Pescaglia Cottage Rental Photos and Description

La Capanna Sleeps Up To 4 Persons - 2 Bedrooms With 2 Bathrooms En Suite

Recently restored, the house has all modern conveniences whilst maintaining its original Tuscan style and charm. There are 2 bedrooms with bathrooms en suite on the lower floor with access directly into the garden. Upstairs there is a very light spacious sitting/dining room with a characteristic Tuscan fireplace. The kitchen is well equipped with a lovely picture window looking out to the surrounding hills. Leading out of the kitchen is a terrace for al fresco eating.

Podere Consani lies in an idyllic setting amongst well-tended natural gardens,(lavender, roses, lemons and herbs) that lead into the adjacent olive groves, vineyard & woodland, in the hills between Lucca and the coast. The house shares a swimming pool with the one other cottage and the English-speaking owners who live in the main house. The owners take great care to ensure guests are happy during their stay whilst respecting their privacy. They produce their own wine and olive oil.

Nature-lovers,painters and walkers alike cannot fail to enjoy the wonderful surroundings and lovely views and although Podere Consani is set in this oasis of peace, it is however only 15 minutes before the majestic walls of Lucca come into sight.

Within a few minutes walk is the Podere Consani stud where it is possible for children to ride the lovely pony 'Chocolate' or feed the little goats.

There is the possibility to have cooking lessons or a meal cooked for you in the house.

About Susan Beeby

I, Susan, came out to Italy in 1969 and instantly fell in love with it all - the hills, the historic cities, the food and the people. Having lived here ever since, my views haven't changed.

I married my husband Lelio and a few years later we bought Podere Consani and gradually restored it, making it the beautiful place it is today.

Susan Beeby purchased this cottage in 1978

Why Susan Beeby chose Lucca Area

We were really lucky to find this beautiful property - 3 very old stone buildings on the top of a hill surrounded by flat land and with wonderful uninterrupted panoramic views - 360°. It is well known in the area due to the fact that it is quite unusual to find a property in the hills with so much flat land around it.

What makes this cottage unique

The views and the surrounding land are what convinced us to choose Podere Consani. My husband specializes in restoring old properties and this was such a wonderful place to restore - a sympathetic restoration maintaining its historical integrity.

Wonderful Setting

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 greatly enjoyed our recent stay at Podere Consani, which, as we hoped, was a perfect base from which to explore Northern Tuscany. The cottage and surroundings are as lovely as the pictures indicate. Susan and her family were very warm and welcoming; always helpful. As we had not done a great deal of advance planning, Susan did a wonderful job with recommendations and advice on choosing destinations and restaurants. We love to hike and with Susan's advice we were able to log quite a few miles/km on some of the most scenic trails in the region including Cinque Terre and Campocatino (in the Alpi Apuane). We also took in a number of other great attractions, including Lucca, Pisa, Barga, Castelnuovo. We would certainly recommend staying here.

First time La Capanna, Second time Podere Consani

  • 5 of 5

We (myself, my husband, our 8 year old son and dog) are like cats who will alsways find our way back to Podere Consani!!!

May 2015 was our second time at there, we stayed again for 2 weeks, but this time in La Cappana (which I think means Bell - there is an old church up the hill of which the bell rings in the evening - a walk up there is a must - a small little taverna sits right opposite the church)

Susan and her family welcomed us, as the previous time, with warmth and kindness. As always, they were there, but never were, neither our privacy nor our relaxation time ever intruded.

The pictures of La Capanna on the website is every bit and more of what it has to offer. The two big bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms are down stairs and the kitchen with living room and dining area are upstairs. Staying in this beautiful stone house, with the pool right our your doorstep, rather feels more like home than a rental.

I loved preparing the food in the kitchen with its huge windown overlooking the olive groves and the valley...made it hard to stay out of the kitchen!!!

Once a week at the local super market in San Marino in Freddana, fresh fish from the ocean are sold. Preparing that on the outside grill (BBQ) on the terrace, with a good glass of Tuscan wine, the peace and quiteness of the surroundings, you would wish that This never ends!!!!

Everyone of us had a good time and was happy, even our dog, who had Napo and Puma to play with, the family's two labradors.

We have already booked again for May 2016!!! It is something about the people and the place, it just feels right!!!

