Greg and Gloria are originally from Dana Point California, and have been on the island for 15 years. We started bringing our children here for family vacations more than 2o years ago, always planning to move here on each and every trip. Greg had a construction, remodeling and landscaping business on the mainland, and Gloria worked as an interior/landscape designer until a physical injury led her into a second career as a an American Express Travel agent, specializing in Hawaii of course. Once we arrived here we started an new remodeling business which we just retired from. In 2013 we decided to make our home a vacation rental. So many friends and family members had suggested we do this over the last 8 years it felt like we were meant to. It has truly been a wonderful sharing our love of the island with all of our vacationing guests. Having people enjoy all the years of hard work we have done here is the most rewarding experience we have ever had, and making new friends is a great bonus too. While the property is listed for sale we are now just renting our the "HIBISCUS HALE OHANA"
Gloria and Greg Sawrey purchased this apartment in 2004
We spent ten years tearing down, rebuilding, remodeling, adding to and landscaping this former sheep pasture and shack into the place it was always meant to be. It was literally a tear-down when we purchased it, and we had several moments (I really mean months) of buyers remorse and shock while enduring years of turmoil and constant upheaval. To say its been a challenge is a drastic understatement. Upon completion which we thought might not ever happen, we were exhausted. We both sustained some severe injuries putting an end to our remodeling career in 2011. Then one day a light bulb came on, I slapped myself and blurted to my husband " We should make it a vacation rental like everyone has been telling us for years! We don't know why we didn't do it sooner, but that is the reward for all the hard work. That is the best part of the entire adventure, the light at the end of the tunnel!
Our slogan is from'' HUMBLE HOVEL TO HEAVENLY HAVEN"
and we hope you will feel the same.
The natural beauty of this coast line is what makes living here so special. It sparkles like a jewel, with the azure blue ocean, the nearly hundreds of shades of verdant green, topped with an incredible opalescent sky, a rainbow almost every day, and seeing the whales playing from the lanai, you just can't beat it.
Gloria and Greg are some of the nicest people you will meet. They were awesome hosts and helped us with ideas on what sites to see. They even helped us with our trip to Oahu. Their house/property was beautiful and well maintained. It was very clean and we felt right at home. We had plenty of room for our large family of 7. It was great that they provided beach/snorkel gear. They have everything you need. I would definitely recommend this place to everyone.
We enjoyed being on the Hilo side of the island and also traveled to many parts of the rest of the island, exploring everything there was to see. One of our favorite spots was the Volcano National Park. The beach we liked was Hapuna Beach State Park on the Kohala Coast.
Greg and Gloria's home in Hilo is a beautiful and relaxing place to stay. It is a very good value. The home is sort of like a duplex, where the vacationers stay in the large side and Greg and Gloria live in a smaller part which you can't really see. It's a really great design. You don't even know they are there, except that they have the uncanny ability to always be available to give tourist advice or just be friendly hosts. They met us on the evening we arrived and had food and goodies for us weary travelers. Gloria also did a great job of communicating with me prior to arrival about all sorts of useful things I may not have even thought of. She is a former vacation specialist and she put together a book with suggested itineraries for each day you are there. Both are a wealth of knowledge about where to go and what to see.The house is equipped with Hawaii travel books and magazines, as well as a wall of pamphlets, so you will be a well-informed tourist. The house and grounds are absolutely gorgeous, yet very homey. I have never seen such beautiful gardens in my life. It looks like a professional botanical garden. You can get fresh mangos right from the property. The house was very clean and had all the home amenities you could ever want including kitchenware, beach towels, tons of reading books and beach gear. The lanai is HUGE, like an outdoor family room and has a small kitchenette and dining table. There is a large wading pool, about 3 ft. deep, which also is beautifully landscaped. If you are looking for a non-resort like experience where you can relax, this place is great. As for staying on this side of the island, there are pros and cons. It is very beautiful and tropical and thus tends to rain a lot as opposed to the west side which has better beaches, but is almost desert-like. There is plenty to do locally, like the Hilo market with crafts, jewelry and produce, as well as explore lots of waterfalls and a Botanic Garden. We ventured to Volcano National Park, Black and Green Sand Beaches and over to Kona. Greg will tell you the best beaches for body surfing and snorkeling. I would definitely recommend that if the Hilo area is the place you want to stay, then THIS IS the place to rent!
We vacationed at Hibiscus Hale/Kololia’s Garden in February 2014. Our son’s college baseball team was in Hilo for a series of games against University of Hawaii, Hilo.
Kololia’s Garden offers peace, tranquility and relaxation, so if you’re looking for a place to relax and unwind, this is the place.
Kololia’s Garden is just north of Hilo. It’s a short, beautiful drive into town. Akaka Falls is just down the road from Kololia’s Garden.
Below is our review from 2014;
“Hospitality….that’s the best description for the time spent at Kololia’s Garden. For the past twenty years my family has spent at least one (1) week a year in the Hawaiian Islands. This year (Feb 19th – Feb 26th 2014) we looked for a more Hawaiian experience, away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki or Kona. We decided to spend a week in the Hibiscus Hale at Kololia’s Garden and found the experience to be quite pleasurable. The hospitality was superb and the gardens are among the best in Hawaii. The vacation was complete…time to relax around the pool and garden, with ocean, hiking and waterfall excursions just minutes away. Definitely the best bang for your money!!!”
My husband and I stayed at this property from Feb 6th - 17th - I do not have enough good things to say about how kind and accommodating both Gloria and Greg were!!!! the house is incredible - had everything we could ask for and more - it was so clean I could not believe it!!! The photos of the yard for sure do not do it justice - it is like having your own personal jungle in your backyard - Both Greg and Gloria are incredible landscapers - we spent a few days just enjoying the sun by the pool with the most incredible vegetation right there!! It was comfortable, they could not do enough to make our vacation absolutely perfect!!!!! Tons of privacy - I would recommend this home to anyone looking for a great, beautiful, quiet, private vacation!!!!! Loved it!!!!
Amazing plantation style home with beautiful gardens and pool. Very peaceful and relaxing for our getaway. Gloria and Greg are amazing host that were able to answer all of our questions and give us advice on where to visit. The photos don't do it justice and would highly recommend Hibiscus Hale to all that are looking for a peaceful and relaxing vacation on the Big Island.
We had such a wonderful time here. After our long days of sightseeing we were thrilled to come to this incredibly clean, comfortable and beautiful house, we felt at home. Even taking a few dips in the pool was awesome. The location was perfect, lots of privacy. Everything was above my expectations. The kitchen had everything that we needed. Greg and Gloria are awesome Host. I will be back again:)
We are located on the scenic east side of the island, the rain forest side. Just 5 minutes from Umauma Falls and Akaka Falls, and two of the best zip lines in all of Hawaii. Also within minutes is the best surf beach on the island, Honolii, and historic Laupahoehoe Beach Park with BBQ gazebos, showers, hiking, fishing,and snorkeling. Laupahoehoe Village features a Train Museum, history of the Hamakua Coast sugar industry and the famous Fifties Diner visited by vintage car enthusiasts the world over. There are spectacular botanical gardens with the most beautiful coastal scenery, and nearby horseback riding or Atvs to take it all in. Activities here are for just about any age or interests.
