Beautiful island style cottage with sunset views and tropical garden. If you want to experience true Hawaiian living in an eco-friendly natural environment this is your place. Have a soak in the tub, pick fresh herbs, veggies and fruit or stroll through the beautiful gardens and commune with nature. Watch the sunset from the meditation room lanai. Furnishings and art from around the world help make Hale Meow Meow truly a special place.
My parents met and got married on Oahu in the mid 1940s. My mother was a pilot and mechanic at Hickam Field. They moved to Georgia and I grew up there. I bought this land with my sister and mother and moved to Hawaii. I have spent much of my life traveling the world and now my sister has moved and i stayed and i am a jewlery designer. I still travel to Asia alot searching for treasures for my jewlery, and have started this vacation home and the farming. I love plants and animals so this life has been great.
Linda Grimes purchased this cottage in 1989
When I first saw this property it was nothing but a thing called christmas berry but I knew it was where I should be. It was a long slow process turning it into what it is today, but worth every bit of it. Now, I just love being here.
Hale Meow Meow is an exotic botanical garden paradise. You will be offered an array of fruits, many of which you will taste for the first time. You may enjoy a sunset bath in the garden. You can make a lei from flowers falling from the sky.
Comfortable beds, a full kitchen, access to laundry & a big flat screen for movies lend the final touches needed for anyone to let go and be swept away by aloha spirit.
Linda is the consummate hostess & guide, happily explaining each fruit and tree in the garden. She also provides a fresh selection in the fruit box. Beyond organic, it is a taste fantasy.
Hale Meow Meow is nestled into the jungle 1000 feet above the Pacific. For unobstructed sunset views, walk across the street. Far enough south of Kona to be removed, but not remote. Pebbles, Kealakekua Bay, Milolii are short drives. Down steep hills.
If you have a family & are planning a week or two stay & want to be comfortably secure, Hale Meow Meow would be an excellent choice. Our only regret was that we only had 3 nights which even Pueo was sad about.
Note; fruits are available in season.
I couldn't have found a more true Hawaiian property than Hale Meow Meow!! Situated perfectly for travel to Volcanoes, beautiful beaches, shopping in Kailua, Kona! The property was so tranquil I found myself wanting days of downtown to just stay & enjoy Meow Meow.
Breathtaking sunsets, adorable pet visits, the grounds were so inviting. Linda, our hostess, was delightful & happy to share the wealth of fruits for us to indulge daily. A well stocked property; all that you need, do get groceries, it is remote.
I would definitely recommend the Hale Meow Meow for the best Hawaiian experience you could have on the island.
Wow what an amazing place to stay! After staying at other lovely vacation rentals on Oahu and Maui we arrived at Hale Meow Meow and instantly fell in love with it. Before we had even really seen all it had to offer we knew we had saved the best til last on our honeymoon. Linda is such a lovely and accomodating host (and a really inspiring persn to talk with) and the house and gardens are immaculate, beautiful and magical. We only wish we had more time there. As other reviewers have noted the kitchen and bathroom are so well stocked with the little important things (good utensils, condiments, spices, ziplock bags!, sunscreen, insect repellant) that it feels like a home not a rental. The design of the house is perfect. Screens rather than glass on a lot of windows allows for lovely breezes, a sense of space and connection with nature. The outdoor bathhouse is very private and felt like a real treat. Pueo was a regular and very chilled out visitor (he seems more like a dog than a cat!) all the wildlife felt very close at hand. We have already recommended Hale Meow Meow to a number of friends as long as they don't try to visit when we want to come back! Thank you Linda for creating and sharing such a wonderful haven on an already beautiful Island.
Hale Meow Meow, with its ménage of well-tended gardens and fruit trees, is a cultivated oasis in a lush Hawaiian forest. The home itself is like a sprawling tree house and provides you every modern comfort without compromising your connection with all of the beautiful nature that surrounds it. Linda, a gracious and generous host, lives only a short distance away, so if you need anything, she's always right at hand. As someone who rents home in lots of places, this one was especially great. It had everything we needed to start LIVING right away. There were plenty of spices already on hand, all kinds of cooking utensils, the best kitchen appliances...the bathrooms were stocked with plenty of towels, plus additional helpful items like sun screen, bug repellent (we did not need it), shampoo, conditioner, etc. This house is about a 1-hour drive south from the Kona airport. There is a large market about halfway down rte. 11 (the road to the house) where you can load up on a great selection of groceries (check with Linda for details). I also recommend holding out for lunch till you get to Captain Cook (a town about 1/4 the way into your journey) or stopping for coffee at one of the roadside stores that you'll encounter on the way. Rent this home. You'll love it. With the wild pheasants in the morning and the most beautiful chameleons that scamper across the tropical leaves, this place will enchant you and your family.
I echo the sentiments of other reviewers: Hale Meow Meow is a very special place indeed.
Thoughtfully and lovingly created and maintained, both the house and gardens have a magical feel about them, with carefully chosen pieces of art / craft from all over the world. Climbing up into the high upstairs bed (semi-enclosed) was like a journey back into childhood...laying there at night watching the stars...ahhh.
The kitchen is very well-stocked, with more herbs, spices and oils than I have at home, not to mention a plethora of tea varieties and fresh coffee beans. It is possible to create true meals without having to buy a ton of condiments. Oh, and the knives are actually sharp!
As other reviews have mentioned yes, there are stairs, and there are critters outside if the garden. Screens rather than windows, movies rather than TV channels. If you are looking for a cookie-cutter condo-land experience try Kona instead.
If, however, you are seeking something real then Hale Meow Meow is unmissable. One is part of nature rather than shut off from it, surrounded by lush gardens, incredible fruit, and a magical atmosphere.
To top it all of, Linda and the kitties (especially Pueo) are incredibly welcoming and warm - perfect hosts, and so lovely. This was favorite place to stay in Hawaii; I wish we had longer (but will definitely be back).
Just book already!
My son, mother and I stayed at Hale Meow Meow the first part of November 2015. It was beautiful, peaceful, and everything we had hoped for in a cottage in Hawaii. We enjoyed fresh bananas, starfruit, avocados and key lime -- to name a few! -- from the property and Linda. By the end of our stay, I really felt "home" and hope to go back again! Linda was such a pleasure to visit with, and I feel we made a life-long friend in her, and in Pueo. I highly recommend Hale Meow Meow!
Great central location for all sights on the Kona side of the island. There are beaches as close as 5 min. or 15 min. and a National Park just 15 min. away.
The volcano National Park is only 1 1/2 hrs. away.
