Overview

About the property

Spacious one bedroom, semi-detached house in Griffith Park, Hollywood, studios

Dillard’s Pool House is a spacious, semi-detached house in the heart of what was once Bette Davis' estate, Riverbottom. The salt water pool, hot tub, organic gardens, massive play area, bucolic atmosphere are on your doorstep. Close to Los Feliz, Hollywood, Silver Lake and Downtown LA. Biking distance to Disney, Warner Bros., Universal. Great hiking and horse riding trails just outside the back gate. A perfect 'stay-cation' for Angeleno's, home base for tourists, or working professionals.

You enter the estate through the original riverside gate of Bette Davis’ house Riverbottom. A patterned couch and outside sitting area looks out to a large and open lavender garden. The French Lavender maze billows before you and the flowing grasses feels like the dunes at the beach.

The charming sash windows of the LIVING ROOM and KITCHEN look out on the bright sandy garden, the hummocks and the foothills of Mount Hollywood (We are directly behind the HOLLYWOOD sign). The room is light and airy with tile floor. The couch folds out as a second bed if needed. Original art and Moroccan furniture and silver trays make it feel like a Moroccan den. It has with both digital cable (with HBO and Apple TV, making it perfect for relaxing after a long splash in the pool. The kitchen is small but serviceable with a dishwasher, stove, oven sink and such. There is WiFi throughout the estate.

The BEDROOM has a queen bed and a custom headboard perfect to tuck in to a juicy novel well into the night. The light from the Moroccan lamp patterns the walls. It has plenty of closet space and a desk to write letters home on. There is charming imported furniture dotted about.

The BATHROOM is huge. Large enough to entertain in while you lounge in the bathtub! There is a washing machine and a dryer, (although in Southern California the clothes dry just as fast on the rack as in the machine) the custom shower curtain adds a splash of playful pattern.

Dillard’s Pool House is next to the pool and hot tub in the heart of the estate. Named after one of Bette Davis’ favorite leading men; Preston Dillard played by Henry Fonda in the famous 1938 movie Jezebel. The unique and historical nature of Rivergate Estate make it a lovely oasis to stay in. Rivergate has a number of houses available to let that enjoy massive organic gardens with an abundance of butterflies and birds, saltwater pool and spa, fire pit, garden maze and olenanda secret garden. Lots of outdoor seating areas, art studio, fountain area, fruit trees… and Wi-Fi throughout.

We have a huge drought resistant organic garden. The far side is the yellow brick path, lined with billowing grasses, native plants, benches to read books on or sketch pictures. The garden path leads through the open air lounge area, past the hidden BBQ area, and toward the stables and O’Leary’s Cabin. We are often planting new things. Our photos are current and I update them as soon as we change things.

We are located just minutes from Hollywood, Los Feliz and the major studios: Warner Bros, NBC, CBS, Disney, Nickelodeon. And all the amenities of Griffith Park on your doorstep.

Rivergate House is the biggest and grandest at VRBO Listing #712356

Channing House VRBO Listing #479934

the whole estate at VRBO Listing #708660

O’Leary’s CabinVRBO Listing #465113.

It is not uncommon as the sun is setting that we all gather to play or chat in the garden. The shared nature of the grounds make Rivergate Estate a unique place and a little hard to describe, it feels a little like a village on a summer day.

About Amy B

I live part time on the estate with my two young children Winston and Vivienne. I am originally from London, England. I take my role as host very seriously and personally. I have won the Hero Award form another Holiday Rental site. We have a kind and hardworking team here and we do our very best to make sure that you have a great time.

Amy B purchased this house in 2012

Why Amy B chose Glendale

The NEIGHBORHOOD upscale and residential. Many of the large houses have private stables and it is common to see cowboys riding in the streets. We are just a few miles from Los Feliz, Silver Lake and Atwater (two exits on the freeway, about 5 minutes). We are bicycling distance from the studios (NBC, CBS, Warner Bros, Disney, Nickelodeon …). Additionally, there are four golf courses very near, as well as Travel Town, the LA Zoo, The Autry Museum, several horse riding facilities and playgrounds, Pickwick ice-skating and bowling and of course the wildlife and 52 miles of hiking and horse riding trails in Grffith Park.

