There is a grocery store/corner market conveniently located across the street, H&W Market. It opens at 830am and closes late on Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays. It has coffee and a very good deli with a variety of fresh, made-to-order sandwiches. Other deli items include lasagna, tamales, cheeses, macaroni & potato salads, etc.... for those late night hunger pains.
Up the street to your right as you leave the building, on Fillmore Street is a local coffee shop, Alamo Square Cafe has plenty of breakfast goodies and good coffee to choose from.
Also nearby is a mini mall that has a large supermarket, SAFEWAY... south of the apt (left on Webster St when you leave the building) just about a half a mile down the road.

Our apologies but we cannot offer this as an amenity at this time. The blower/jets work but it takes a very, very long time to heat up. The wiring will be changed out at a later date.
We are centrally located in the heart of SF. Alamo Square / Hayes Valley is one of the most vibrant and revitalized neighborhoods in San Francisco. It includes wine bars, cafes, five-star restaurants, high-end boutiques, clubs, bars, close to movie theaters, Civic Center/City Hall, museums, the symphony & the Opera House and much more. Public transportation is very convenient with a bus line right across the street if you want to head downtown (21 Hayes). The 5 Fulton line is just 2 blocks away.
You can find some of the best coffee and foods in this part of the city and much more in the nearby districts. Also within 1 mile walking distance is the Fillmore District which offers the same with a handful of jazz clubs to enjoy. You have the Painted Ladies to the right and City Hall to the left, Western Addition behind you and the Lower Haight in front of you. Great spot to be!
I suggest to use public transportation. The 21 HAYES is right outside of our apartment! This convenient bus line will take you directly downtown and connects onto other bus lines that will bring you to other neighborhoods throughout the city. Another bus line close by is the 5 FULTON which is only 2 blocks south of us (behind the apt). It's only a 10 minute walk to Van Ness MUNI station, and 15 minute walk to Civic Center MUNI station for BART and other MUNI lines.
MUNI is an integral part of public transit in our city, operating year round and connecting with regional transportation services, such as BART, Caltrain, SamTrans, and AC Transit.
ADULT FARE: $2.25
CHILDREN: $.75c (ages 5 - 17yrs)
The city's lone subway tube is called MUNI Metro; also 3 cable car lines, and a heritage streetcar line known as the F Market & Wharves. MUNI shares 4 metro stations with BART. Travelers can connect onto San Francisco & Oakland International Airports via BART.
Convenient for driving. We do not have a garage. Parking is very expensive here in SF!! FREE parking can be found on our residential streets nearby. Metered parking are on most business areas. Located just off highways 101, 280, and 80. VERY EASY ACCESS to the freeway and only 2 mins away from our apt which leads you right to Oakland Airport and the SF International Airport.
You can explore many nearby neighborhoods by walking a mile or two in every direction from the apt.
Other Things to Note:
This building still has the original narrow staircase from the 1900's. The spiral staircase was removed so you can get through with your suitcases!
We have a small water heater so it's best to take short, quick showers in order to have enough hot water to go around for a large group...especially since we are experiencing a drought/water shortage in CA.
At present, the hot tub cannot be offered as an amenity at this time. The blower/jets work but it takes quite a while to heat up. The wiring will be changed out from 110 to 220v at a later date. Our apologies.
The main closet is 3/4 full of the owner's personal belongings and clothing. You may hang some of your clothes there if you wish or hang your clothes on the suit rack provided or on the rack in the second bedroom.
There will be an additional fee for laundry service if you want more towels other than what was provided and/or linen service. Please be considerate of our water shortage/drought in CA.
There is a key/knob for the skylight windows in the island drawer if you wish to open and/or close them. You can open the back door to the deck to catch a gentle breeze.

Denise was very flexible with our arrival and departure. We loved that a few food items (milk, juice, coffee, oatmeal and English muffins) were provided. So thoughtful! There were plenty of bath towels and pillows. The view on the deck is great. Laundromat right on the corner, convenience store on the other and bus stop right out front!
