Shangri-La is a beautiful octagonal home located on Old Bank's Road. Walk 2 minutes from the wrap around deck and a magnificent ocean view unfolds. The house is surrounded with palm trees, fruit trees, and a meadow that stretches to the Atlantic Ocean. The wrap-around deck is a perfect spot for enjoying the breezes from the Atlantic Ocean while eating outdoors on the new six person dining table. Stretch out on the outdoor sectional and listen to music. The children can enjoy playing in the grass area or exploring the neighbourhood. Relax on the two-person hammock and read a book or enjoy a cocktail.

Once you enter this log home you will be welcomed with the airiness of the twenty-eight foot ceiling and the tropical decor throughout. The open concept living room, dining room, and kitchen will allow you to visit and enjoy your vacation with all of your family members. Enjoy watching tv using your Netflix account from home or hook up your iPod/MacBook/iPad to our stereo docking system. Free WiFi is offered at the house. Listen to Bahamian or Nuttin radio station through live streaming on your laptop and surround yourself with Bahamian music.

The two bedrooms are extremely large and each comes with an ensuite bathroom. The master suite has a king size four poster bed, while the second suite has two queen sleigh beds. The two bedrooms have air conditioning and ceiling fans. The windows of the house can be opened to enjoy the beautiful Atlantic breeze or the two A/C units can be used to cool the main floor of the house. For those who need extra sleeping room the open loft is equipped with a queen bed and a twin bed. A third washroom/laundry room (washing machine) is available off the main living area. The entire house has ceiling fans. The house is located on the most fantastic cottage road (quiet and relaxing) and has easy access to the Queen's Highway. Beautiful linens, bath towels, and beach towels have been chosen with care and attention to quality.

The kitchen is equipped with all of the necessary utensils, cutlery, coastal dishes, and turquoise glassware. It also has a fridge with freezer, microwave, blender, gas stove/oven, blender, coffee maker, and four slice toaster. A small selection of spices are provided. We ask that vacationers replenish those spices that they deplete. The next vacationer will appreciate your kindness. The dining room table can easily sit six people and there is additional seating at the breakfast peninsula which has two seagrass stools.

A short walk along the path (150 metres) takes you to a breathtaking, deserted Banana Beach (Atlantic Ocean) where you can beach comb, snorkel, suntan, or get lucky enough to swim with wild dolphins. A 10 minute walk along the beach or cottage road (Old Bank's Road) will take you to Sky Beach Club and Pascal's Restaurant where you can enjoy a cocktail at the swim-up bar or dine while taking in the view of the Atlantic Ocean. The infinity pool and hot tub can be used free of charge and our guests are welcomed by Sky Beach's terrific staff and managers.

If you would like homemade cooking in the villa. Please ask our staff and they will cook for your family at a very reasonable price. Our staff will shop for local seafood and produce, prepare the meal, and provide clean up. This is a truly Bahamian experience that our guests love!

The town of Governor's Harbour is 5 minutes away by car and has a charming collection of 19th century homes and churches overlooking its historic harbour. Buy fresh fish and lobster every afternoon from fishermen at the town dock, or visit the recently restored Haynes Library, which dates from 1897, for the weekly coffee hour for foreign residents and tourists. Governor's Harbour has grocery stores, restaurants, liquor stores, two banks with ATMs, a bakery, gift shops, and a medical clinic. Friday Night Fish Fry in Governor's Harbour, a street/beach party that brings together all the tourists and locals with food, drink, and dancing in the street, is not to be missed.

Eleuthera is famous for its 100 miles of spectacular, deserted beaches. The island, home to just 8000 residents, is completely safe any time of the day or night. Enjoy the rare experience of picking up hitch-hikers and leaving your keys in the car wherever you go. The snorkelling, diving, and fishing on the island are world class. Boating, surfing, and other water sports are also popular. You can rent power boats, sailboats, sea kayaks, and bikes. You can have a charter captain take you out for excursions of various types. There is excellent sightseeing as well. Eleuthera has vast caves, cliffs, a bottomless ocean hole, many unique beaches, historic churches and 19th century homes, and small villages to explore.

