Welcome to Heritage House Ranch! This land has been in my family since 1912 and this home was built by my great grandfather in 1949. My wife and I recently bought the house and newly restored the home with all new furnishings, plumbing, and faucets. It truly combines the heritage and history of the property with all the amenities of today's modern homes. The master bedroom has a queen sized bed equipped flat screen TV. The bunk room as 2 bunk beds with new pillow top twin mattresses on each bed. There is also a flat screen TV in the bunk room. The large main bathroom is completely remodeled with new tub, shower, and toilet. It is also equipped with a large vanity area. The second bath is a half bath that also is the laundry room. The kitchen/ Dining area has also been restored with new flooring and large cabinet space fully stocked with all one would need to prepare any meal. One of the highlights of the property is the large deck built off the back door overlooking the 53 acres of rolling pasture.
My wife and I have 3 young wonderful children and reside in The Woodlands TX. We both grew up near Athens, TX and have wanted to have a home there to use for our family when we come back to visit our extended family. Our family has also long been vacation home tenants when we travel and have thought of investing into a vacation home of our own. This year, I had the opportunity to purchase my great grandfathers home I have been around since I was born which allowed both dreams to come true. With so much history and memories in this home, it is a very special place to us. We are hopeful you enjoy our Heritage House as much as we do.
Justin O'Neal purchased this chateau / country house in 1912
My great, great grandfather moved to this area in 1912 with his children and were full time farmers and cattle ranchers. When he passed, my great grandfather (whom had been involved in the family farm) remained and continue to run the farm. In the 1940's a tornado destroyed the original home, and in 1949 our home was built. It has continued to be passed down through the family until this year when I purchased the home from my father to reunite it with the remaining 'original' property I had already acquired. We then set out to restore the property back into 'like new' condition . Now, with our remodel complete, we are sure you will enjoy your stay with us.
With star filled nights, a constant breeze, and fresh country air and sounds, you would struggle to find a more serene place to stay. The deck we built off the back of the home is always in the shade and has a view all the way to the back of the 53 acre property. Sitting there on the back porch swing feeling the breeze and watching the cows is my favorite way to relax. You can also go through the gate and travel half way back to our spring fed pond and wet a hook if you care to try luck at fishing. (Catch and Release Please)
The home was a little closer to the road than we expected. But overall a very nice place to stay. The home was furnished beautifully. The back deck spacious and comfortable, overlooking a field of cattle. It was very very nice. The kitchen was fully stocked with dishware and utensils. We would definitely rent this home again if in the area. The owner was very nice and responsive to the questions I had.
My daughters and I enjoyed the house very much. It was an easy drive to First Monday in Canton. The large bathroom and dressing room area was perfect for getting ready with plenty of room. Unfortunately, we did not get to enjoy the beautiful grounds as much due to rainy weather, but early Sunday morning we were able to get out and the sounds of the birds singing and sun coming up was beautiful.
Also, Justin was very patient with this nervous grandmother whose GPS got me lost and we were in a tornado warning! He got me to the right place and we were in safe and sound.
I would recommend to this place to anyone wanting a quiet weekend in the country and/or a group wanting a good place to hang out and head to First Monday.
Our girls weekend in Canton was great. Everyone loved the house. It was very clean, beds were comfortable and only 30 minutes away from all the crowds. We will definitely be back.
My friend and I booked this property for our annual girls' getaway to Canton Trade Days. It was exactly what we were looking for. It was very clean, except for an infestation of crickets! They were everywhere outside, so coming inside was inevitable. We suspect the owners were aware and had treated the house as most were not alive. It was very comfortable with very cute decor. Two problems we found were: 1). It was hard to find, so be sure to arrive before dark! And 2) it had a very nice entertainment system with satellite. Very complicated! We managed to figure it out, but it wasn't easy. More detailed directions and instructions for the television would be helpful. Overall a successful trip!
The property was beautiful and better then expected. Very clean and well maintained. Nice texas furnishings throughout. A large back porch with a lovely tree right off the porch and beautiful pasture land. The front porch was also very nice and welcoming. Modern but made you feel so comfortable in the country with the beautiful cow pastures near by.
Once inside it was a real treat. Each room was filled with modern comfortable furniture. Flat screen TV's in the living and bedroom areas. A kitchen with all of the appliances, dishes, utensils, etc. that anyone would need. The cabinetry work throughout was beautiful and the bedding was so nice in the master that I would love to have it in my own home.
The owner was great to work with and answered all of our questions. He gave great suggestions on restaurants, grocery stores, etc. in the area. We took his suggestion and he was right on target. It was an easy drive to Canton for my group from here for shopping and great to be just far enough that we did not have to endure the crowds at the restaurant.
We plan to come back as often as possible to stay at this home away from home. Thanks!!
We stayed at the lovely home during a girls weekend. The home is Very clean, well decorated and large enough for 6 people. The only fall back is the 1 shower/bath. The house has 1 1/2 bathroom. The owners are very accommodating and nice. The back porch was a wonderful place for morning coffee and a perfect place for a relaxing glass of wine after a long day of shopping at trade days. It is as easy 30 min drive to Canton. We will definitely stay again. I highly recommend the rental.
There are many fun things to see and do near our property. Only a short drive to Canton is the world famous First Monday Trades Day (the worlds largest outdoor market) every first Monday weekend of the month. Also make sure to stop by the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. The center combines visitation and outdoor education with a production fish hatchery. Its mission is to provide an educational, entertaining visitor experience that promotes freshwater sport fishing and the enhancement, conservation and stewardship of aquatic resources in Texas. We also recommend planning a visit to Tara Vineyard and Winery near the property just outside of Athens. Here you can catch lunch or dinner or attend a wine tasting from Henderson County's oldest winery. Upon entering the grounds, you’ll notice the stately historic Murchison home, constructed in the 1880?s and relocated from downtown Athens and nestled amidst Tara’s vineyard. For the adventurous type, New York, TX Zip Line Adventures is also only a short drive from the property. There you will be on a guided adventure tour with 6 zip lines topped off with some of the most breathtaking 30-plus mile views of the East Texas Countryside. Your zip line adventure will take you soaring through towering pines, hardwoods and high above the rocky hillside of one of the highest elevations in East Texas. Finally, the East Texas Arboretum is also located close to the property in Athens as well. It is one of the nicest Arboretums you will ever see. With one hundred acres of wooded beauty, trees, flowers, and wildlife await your discovery at the East Texas Arboretum. The forest appears to come alive as you meander along two miles of woodland trails. Camouflaged frogs, insects, and even deer often scurry away as you pass. Make your way along winding, spring-fed streams connected by a 115-foot suspension bridge.