There are a lot of stairs, some a bit tight if you have large luggage. We packed very light though, so it was no problem.
We will definitely check for availability the next time we're in San Francisco!
We were three ladies travelling from overseas to visit family. Stayed for 2 1/2 weeks. It was very suitable for our stay. Good to come home to after a long day out. We were disappointed with the bed linen all miss matched, musty and tired. The shower was needing some TLC. But overall it was suitable for our stay. They should sort out the hot tub, dangerous when walking around that bedroom. The stairs were manageable, but not if you have walking issues. The hosts had the apartment welcoming. But we never met Denise and when we arrived there was no one there to meet us, even with phoning, the hosts knew our time of arrival. We found out that her son was waiting in the apartment for us through another resident. That was disappointing after a long flight. Wish we were told just to ring the door bell and that long wait on the street would not have happened. All in all a convenient location for our stay.
Denise, Mark, and Simon were gracious hosts that were easy to communicate with. They started us out with a few grocery items such as milk, juice, jam, bagels, cream cheese and some pantry items.
Gaining access to the top floor apartment was quick and easy. I grew up in The City (Bernal Heights), so upon entering the home I was immediately reminded of that SF feel. They've done a nice job of updating the apartment's interior of this older building, and it's exactly as described. It is quite a trek up the stairs to get to the apartment, so it's not for the faint of heart! Carrying our bags through one of the narrow parts of the staircase was a bit challenging.
The smaller bathroom has a stand up shower, but it is very tight. Girls, no way to shave your legs in here! The second, larger bathroom attached to the back room is a nice size, but curiously the shower head is handheld and does not have a mount above your head. It is mounted down near the spout at the foot of the tub. I think this shower/tub would be more functional if they just installed a holder above head height for the shower head.
It does appear to be a dual purpose rental and looks as though someone still lives here when it's not being rented. This was apparent with the personal artifacts that were still about, especially in the closet of the front room.
Some of the towels and overall air in the place was a bit musky. I really suggest they drain the non-working hot tub in the back room. It made the air very stale. Either that, or get that bad boy heated up and working! There is such an amazing view of the city from that room off the back deck and it's a shame that room can't be used more because of the stale air!
Getting to and from the top floor is interesting. The entire building seems to have been converted into a few different apartments. The front entrance is shared. It's typically dark in the main entrance/hallway, but they have set up motion sensors that turn on lights upon entering, but it is dimly lit at best. The neighbors seemed nice.
These are very new members to Homeaway at the time of my rental (2/2017), so I think with time they will get some of this experience to be even better.
The location is AMAZING. Can't go wrong with traveling to nearby attractions and restaurants. Parking was tough later at night, but you don't even need a car here. Just Uber or Taxi or WALK everywhere!
If I visit Denise's place again, I might give it 5 stars if all is improved!
We stayed at this place while attending a Conference in San Francisco. The apartment worked very well for us and we were pleased with it's location and the overall amenities. Also, Denise and her family were very helpful and punctual in responding to emails and phone calls. I would recommend the place to other people and we would definitely stay there again.
We did not find the penthouse as nice as we expected. Here are reasons:
In general, we felt the penthouse was not very clean. Specifically, the bathroom shower had black moldy looking residue in the grout. The smaller throw rugs did not appear to have been washed in a while. The larger area carpets did not appear to have been well vacuumed. The apartment in general needed a good paint job.
There were no extra pillows. We had to use the pillow in the shams in order to have pillows for all six of us.
One of the burners on the stove was missing a control knob.
There were two small refrigerators in two different rooms. One larger fridge with an ice maker would have been better.
Overhead skylight covers were difficult to close at night when temperatures dropped. The wall heater in the main room did not work.
The non-working jacuzzi in the back bedroom was still full of water and put a slightly stale odor in the room.
Although forewarned, the three narrow winding staircases leading to the penthouse are quite inconvenient when handling larger or heavy suitcases. In addition, the lack of parking is inconvenient.
No surprise, it is exactly as described. Very easy for 6 people (family), very very well located, pretty quiet. I would go back without hesitation and would recommend to my friends and family.
