About Linda Grimes

My parents met and got married on Oahu in the mid 1940s. My mother was a pilot and mechanic at Hickam Field. They moved to Georgia and I grew up there. I bought this land with my sister and mother and moved to Hawaii. I have spent much of my life traveling the world and now my sister has moved and i stayed and i am a jewelry designer. I still travel to Asia a lot searching for treasures for my jewelry, and have started this vacation home and the farming. I love plants and animals so this life has been great.

Linda Grimes purchased this cottage in 1989

Why Linda Grimes chose Opihihale

When I first saw this property it was nothing but a thing called christmas berry but I knew it was where I should be. It was a long slow process turning it into what it is today, but worth every bit of it. Now, I just love being here.

Perfect Hawaiian cottage!

  • 5 of 5

I'm so glad I read the other reviews that led me to book Linda's place. It was exactly as described but even better in person. Of all the places that we stayed on both Maui and the Big Island, her place was the highlight of our trip. Very private setting, picturesque, spacious, clean, and central to the main areas on Big Island. We plan to stay here again when we come back. Linda took such good care of us with a basket of fruit every morning and gave us a tour of her fruit trees. Thanks for having us, Linda! You won't regret booking here. Hopefully you will get lucky like we did and find the availability for the dates you need.

We loved our stay at Hale Meow

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Hale Meow was magical and enchanting. The extensive, private grounds abounded with flowers and vines of every sort. The Blue Jade vines were particularly exquisite. Linda has created a Shangri-La with her gardens, her decor from all over the world, and a distinctly meditative vibe. The beds and linens were extremely comfortable, and the huge screened windows made for refreshing ventilation. The kitchen was incredibly well-appointed and included a canister of delicious 100% kona coffee. Hale Meow has a full complement of beach gear, from boogie boards to snorkel gear to beach chairs, umbrellas, water shoes, coolers, etc. Having master greeter Pueo show us around and keep us company every day made us feel welcome and at home. Linda herself is a most welcoming, warm and witty soul and host. She thinks of everything, including refreshing our fruit box daily. Hale Meow is truly a taste of real Big Island Hawaii, far from the resort aspects of Kona...... down home, ecologically-inspired, complete with cats, chickens, and the ever-present (and, to our ears, soothing) coqui frogs. We will return to Hale Meow Meow and highly recommend it to others.

Delightful Kona cottage

  • 5 of 5

HaleMeowMeow is a delightful cottage in a tropical forest garden with amazing flowers, fruits, bushes and trees.

Some days we stayed at the cottage and just relaxed. Some we drove north to Kailua, the Native Hawaiian historical sites or Hapuna beach, one of the best in the islands. Other days we drove to South Point or on to Volcanoes National Park or Hilo.

The gardens provided all the fruit we could eat. Pretty much everything else we wanted to eat or drink was available in Captain Cook. We found excellent restaurants along the coast north and south.

Two cautions: Because the weather is so mild, Hawaii is an outdoor place. It gets cool in the evening, which is good for sleeping, but requires more warm clothes than we had expected. The roads along the mountainside provide spectacular views, but they take more time than we expected from the map.

Our hostess Kinda was very kind and had excellent suggestions for where to go, what to see, and what to do. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

A beatifull property on the lush part of the Big Island

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Hale Meow Meow for a week to re-explore the big Island and liked it very much. Linda is a great host and provided both trip information and local fruit. The property is located on the west side of the Island south of Captain Cook which provides much of the needed services, but Kona is still easily reachable. This also makes a trip to the volcanoes park and the south side of the island easy, a car is a requirement though as nothing is within walking distance. The Hawaiian style apartment sleeps four people comfortably and has all you need to rest after a day of exploring. It even included beach shoes and snorkel equipment. The yard is lush green filled with much tropical fruit. There are some very quiet beaches nearby and snorkeling in Captain Cook bay is always great. Linda lives next door and took very good care of us and was available for advice when needed and we would like to return some day.
