This comfortable getaway is conveniently located to several mountain communities and outdoor recreation. Trout House is only 4 miles to Lake Glenville, 9 miles to Cashiers, 20 miles to Highlands and 20 miles to Sylva. The home is situated on a 2.5 acre lot in the Nantahala National Forest on Pilot Mountain. There are year round long range mountain views off the back deck and sounds of running water can be heard below.
The downstairs provides an open floor plan with the kitchen and breakfast bar opening up to the dining and living rooms. There are many large windows and a set of french doors that look out at the beautiful mountain views and Nantahala Forest. A stone wood burning fireplace is the focal point in the living and is complemented well by the beautiful surrounding pine walls. The entire home has hardwood floors that add to the home's mountain charm.
There are 3 bedrooms and 2 full baths. The master bedroom is situated on the main level and is furnished with a hickory style queen bed. The 2nd and 3rd bedrooms are located on the second floor. One bedroom is furnished with a hickory style queen bed and the third room with 2 sets of bunk beds, 1 bunked and 1 split as two singles.
The partially covered deck runs along the length of the house with plenty of seating and views of the mountains. There is also a covered carport that is perfect for extended outdoor entertaining and games and a fire pit that is accessible by trail a few yards from the home.
We live and work in Greensboro, NC. We enjoy outdoor recreation and have always enjoyed spending time in the mountains.
Gretchen Netherton purchased this house in 2013
We have spent many holidays and vacations in the Western Carolina Mountains. We fell in love with this home because of it's beautiful views, accessibility to outdoor recreation, and it's close proximity to the mountain communities of Cashiers and Highlands as well as Sylva, Dillsboro and Bryson City.
You can rest and relax with the peaceful mountain and forest surroundings or be entertained within a matter of minutes.
Beautiful location - close to LOTS of activities. We had a group of seven, and were very comfortable. Short drives to incredible water water rafting, hiking, etc. Would highly recommend this place. Beds were super comfy - linens were super nice. Kitchen was a good size, table comfortably fit all of us. Porch was a nice bonus and the fire pit was enjoyed by all. Cool enough at night with the box fans on - no need for A/C!
My family of 5 plus my parents very much enjoyed staying in the cabin for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The kitchen was well equipped and we were easily able to provide a Thanksgiving feast. The decor was lovely and the furniture very comfortable. The kids enjoyed the bunk beds. We all found the mattresses to be comfortable and the linens were very nice. We most enjoyed hikes through the woods, playing in a creek at the base of the mountain, making s'mores in the fire pit, and playing board and card games. The local Walmart was not too far away so we still were able to take advantage of the "Black Thursday" shopping. We drove into Highlands one day and visited a few of the waterfalls nearby. Overall, it was a great trip! I would recommend this cabin to any family and we hope to return soon.
Our little girl loved playing with the toys by the fireplace at night. Great daytime shopping, hiking or site seeing. Love the seclusion of the cabin but very convenient to daytime fun. We will rent this place again.
We stayed at Trout house in July for several nights. We had two families with 6 kids total and there was plenty of space!
The amenities were as noted in the listing. The kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, dishes, etc... The property was clean and appeared to be well maintained.
There were several welcome touches:
- step stools in the bathrooms and kitchens (great for the kids!)
- Toys and games! The TV stand in the living room was a wonderful surprise! Inside were blocks, Lincoln logs, crayons and coloring books, a playmobil dollhouse, hot wheels, etc... In addition, there was a cabinet of games for all ages!
- Books! There were kids books upstairs in the hallway, which the kids enjoyed.
- Ring on a String on the deck! We had no clue what the string with a ring on it was. We figured out this was an actual game and it kept the teens and adults entertained the whole trip!
The best part of the cabin was the back deck. It was covered and full of rocking chairs and wooden furniture. We spent most of our time out here enjoying the peaceful surroundings and amazing view! Surprisingly there were NO bugs back there! We didn't have to put on bug spray once, which was a pleasant surprise.
You can access the fire pit down a little trail beside the house. This was a fun activity and the little log chairs were great for the kids. I would recommend bag chairs for adults if you are planning on using the fire pit.
Gretchen was friendly and responded to all of our questions right away. The refrigerator didn't seem to get as cold as we are used to at home, but overall it kept things cold. The box fans in every room were useful, especially at night! Putting these in the windows kept a nice cool breeze in the rooms all night.
I would highly recommend the property, and would love to stay here again! If you are looking for a secluded, quiet location away from it all, but within driving distance to amenities - this place is perfect!
Slide Rock and Silver Falls were fun local attractions. We also had reservations for Arrowmont Stables - which we would highly recommend. Cashiers was a nice little town with a grocery store and other shopping.
One note - follow the directions carefully! The house itself is set back from the road and is initially hard to find.
We really enjoyed our stay at Trouthouse. The view was terrific. We had several bouts of rain and afterwards, the mist would rise between the mountains - beautiful. The cabin itself was very clean, well decorated and with very comfortable beds. It said, "You're in the mountains!"
We are from Florida and wanted to getaway from the heat.It was wonderful experience at the pilot home. Gretchen was prompt and ready to answer all questions. Mountain home is beautiful and well kept. We did not have any issues in finding the house.
Hiking and waterfalls are common attractions. Yellow Mountain, Whiteside Mountain and Bad Creek hiking trails are just over 15 miles from home. Cashiers Sliding Rock, Silver Run Falls and Whitewater Falls are also easily reached starting at 15 miles from the home. Cashiers, Highlands and Sylva are conveniently located for shopping and restaurants. Cashiers is a short 9 miles and Highlands and Sylva right at 20 miles. Lake Glenville is only 4 miles and offers boat access and rentals as well as a perfect spot for kayaking and canoeing. Fly fishing is also available with close proximity to the Tuckasegee River and its tributaries. Jackson County is home to the nation's first fly fishing trail.
