PlayaZul is the place for those who want a great location close to the beach AND a fabulous, well-appointed house to come home to. Originally built in 1960 by a mill worker, the 'bones' of the house are solid, local redwood, which you can still see under the eaves of the lower story roof. A second story was added, and the entire house completely remodeled about 5 years ago, retaining all of the orignal charm while upgrading the ambiance with classic touches like hardwood floors, a travertine fireplace, two garden patios strategically located to maximize both morning and afternoon sun. You will find everything you need and more in a fully-appointed gourmet cook's kitchen with a double oven, stainless steel Bosch appliances, granite counter tops, solid maple cabinets, xtra-deep sink, filtered water system and more. Both bathrooms are fully remodeled with custom tile, recycled glass block, and Restoration Hardware details. The spacious upstairs family room has distant ocean views, flat screen TV, game table, lots of seating and a wood-burning pellet stove with a glass door so you can enjoy the fire in winter. The Master bedroom upstairs enjoys total privacy from the rest of the house. The two downstairs bedrooms open onto the back garden patio. PlayaZul is 1/2 a block from Pebble Beach Drive, the premier beach access area for all of Crescent City which offers several public beach access stairways, blufftop picnic spots and miles of scenic views perfect for bike rides & strolling. The closest beach access stairway is about a block away--- an easy 3-4 minute walk. PlayaZul is the best of both worlds--luxurious living with a casual, warm and welcoming feel.
Dan and Sarah both have careers in environmental conservation, so we like to keep in close touch with the natural world we are fighting to protect. Del Norte County is one of our favorite places in California. We We are drawn to the North Coast because it is a magical, miraculous place, and surprisingly undiscovered compared wtih the rest of the California coast. The breathtaking ocean views, abundant wildlife, old growth redwoods, the ancient salmon and steelhead runs in the Smith River...we love it all! We feel privileged to be able to share our little piece of paradise with others who are similarly inclined to get off the beaten path. We hope you make some secret discoveries of your own as you enjoy the best of what the North Coast has to offer.
Beth Moore purchased this house in 2013
We were looking for a beach house that was close enough to see, hear and smell the ocean without having to scrape the salt off the windows every weekend! We chose PlayaZul because we immediately fell in love with the 'vibe' of this house. It is so warm, welcoming and casual, and yet also classy and pleasing on every level. The previous owners spared no expense on the design and materials. From the lush gardens to the recycled glass and handmade saltillo tile to the eco-certified hardwood floors to the chemical-free paint and LED lighting, this home was designed to be appreciated by people who recognize quality and seek to provide it in an environmentally sustainable way. We both love to cook and entertain, and the open floor plan was made for the hoildays. The spacious kitchen with dual convection oven is a cook's dream. The Master Bedroom with its walk-in cedar lined closet is a private retreat. And the front, back and side gardens invite birdwatching, al fresco dining, bookworming and napping. In a word, we loved it the minute we laid eyes on it! We hope you do too.
There is no better place on the North Coast to curl up in front of the fire with a good book and storm watch in the winter. The upstairs family room and deck provide distant ocean views. You can hear the roar of the waves hitting the rocks in the winter, and the distant barking of the sea lions in the spring and fall. Even on foggy days, the side patio frequently catches the afternoon sun, and it is the best place for lunch among the flowers spilling over the fence and thru the garden gate. All interior and exterior paint is zero-VOC (no toxic compounds). We are just 4 houses up from the ocean and 1/2 a block from beach access stairs on Pebble Beach Drive. Walk north for a leisurely stroll on the sand, or turn to the south for tidepooling at low tide. Enjoy miles of scenic views whether you are walking, biking, driving, or just sitting at a picnic table on the bluffs.
We spent two weeks in PlayaZul Cottage. It was a delightful experience as it was a comfortable clean place for us to get out of the Arizona summer heat. We enjoyed the gardens and the comfortable sitting rooms, kitchen and the extra large shower. Beth Moore, the manager was a real asset and helpful in every way. Crescent City had the necessary stores and a great museum and a terrific Chamber of Commerce where we were given lots of information on the area.
The CA coastline was absolutely beautiful and a walk on one of the beaches is amazing. The side trips to the Redwoods is recommended too.
Cozy house. Cute garden. Good appliances. Kitchen supplies adequate. Towels, sheets, pillows, blankets clean but not so fresh comparing to those at hotels.
PlayaZul was a great place to have for our home base while we explored Northern California. The garden is fantastic and you can enjoy some relaxing times there in between seeing the areas surrounding Crescent City. It is a beautiful and comfortable cottage.
We enjoyed walking down to the beach at low tide and looking for starfish and other sea creatures. We spent many days exploring the near by Redwood forest which amazed us with it's vast beauty.
The property was very clean and well maintained and was just as described in the listing. I would recommend PlayaZul to anyone wanting a beautiful cottage close to the ocean and near by Redwoods. Wish we could have stayed longer because there is so much to see and do in the surrounding area.
My family of 4 plus our inlaws enjoyed our time in Crescent City. We loved Stout Grove and the Boy Scout Tree Trail as well as the Trees of Mystery. We all had our own bedroom and we liked being able to make our own meals. Having two living spaces was also convenient. I could read my book by the fireplace while the rest of the family watched TV upstairs. The house was nicely decorated and the outdoor spaces were a nice touch. The place was clean and well maintained and the property manager was a good communicator. This place is only half a block from the clean and we were able to watch the sun setting across the ocean one evening. We enjoyed 5 lovely nights at this place and highly recommend it to future visitors.
While exploring the Redwoods with my wife and 2 children, we stayed at Beth's property in Crescent City, which is a great jumping point for heading to the Redwoods. Although it's a small town, there are some good restaurants (Chart Room, Marlo's) and a Starbucks, as well at the Battery Point Lighthouse, a must-see if you go. The house itself if a block from the ocean, in a very quiet neighborhood. The space was very clean, had great kitchen amenities, an awesome upstairs porch for relaxing, great Wi-Fi, comfortable beds, great water pressure in the showers, etc. We greatly enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay there again!
We LOVED it here! Perfect walking distance to watch the sunset every evening. The kids played in the tide pools during low tide. We walked over to the cheese factory one day, we toured the lighthouse and even drove a short drive into the Redwoods to go kayaking. This house is so charming with it's beautiful woodwork, bright blue hydrangeas in the yard and the sea lions barking in the distance. I loved the two stories and how there was a hang out room upstairs where the kids could gather together and watch a movie or play Sorry for the umpteenth time. Everything we needed was supplied at the house and didn't have to worry about anything but purchasing the food, which is terrific. We would definitely stay here again!
This property is 4 houses up from Pebble Beach Drive, Crescent City's premier ocean-front drive. The greenway along PB Dr has great public views and multiple stairway access points. Enjoy the scenic Battery Point Lighthouse from the picnic tables just steps away from your front door.
