We had a wonderful time with our grown kids and 2 grandbabies staying here. Four bedrooms were just what we needed to fit everyone. The bathroom situation is a bit strange (one bathroom connected to bedroom so you have to go through bedroom to get to it; the other, you have to go through the bathroom to get to the bedroom!) Fine for the people staying in that bedroom, but kind of awkward for those in a bedroom with no bathrooms, but we made it work.
We watched the meteor shower at night, sat around the fire pit, and just generally enjoyed each other's company. One day we headed to Rathbun Lake to the beach (about 35 minutes away) and had a great time there. Enjoyed the drive down and back through Amish country.
The cabin served us well as overflow for our family reunion attendees. It's about a mile further east than the location shown on the HomeAway site map, and on the opposite side of the gravel road, but still a convenient distance from Humeston. Attractions in Humeston include the Grass Roots Cafe (for lunch or scones and coffee in the morning) and Snyder's store, which includes everything from general store merchandise to a clothing boutique, an extensive array of kitchen ware, and so much more. There's also another restaurant plus a nice city park and free WiFi at the library, and a small grocery and a Casey's for whatever special needs arise.
The owner was easy to deal with and the home is clean, includes all the needed appliances and amenities, and is so spacious as to seem more of a "lodge" than a mere "cabin." It's perfectly suited for use as a hunting base or for family getaways where folks can enjoy the comfortable furniture or stargazing from the spacious deck.
We met some good friends at the Cline Country Cabin for a weekend. This was a good mid point for us. This cabin fit 8 of us perfectly. The cabin was clean and well maintained. The yard is big enough that we could put up a volleyball net and the kids could explore. The deck was very big and a nice place to sit and relax. The one problem we had was there was some type of bee nest under the deck so anytime we sat on it the bees came out and chased us away. We ended up sitting by the fire pit more. There is not a lot to do in the surrounding area, but if you are just looking to sit around and hang out/visit it is the perfect spot.
We rented the cabin for the weekend for a family wedding in the area. It worked out great for multiple families to stay in one spot.
Great cabin to enjoy country living, and get away from it all. It's been years since I saw stars shining so bright! The cabin was wonderful! We particularly enjoyed the spaciousness of the living area, kitchen, and eating area. Coffee and tea are provided, which was a plus for us...since we are coffee and tea drinkers. Three of the four bedrooms have queen size beds with the smallest bedroom having a twin trundle. Knowing ahead of time that there is a washer and dryer kept us from having to pack so much. Marilyn even provides washing detergent and fabric softener. The deck on the back was great for sitting out and enjoying the nice evenings and looking for shooting stars, as well as as enjoying our morning coffee. We stopped at a couple of fruit and vegetable stands while we were there to pick up fresh sweet corn, tomatoes, cantaloupe and watermelon so we were able to enjoy some good eating while we were there. What more can I say...great country cabin! Marilyn was great to answer any questions I had too!
The cabin and surrounding countryside were outstanding! A great place for our first family reunion with our adult children. The great room and kitchen are spacious and well appointed. The back porch was great for morning coffee and late night star gazing. Enough space out back for some waffle ball before settling in for an evening fire at the fire pit. We also enjoyed walking/running/roaming about on the local gravel roads. We were grateful for the directions from locals in town for the scenic short cut to Lake Rathbun, which saved us about 20 minutes off the google reccomendations. (Be sure to check the Humeston, Iowa business web sites for local information.) After spending the day at the lake, it was nice to have this quiet, private retreat to ourselves. Our host was courteous and quick to respond to questions and needs. We look forward to returning.