Owner's Response: Many thanks Marietha - its great to know that a place WE love so much gives so much pleasure to others staying there. La Capanna actually means 'barn', which is what it was when we bought the property in 1978. We converted it into the house it is today 12 years later. We look forward to your return visit in a couple of months. Many thanks again, Susan

a return visit (Ged Hocter)

It's idyllic - so much so that we are returning for the fourth time this year! We have been coming to Italy for over 20 years and have always tried different places until discovering this lovely location. My wife always comments on how quickly she manages to wind down fron her stressful job. Some days we relax by the pool while a short drive to Lucca is always a treat. My daughter loves cycling on the town walls and I happen to like the music festival which has always coincided with our visits! The beach at Viareggio is no distance and the sheer beauty of the surroundings means that we just keep coming back! The villa is clean and comfortable and Sue and her family are ideal hosts. Podere Consani is a real pleasure!!!

Amazing Location, Hosts, and Property!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 7 days in September with our 18 month old daughter and had the best time! Susan and her family are incredible hosts and provided us with all the information we needed for a fabulous stay. The villa was charming, comfortable and the perfect home base for our adventures. The pool was gorgeous, we ate every night outside, and loved going to visit the horses and goats with our daughter.

We LOVED Lucca and would highly recommend this area if you are thinking of coming to Tuscany. It is close to Florence, Cinque Terre and the town of Lucca itself is lovely.

This was our first time to Tuscany and we definitely hope to be back. We loved our stay at Podere Consani!

Jewel of Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

We spent an ideal week at Podere Consani in July. Our family of four (parents + 12 and 14 year old boys) loved the mountain beauty of this lovely home. Podere Consani sits just 20 minutes outside the walls of Lucca and enjoys all the location benefits of Lucca plus the tranquil preserve of a mountain villa. [Rick Steves describes the well preserved medieval city of Lucca as the perfect place to center a Tuscan vacation as it is an easy trip to cities such as Pisa, Florence, Sienna, Vinci and the Italian beaches.]

Hardly a “barn” the cottage we stayed in was perfect for our family with two bedrooms (each with its own full bath), a well equipped kitchen, and a living room / dining room. We cooked many of our meals at the cottage but also enjoyed local restaurants. The cottage sits literally just steps from the cool alpine swimming pool and is nestled into the gorgeous gardens of the estate. My sons brought their soccer ball with them and had plenty of space to kick it around. For animal lovers there are approximately 15 horses and several goats on the property. [Susan’s daughter is a world-class equestrian who rides with the Italian National Team!]

Our host, Susan, helped us with directions and suggestions for sights and great restaurants. When she made reservations for us, we found that the restaurants treated us with extra care and hospitality – clearly in respect to their friendship with Susan. Every recommendation was great. Susan and her family were generous in their kindness and conversation but never intruded on our privacy or relaxation.

In addition to visiting Vinci, Pisa and Lucca, we enjoyed a short trip (walk) to OliveArt where a wonderful Italian craftsman turns gnarled olive wood into treasured pieces with unbelievable grain and patterns.

We loved our stay in Podere Consani and all the great locations around it. However, despite the fantastic sights in and around Lucca, more than anything, we cherished relaxing by the pool, sipping succulent local red wines and enjoying the breath-taking mountain views. If you want a hot, crowded, city house, look elsewhere. However, if you want a relaxing and beautiful mountain villa removed from the dust and hubbub of the City you should look closely at Podere Consani. We are already planning our return trip.

Owner's Response: Dear Rob and Ann, Many thanks for writing such a great review - I'm really glad your time here made such a strong impression on you all and I hope that now you are back in America the memories will keep you happy through the coming winter. For the sake of others who I hope will read this lovely review, I should perhaps add that the house is situated in the hills above Lucca - the hills are not high enough to be considered mountains as they are only 270 metres above sea level. Do come back - and next time try the cooking lessons! Best wishes to you all, Susan

Podere Consani is situated on a plateau in the lovely hills between the magnificent old town of Lucca and the coast. It has wonderful views overlooking the surrounding countryside - to the south-east towards Lucca and the more distant plain to Florence -to the north the stunning marble mountains and the Garfagnana with its picturesque hill-top towns & to the west the sea.The nearest beaches are at Viareggio (30min) and further up the coast are the beautiful sea-side towns of Lerici and Portovenere and the fishing villages of the Cinque Terra. In fact it lies in a very strategic position - only 20min from beautiful historic Lucca, surrounded by the magnificent walls on which one can walk or bike, 45min from Pisa airport and other historical cities such as Florence, Siena and S.Gimigniano are within easy reach. S.Martino (4km) has restaurants, a supermarket, banks, chemist etc..There is lots to see and do - that is if you can bear to tear yourself away from the beauty of Podere Consani.
