar. Perfect for keeping a close eye on the kids, or playing Frisbee and other water activities.

Guestbook comments from the owner

As someone who has rented properties most of their adult life, this family was simply outstanding. They were kind, courteous, and fun. Left the place immaculate. It felt like we made new friends by the time they left. Looking forward to seeing them again and again. :)

Fun Times on Lake Skegemog

  • 5 of 5

Sorry for the tardy review but we had a great time at Greg's beautiful home. We comfortably fit 6 adults for the week. The house was in great shape when we arrived and appreciated the extra touch with the bottle of wine. This is a great location for young kids with the sandy beach. The neighbors supplied great fishing tips! We rented a boat from American Boat Rentals. They delivered and picked up the boat right on Lake Skegemog. I would highly recommend them. Take a ride to Torch Lake ,you won't believe how blue and green the water is. Hope to come back to this area again and look forward to staying at this home.

Great family cottage vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time. Greg was very attentive to every need. If you have a boat bring it. There are 3 moorings. Plenty of dishes. Great pots and pans. Perfect location for a family cottage. We enjoyed campfires each night. Greg supplies the wood for the fires. Would definitely come back.

The location on the Lake is stunning!

  • 5 of 5

This was by far our families favorite vacation! We were amazed by the property location and views. The house is very well maintained and the kitchen is fully equipped with all the pans, dishes and items you will need. There was plenty of room for the entire family. We have 5 kids ranging from 8 through 14 and they enjoyed the water, the swimming dock and fires at night. Greg, the owner, was very responsive and helpful. He checked in with us and even helped us find a place to rent a boat and kayaks. The house is located on Lake Skegemog and provides access by boat to Torch Lake and Elk Lake. This was great since we could explore the area by boat and not be limited to a single area.

Thank you Greg for sharing your house, we had a wonderful experience!

An amazing place on a clean, quiet, secluded lake.

  • 5 of 5

We brought a pontoon boat and smaller open bow boat. Lake skegemog is not as blue in the photos but much smoother and quieter for tubing, skiing etc. Easy access to elk lake and a little float up the river to torch to take in some of that shockingly blue water and sand bar. We were a little worried about the mooring balls but they worked like a charm. The water was only about thigh deep walking out to the boats and a clean sandy bottom. The man made beach was awesome as was the swimming pier. Only complaints would be the charcoal grill was a bit small for us and I wish there were more/ bigger rugs at the back door. Overall an amazing vacation, great for kids, and the owner is very responsive/ accommodating. Many upgrades to the house since the photos were taken. If you want to get away from it all and relax this is the place!

Awesome stay

  • 5 of 5

We have been vacationing on the Chain of Lakes for 40 years and this was one of our most memorable. The accommodations and service provided by Greg and Bernie were exceptional. The unbelievable part of our stay was the storm, with 100+ mph winds, that went through on our second day. Trees and power lines were downed all around us including two that hit the cottage and caused some external but no internal damage. Amazingly, Greg had a back up generator and we were fortunate to be able to power up most of the cottage. The road was blocked by both the power lines and trees and our only means of travel was by boat. Greg came by early the next morning on his boat and then took me into town to stock up on groceries and also gas to run the generator. After two full days the roads were cleared and we could finally get out by car. Through the whole process Greg and Bernie went out of their way to ensure that we were provided for in every way imaginable. I can't say enough of what they did for us during this somewhat crisis situation. The cottage was very clean and worked out great, sleeping a family of 8 of us very comfortably. The kitchen had all the amenities and we were able to create fabulous meals in a perfect setting. We loved the location as it was easy access to both Torch and Elk Lakes. The mooring worked well as our 4500 lb boat survived the 100 mph winds and escaped unscathed. Loved the sunset dinners on the deck with a fire going. Would recommend this cottage to anyone and am just so appreciative of all the work Greg and Bernie did to make our stay a memorable one!

Owner's Response: My thanks to one of the most outstanding families we have ever had the privilege of knowing. The day after the storm, they had chainsaws, axes, and saws in the yard, and began clean up! What character. They never complained about the situation, and only asked how they could help. Absolutely feel blessed to have met them and call them friends. 5 STARS!!!

Terrific Family Time!

  • 5 of 5

After spending 20+ years on either East or West Grand Traverse Bay, we decided to try something new and rent a house on the chain. We were lucky enough to come across this property and it was a wonderful week. The owner met us and walked us through everything making us feel immediately at home. The boat mooring worked well, the swimming area was excellent, the fire pit and overall accommodations were terrific.

Unlike many rentals where you have to practically pack up your whole house to bring with you, this rental had everything minus our food. All linens and kitchen accessories (including spices) were provided. I’ve yet to see another rental owner so committed to a nice relaxing rental experience.

The owner even welcomed my wife and I with a bottle of wine and toys and snacks for the kids!

It was a great experience filled with many memories that we will cherish for years to come.
