Gorgeous two-level home features 5 bedrooms, 4 full bathrooms, a great-room encompassing a fully equipped kitchen, large dining area, and living area. Exterior includes a large deck overlooking the lake, accessible from the living area.
Two bedrooms with adjoining baths are located on the main level, each also with its own access to the inviting deck. Two bedrooms and a third bathroom are located on the lower level. In addition there are two twin beds and a twin roll-away in the common area of the lower level.
A detached bonus room with full bath offers an additional queen bedroom for a private stay from the rest of the house.
A 10-minute walk or a 1-minute drive gets you to a short path and boardwalk to the semi-private shoreline for great swimming in the sandy-bottomed crystal clear waters of Portage Lake.
For nature seekers, take a stroll through the natural trails of the wooded areas of this 8-acre property. Deer and foxes are a common sight. There is also a large open grassy field for any family sporting activities.
A 15-minute drive around Portage Lake takes you to Onekama and all it has to offer, including a city park with its own beach and playground. Great for family picnics.
An additional 10-minute drive around the lake from Onekama and you arrive at the beautiful, expansive public beaches of Lake Michigan.
We rented this house with another family that we have traveled with many other times. This was the nicest house we have ever rented together in our 13 years of traveling together. The views of Portage Lake were beautiful. The bird feeder was addicting. Since we have a bird feeder at home, my husband made sure they were always fed. We saw so many blue jays and woodpeckers. We actually saw a bald eagle flying by while we were all sitting on the deck.
As far as the house goes, it sleeps a lot of people and is pet friendly. Our two tweens had enough private space for themselves. I would have liked a little more lighting and a larger TV since it rained the first two days we were there. Since we have rented houses before, we knew what supplies to bring. Definitely bring a knife sharpener with you for this house. We saw deer and a fox. In the early morning the crows are really loud. This is definitely a house for anyone who wants to just relax, unwind and enjoy life. There were lots of board games provided. Grocery shopping is not far.
The only reason I did not give this house five stars is because of the lake access. There was no information provided as to how to get to the Portage Lake access. We found it 4 days after we arrived when we were driving to Miller Rd to see a wood working artist that was recommended to us. (His work is awesome, just be prepared to pay for real art.) We saw a last name on a weathered sign on the lake side that was the same as the last name of the house we were renting. If this was the lake access, it seemed as if we were in the backyard of someone. It certainly would not have been an easy walk with supplies, chairs and children. Definitely not what we were expecting. We opted to go to the beach in Onekama and Manistee.
We really enjoyed our stay. The home is beautiful. It was very adequate for sleeping many people with privacy. The two master suites on the main floor were very nice. There was plenty of space for parking since we had several audlt grandchildren. House is very well stocked as we cooked there most of the time. Beautiful home and property. Thank you for sharing with our family. We look forward to coming back next summer. We're very familiar with the area and there were lots of things to do such as music in the park, the beach and many other things.
We stayed here with two other families. House is laid out very nicely so the children could have their section downstairs and the adults could have privacy upstairs (and in the bonus space near garage). Portage Lake is beautiful and surprisingly quiet. Views from the deck are lovely and there is much privacy. The listing for the house is a bit misleading though. The path to Portage Lake is across the street and through someone else's side yard and leads to some bramble and marsh rather than a sandy beach. There is also no easy way to walk to Lake Michigan from the house if you plan to swim. It's an easy drive to lots of public beaches on Lake Michigan and the public beach in Onekama is quite nice (with an ice cream/sandwich shop right by). The house is a bit dated and can certainly use some lighting in the dining area. It's also quite a workout bringing the trash down the large hill to the street.
Situated North of historic Manistee; home of pristine Lake Michigan beaches, downtown shopping, river-walk & Little River Casino. Home is just south of the Village of Onekama offering antique stores, dining, parks and public access to Portage Lake and Lake Michigan.