For additional sleeping accommodations, we have our cottage available. Orchid Cottage has two bedrooms, one bathroom, and an open living and dining area. The combination of Shangri-La and Orchid Cottage would comfortably sleep thirteen to sixteen guests.

Come stay at Shangri-La and enjoy our piece of paradise on the beautiful Island of Eleuthera.

Shangri-La is always being improved. New linens, new towels, new outdoor cushions, new washing machine, brand new mattresses and bedroom furniture have been added. In March of 2015 we added a microwave, iPod stereo system, and Smart TV. In July 2015 the living room was furnished with beautiful coastal furnishings: sectional sofa, tropical woven side chairs, and beachy tables, as well as turquoise dining room chairs. We will continue to add new items to the property to make it a beautiful vacation get-away for everyone. The house can accommodate 9 people in beds and an additional 2 people on a blow up mattress. A total of 11 people can stay at Shangri-La.

Ideal for our family reunion

  • 5 of 5

The accommodation was perfect for our party consisting of myself and my husband, two grown up daughters and a teenager who enjoyed his own space upstairs. The house is spacious and light and conducive to give each of us our privacy with our own individual bathrooms and when we all gathered together there were lots of choices as to where we chilled out. The location was peaceful, the beach amazing the local people were all so friendly and we had great support from the owner and her contacts on the island. All in all a most comfortable place to stay.

Beautiful, Relaxing Get-Away

  • 5 of 5

We had a complete blast on our week long getaway. The house was spacious and I loved the fresh air and natural light. Having the beach so close was incredible for a quick morning beach visit, head back for breakfast then turn back around again :)

Most our time was spent lounging on the patio or the hammock catching up and enjoying the beautiful view.

Sky Beach is a beautiful scenic walk along the ocean to get to some tasty frozen drinks and delicious dinner.

Can't wait to go back again!!

Owner's Response: You've touched on so many of my favourite things about Shangri-La. The wrap around deck is such a beautiful spot, especially the tropical flowering trees, the sound of the ocean in the distance, and the palm trees. Walking the beach is amazing, and knowing that you are going to have a cold, pina colada made by Sammy at Sky Beach is extra incentive to move quickly. Thanks for choosing Shangri-La. We hope that you come back soon!

Fantastic fit for a family!

  • 5 of 5

Shangri La is nestled amongst palm trees which create much needed shade for little vacationers, and is a short walk away from a beautiful beach for big vacationers. The house is clean, well stocked, and very comfortable. The owners were very helpful and the team they work with on the island were all lovely. We absolutely recommend this property and hope to return one day.

Great get away house

  • 5 of 5

we stayed a long weekend at Shangri La and the house was perfect. It was really homey. It has almost every amenity you can imagine. It is nestled amongst some nice shade trees and the ocean is only a one minute walk over the hill. It's in a nice quiet area, we didn't hear a sole. The loft is not ideal for someone that likes to sleep in as it is open to the living area, however, the 2 bedroom are super spacious and very quiet. You cannot hear anything in the other room. I highly recommend this house.

We love the quiet atmosphere of Shangri-La and the tropical meadows that surround it. The quick walk to the beach, makes it so easy to go snorkelling and swimming. Banana Beach is always so quiet and beautiful!

Five days in Shangri-la

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for our family. There were 6 in our group; 2 active 60+ yr olds, 2 40 somethings, and two teenagers. The boys loved the loft space, it was perfect for teenagers to have their own space, but still be around and participate in the conversation. The large deck was great for morning breakfast and reading, and was a good place for early risers to hang out while the rest of us were waking up. The long two-track road that runs in front of the house and goes along the beach is perfect for running. The beach is a short walk from the house and was stunningly beautiful. While we were there, the waves were big enough for gentle body surfing--gentle enough for all six of us to enjoy. The house was well-stocked with things you usually have to purchase when you rent a house (salt, pepper, spices, sugar, tea, etc), as well as towels, snorkeling gear, lawn chairs, etc. The location was great for us....a short drive to Governor's Harbour as well as gorgeous beaches on the Caribbean side and many more on the Atlantic side. It was also very close to the airport, but not close enough to be bothered by airplanes. Brian, the property manager, was very helpful with getting us into the house and making sure we had everything we needed. While we were there, a strong wind blew from the east, and it was great to be able to head to the sheltered Caribbean beaches.