Don’t let the rural setting and the hooting of the owls fool you, we are still in the heart of the city and you should be aware that you can sometimes hear the freeway, helicopters, dogs and sirens typical of city living. I mention it because it seems out of place while you lounge in the sun on the lawn feeling like you are out in the country.

What makes this house unique

There are great cycling trails and running tracks throughout the neighborhood and into the Park. Downtown Los Angeles is about 15 minutes away, depending a little on the infamous LA traffic (there is a shortcut through the park along Riverside Drive that is very pretty and cuts out some of the traffic).

Burbank and Glendale are home to loads of shopping including the Americana (a high end outdoor mall with fountain, fine restaurants and events). A Pavilions supermarket is one of the finest around and within walking distance.

Amy warmly welcomed us into her sweet haven in LA's horse country with provisions in our fridge and a loaf of home-baked bread to ease the transition of arriving late at night in a strange city...the pool house is cheerful and functional, the pool itself refreshing and the big green lawn with shade trees the perfect view from our patio. We loved the energy of young children and other guests with whom we shared this large property. Amy's concern for our comfort was reflected in her responding quickly to our questions and in filling our requests.

We feel very fortunate to have found this gem!

There is an oasis in LA. I found it.

  • 5 of 5

I am actually from LA, but was in town after moving away and not able to go home. So this means I know LA very very well and am very very opinionated and informed about LA in every way. In therms of location, setting, environment, amenities, and human company (including the incredibly nice host, Amy), this is the perfect find in LA. It is equal distance from everywhere (the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory over the hill, Universal Studios (which you should skip), the Burbank studios, Silver Lake and Los Feliz and its indy bookstores and cafes, running and hiking trails, and even the low hum of the 5 freeway which provides the perfect LA soundscape), but you may decide to just stay home for the chapparel-covered grounds, old horse stable, pool and attached hot tub, views of Griffith Park's Mt. Hollywood and Mt. Lee, and the typical Spanish-influenced LA-style art deco cottages with tile floors and white stucco walls.

We also have three kids, and this place was perfect for them (ages 7, 5, 3). I will come back... I think even if I move back home, which is a few miles away in Los Feliz, for period stay-cations in this wonderful compound. Not many places in LA have a full sky view and enough darkness to see all the stars... but this places does... and from a heated pool!

Oasis in LaLa Land

  • 4 of 5

The charming Dillard Pool House provided a perfect stop over location in our recent holiday trip to the LA area for a visit with our adult children and their young and growing families. Dillard is a simple, almost European, cottage with the loveliest draught resistant garden and pool right outside the front entry porch. We loved the fact that we had a separate living, basic kitchen space with a quiet bedroom off to the side. Having a bathroom with a washer dryer was quite helpful to freshen up our wardrobe. We had a bit of a bumpy landing, with minor issues that were addresses by our responsive host Amy. A little extra TLC could put this place over the top.We would definitely stay at Dillard again as it was such a calm and inviting spot that was convenient to our kids and grandkids in La Crescenta and Culver City.

Great relaxing weekend

We had a fun stay-cation weekend! One of the toilets required a minor repair and the owners arrived very promptly to fix it. We felt very well taken care of. Thanks!

Marvelous compound

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay in the year. This time at Dillards Pool House, a comfortable charming one bedroom house/cottage. Amy is a wonderful host -- the fresh flowers and fruit were much appreciated. The unit is fully equipped for a family to stay. The grounds are peaceful and pretty, and we enjoyed the pool as well. Highly recommend this VRBO!

pool house in Glendale

I absolutely loved this property. My two sisters and I shared three of the apartments on the compound and had an absolute blast with our families. Picking and consuming the delicious oranges, lemons and fragrant lavender on the property was was very cool. It was a perfect situation and a great value as well.
