My Father built this house in 1960. I grew up in Prairie du Chien. After my parents passing I inherited the property. My Uncle lived with my parents until health reasons caused his move to special facilities. After high school graduation I went from Wisonsin to Virginia and got a BFA degree in Interior Design from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1974 From there to Connecticut for 5 years and then to my present home in Ft Worth Texas. Been in Texas since 1979 . With intermittent visits to my home in Wisconsin
Allen Cejka purchased this house in 1960
My father built the house His family came from Europe to this area in 1863. So 4 Generations have lived in this area. This regional area is a River resort Agricultural community, with relevant local history in the development of Wisconsin and American History.
Prairie du Chien is the second oldest city in Wisconsin, Green bay being first, and Prairie du Chien second 1863. It was the Fur trading center for the Indians and Trappers to trade. The Aster Fur trading Co was located here. The water ways were the means of transportation from the Mississippi to the Wisconsin to the Lakes to Canada . Lewis and Clark explored this area. Zachery Taylor was stationed here before becoming President. During the Civil War This city was a hospital center for wounded to recover. There is a Military Cemetery in the City. Artesian Water Wells produced a destination place for people to come and partake.
One of Wisconsin's first wealthy families 'Herculius Douhsman 'resided at the '' Villa Louie'' a restored and functioning historic residence open to the public with in the city. It is also the location of the First Ft. Crawford. One corner building has been restored and the grounds are plotted where the buildings were located on the property. The war of 1812 was also fought in the city as well. This historic battle is re enacted on a yearly basis as well as an Indian and Fur trading settlement working as it was during the early years. The Second Ft Crawford was built in another area of the city also near the Mississippi River. Dr Beaumont a medical Dr. has a Museum showing his works and contributions to the medical profession.
Along with these specific historic amenities, The River its Water activities and rentals, and historic sites there are also on the Wisconsin side of the River Wyalusing State Park with its paths and adventures and activities, there are also two Parks on the Iowa side of the River. Pikes Peak Park and Effigy Mounds and the 'Lady Luck Casino'
My dad built it. It has hard wood floors, a washer and dryer and a freezer, Mature tree's and shade. and Parking for 6 to 8 Vehicles in the drive way.
It is a great place for family and friends to gather. It a block away from a park with additional amenities and 5 blocks away from the Mississippi River boat dock Landing. Also a trailer park for additional campers and friends, just down the road..
This was a very comfortable home. We enjoyed our stay.
We came to go camping, unfortunately could find cabin, yes the home had an odor to it from all the wood, but it was clean, quiet n home like. The woman I spoke with was so nice, and gave a lot of history information. I would stay again
We had a great time in this home. We had to reach out to Allen with a few questions and he was quick to be responsive. The home has a lot of character to enjoy. If we attend Country on the River next year, and Allen is still offering the rental for a few days, we are hopeful to stay again!!
If you are looking for the latest and greatest in amenities, look elsewhere. If you are looking for great views of the river, keep looking. But, if you are interested in a homey, comfortable stay with a down home feel, this might be the place to stay. The house has the feel of staying at grandma's house; basic amenities, furniture that borders on antique, and scuffs on the floor. But, it gives you the feeling of being at home and has room to gather in the livingroom to talk, watch a movie or play board games with the family. It's right in town, so you can pick a direction and explore the area with easy access to highways and bridges to take you where you want to go. The landlord is great! He called before our trip to see if we needed anything special and supplied an extra air-mattress so that all 5 of my teenagers could sleep comfortably. Yes, there are still personal items around the house, but they aren't in the way and they can be interesting. My kids learned about old Hollywood actors from looking at the movie cases in the livingroom. It started a conversation with my teens, I call that a win! The house isn't elaborate, but it's comfortable and clean, and for the money it was the best way for a large family to stay a few days in Prairie du Chein. I will rent this house again if the opportunity presents itself, which I hope it does.
We were in town for a funeral and stayed here because everything was booked. It was a nightmare. Just to list a few issues, sink in kitchen would not drain, floors were filthy and had not been swept or mopped in months, hair all over the bathroom and tub, urine on the toilet and surrounding floor, spider webs all over the house, outdated appliances and furniture, kitchen pans had the teflon scratched off the bottoms, mouse droppings found in one corner, stained furniture, broken basement windows and so much more... This house is furnished as if somebody lives here. Canned food in the cabinets had expiration dates from 2004. Aspirin bottles, lotions, soaps on shelves in the bathroom that were all outdated. The house smelled off mold and was full of clutter and junk laying everywhere including the downstairs basement. Live spiders living in the ceiling corners in every room. We killed several and swept down the webs. The basement is eerie and has a huge hole that has been dug out of the ground for what looked like a tub installation. The appliances were caked with food and oily from not being wiped down for so long. The garbage disposal was broken. All of the silverware, dishes, pots/pans were from the early 90's. The furniture was old, dusty, smelly and falling apart. The bathtub has a handicap bar attached to the side that is a safety hazard. The tub was stained and dirty. None of us walked around without shoes on because the floors were so nasty. We could not use one room due to a lady bug infestation. There were 100 of them crawling all over the walls and ceiling. The extra blankets he provided were stained and old. We washed everything we slept on. We used some of our own sheets and blankets due to being so freaked out. According to the neighbor the house was built in 1930, and it shows. This place is nowhere near being up to par for any renter, it should be condemned. The 19 inch tv in the front room is easily 20 years old and turns off by itself after it got too hot. The owner hasn't made an effort to renovate or update anything to today's standards. There is nothing comfortable about this house. We did not rest well and stayed away as much as we could. He has no business putting this house on vrbo. My next step is to file a complaint with the city's board of health. What is the most upsetting is my kids were subjected to this filth. The idea of this owner collecting money from people to stay here is outrageous.
Prairie du Chien is know for the Historic Dousman House 'The Villa Louis' One of Wisconsin's first Wealthy Families,
Near the Villa, is a full size replica of the First Fort Crawford with stone markings of the other buildings in the compound.
Prairie du Chien was the yearly gathering place for the Indians and Fur traders to meet. There is a reenactment of the camp and the life style of the settlers and the Indians every year.
The war of 1812 was also fought in Prairie du Chien... There is a re enactment of the battle every year as well
It is a River resort town with the Mississippi and the Wisconsin Rivers on two of its sides. It is located in a valley along the Mississippi River and the Wisconsin River.
There are three major parks with in 15 miles of Prairie du Chien. On the Wiconsin side of the River There is Wyalusing Park overlooking the Wisconsin and Mississippi River. Great Views and activities going on all season. On the Iowa side of the River is the Pikes Peak Park and Effigy Mounds. Both have different and interesting activities for all ages and all seasons. Both have views of the Mississippi River. Also on the Iowa side of the river is 'Lady Luck' the River Gambling Casino...Three floors of a variety of card and slot machine choices....One floor is non Smoking.

day trip will occupy your time here. There is also spring Green ...Frank Lloyd Wrights... Compound. This one may need reservations far in advance to get in.
There are also Dog races and another Casino in Dubuque Iowa just 60 + miles. Platteville, Wi A college town and a lead Mining exhibit. Dickeville A' Grotto 'to visit
Prairie du Chien is on the Great River Road with lot's of Views and vistas with many Eagles to watch along the way
Many small town along the river on the Wisconsin and Iowa side have antique shops and town halls and other buildings of interest.
Mineral point is also a mining town about 40 miles away with the Pendarvis house as an attraction also Shake rag village.