We liked so much about our trip and our stay at Shangri-La, it's hard to come up with things we didn't like or could be improved. One of our party, me, got a lot of bug bites. I think they might have been little sand flies down at the beach, but I only seemed to notice them at sunset. There were some small flying beetles that the kids noticed at night, but frankly, I was glad they weren't mosquitos or cockroaches. There were frequent power outages, but I think this was an island-wide problem. The Wi-Fi worked well. There was no TV, which was mostly a blessing. We were visiting in the midst of the NCAA basketball tournament and would have enjoyed watching the games at home. But since there was no TV, we went to Ronnie's Hi-d-Way to watch the game, and that was one of the highlights of the trip. The local people were so friendly and warm, it was really a great time.

Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your holiday experience at Shangri-La with other vacationers. The house is a perfect size for a large group and the variety of amenities make it very comfortable. New bedding, towels, and furniture have just recently been added to the villa. Old Bank's Road is my favourite road on the island for exploring, enjoying evening walks, or for taking a jog. Banana Beach is such an incredible beach for a variety of reasons. It sounds like everyone in your group enjoyed your day of body surfing. We are lucky to have a very professional property manager who takes great pride in sharing our home with others. As a real estate agent for Coldwell Banker, he is always available to share real estate opportunities with those who want to purchase a piece of paradise. The no see ums are a concern for me, while others in my family are not bothered at all. A good bug repellent applied at dawn and dusk when they are the most active, really helps. I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed time at Ronnie's watching the basketball games. The Bahamian people are so friendly and welcoming to travellers. I can understand why that experience was one of your favourites. Thank you very much for staying at Shangri-La and for sharing your great vacation stories with others. We look forward to your return!

Simply great.

We stayed for a week in a group of 5. The property is very clean and well maintained. There are ample ceiling fans to keep the air comfortable and circulating. The bedrooms also have AC units if they are required. The outside shower is nice too. We stocked up on groceries and beer the first day and cooked most of our own meals in the kitchen and on the BBQ. Groceries are a little over 5 minutes drive up the HWY. We did eat out at a few different local restaurants as well.

The nearest beach is on the Atlantic side and takes about 1 minute to get there on foot. The water is warm and very clear. Snorkeling is excellent. There are several reefs to explore. It was also very private. We saw a handful of people pass by throughout the entire week.

We had access to a vehicle and were able to tour a good section of Northern Eleuthera as well as water taxi (5$) to Harbour Island for lunch. Getting around is a breeze as there is pretty well one main road but you drive on the left side.

I would recommend this property for pretty much anyone. You can relax on any of the nearby beaches bordering the Atlantic or Caribbean. Or if you're up for exploring, you can check out Preachers Cave, the abandoned navel base, or the beautiful glass window bridge. I wish we had more time to check out the South end.

Can't wait to return! Oh, and try the hot sauces!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to write a review for Shangri-La. As a group of five young, professionals, it's exciting to hear how much fun you had on this "quiet" island retreat. Being able to share meals and cocktails, listen to music, and just enjoy everyone's company is one of my favourite things to do while I am there. The hot sauces that you refer to must have been from Eleuthera Island Farms. They have the best salsa, home made bread, fresh vegetables, and of course hot sauces. Spending time at Banana Beach is definitely a daily activity during my stays at the house. I really enjoy bringing a cooler, beach chairs, and snorkelling gear to the beach and spending hours there. It is always as private as you noticed! It's usually so quiet, that when you do see someone coming, you wonder what they are doing on your beach! It sounds as though your group really enjoyed touring the island. Day trips to various places on the island are so much fun. I have been travelling to the island for six years now and I still have many beaches to discover. Thank you again for submitting a review. Your group of young professionals is welcome to return when your schedules allow for another vacation.
