No better view, and great central location.

Guestbook comments from the manager

From the minute we drove up to the house we were in love. As you pull into the driveway you have a spectacular view of the waipio valley and it only gets better when you get into the house. The house is fantastic, nothing has been overlooked. The lanai is the place to relax, enjoy the view and listen to the surf, although you can do this from inside as well. The furnishings were first class. The master bedroom is huge, the bed was super comfortable, and the sliders to the lanai (with great outdoor shower) was perfect. The master also has a huge walk in closet and bath with jacuzzi tub. The main part of the house was very warm ,with dining, living and kitchen(fully stocked) all in one area - plenty of room. As there were only 2 of us we didn't even go into the other wing, but the rooms were all large and nicely appointed. Everything is new and I can't say enough about how nice this house is and how much we felt at home there. There is also a great in-law suite downstairs. Ron - the property manager, was available for our few questions. Thanks Ron! The town of honokaa has a nice grocery store, gas stations, restaurants, and shops to poke around in, about 10-15min. drive. Lastly, the biggest draw for this home is the valley itself. It is truly a sacred place. I never tired of looking at the view - you can see from all over the house. You can explore by walking down, or driving if you dare. If you have a chance, stay in this house, you'll be happy you did.

Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers.

Located on the northern Hamakua Coast, the sacred Waipio Valley was the boyhood home of King Kamehameha I, and an important center for political and religious life in Hawaii. Not only is 'The Valley of the Kings' an important site for Hawaiian history and culture, it's also a place of dramatic tropical beauty. This fertile valley is about one mile across and over five-miles deep, and surrounded by cliffs up to 2000-feet high. Waipio Valley was once the home of thousands of Native Hawaiians. Today, there are less than 100 residents living amongst the waterfalls, taro fields and rivers permeating the valley. Hawaii Island's tallest waterfall, Hiilawe Falls cascades down 1,300 feet in the back of Waipio. You can view the valley from the coastal Waipio Valley Overlook at the end of the Hamakua Heritage Corridor drive, or you can take a guided van tour, hike, or horseback ride to explore the hidden wonders within. Beautifully appointed Hawaiian home overlooking Waipio's black sand beach

If your looking for a beautiful, private, comfortable spot to use as your home in Hawaii, this is it! Yes, that picture of Waipio Valley is exactly the view from the lanai, the kitchen, the outdoor private shower (there are indoor showers too....but why inside when view is so great outside?), the backyard while BBQing and while lounging on lawn chairs etc. Bring your binoculars as the spinner dolphins are fun to watch from the house! One early morning, we hopped in with a local friend as he drove his truck down the 4WD only (but walkable) road to Waipio beach. It was awesome.

The home is so nicely furnished with all the kitchen accessories, wifi, landline telephone, comfortable beds and bedding, towels and indoor and lanai furnishings to add to our vacation's comfort. We made our own meals with local fare and used a provided soft sided cooler to carry lunch and snacks.

We stayed for 8 days to relax and base from as we visited some of the Big Island including HI Volcano National Park (rain day), North Kohala, Mauna Kea summit, Botanical Gardens, many waterfalls and two trips to Hapuna Beach to get in a perfect dose of ocean swimming.

It was wonderful to wave to the Waipio Valley Cultural officer as we drove down and to the left onto the private road leading to our home away from home.

Thank you Daniel and Janet for sharing this home. We miss it already and hope to return!

Dream Vacation

  • 5 of 5

A breathtaking view from a beautiful house! Everything you could want(towels, umbrellas and beach gear and a fully stocked kitchen) is provided. There were six in our group and we cooked breakfast and supper together many days. It is off the beaten path which adds to the atmosphere of being a true hawaiiin and not a tourist. The town and stores are close by and offer all you could want. Hawaii is beautiful but this is a piece of heaven . We would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to visit the Big Island.

Amazing place

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six adults and three young kids had a marvelous ten days in this beautiful home. The beds are comfortable, the furniture is comfortable, the kitchen functions very well, the house is clean and bug-free. So it was a great place to lounge and meditate upon the unbelievable view.

It is remote, as one reviewer mentioned, but as the Big Island's sites are quite distant from one another, it doesn't really matter where you stay, you still have to drive a lot. But when you drag yourself back in the evening, exhausted, there is the lovely lanai and the sound of surf awaiting you.

My fiance (now wife) and I traveled with our parents to this vacation rental as part of our grand tour of the Big Island of Hawaii. Last time I visited the island I stopped at the lookout for all of 5 minutes, and I vowed I would return one day to further explore the beauty Waipio has to offer. After looking at all other vacation rentals around the area, this one best suited my needs (at least 4 beds, ocean view, and private) with ease.

When we arrived at the rental everything was perfect, and the property description was spot on. The management is very good a communicating. The pictures speak for themselves; it truly is paradise. The home is located on a private road and it is the second last property before the road dead ends (the last house being a long term residents of the area whom are very friendly), so this property is VERY private. The home is well appointed with natural and neutral colors though out. The kitchen is higher end (when compared to most vacation rentals) with above average dishware and cutlery, which is a very nice touch when contrasted against the usual "cottage rated" kitchen accessories other owners use. The beds were comfortable and there is a neat outdoor shower on the patio off the master, which I used every day during my stay while I peered into the valley.

Overall, we spent a lot of time on the balcony (which is only accessible by walking through the house). From there you can watch the whales breach in the water and the odd surfer catching a wave. We spent little to no time in the lower level (which is the studio walkout and a VERY large garage). It is worth noting that the lower level studio is not directly accessible from the main house, it has its own entrance with no internal stairways connecting the two.

I plan to return one day, and I would recommend for anyone to stay here. If you have an appetite for secluded nature with the comforts that come from a lavish home such as this one I would highly encourage you to stay at this rental, regardless of your party size.

60 Miles
KOA and ITO both about 1 hr 15 min both < 60
Nearest Beach

Black Sand Beach, Waipio Valley < 1

You can find some additional info about the area at An intro video shows how easy it is to get to the house.

There are two different horseback groups in the valley and both go through streams and are more relaxed and free with your use of the horses. A favorite of my girls.

There are boogie boards and surfboards if you want to try the waves, an intermediate wave beach, but favorite of locals.

Local guided tours of the valley can be arranged. Multiple trails so be sure and bring your hiking shoes, water shoes.
