About the property

One bedroom, two bathroom, 1800 sq. ft. House on three private acres

Originally built to showcase redwood craftsmanship for a local steam mill, this house has open beam straight grain virgin redwood ceilings with old growth redwood paneling in a sunny area of three private acres. Quarter sawn white oak wide plank flooring beautifully compliments the redwood interior. Skylights provide a bright and inviting interior with beautiful forest and meadow views from every window. The modern kitchen has a Sub Zero built in fridge, Wolf range and oven, dishwasher and microwave all integrated with custom alder cabinets, granite counter tops, and a copper sink. The lighting is accomplished with lutron controls that create many beautiful lighting scenes at the touch of a button. The main bathroom has a big claw foot bath tub, marble floors with in floor heating, and gorgeous views from every window. The master bath has a shower with beautiful forest views and a door that leads onto the deck with a two person hot tub. The living room has a beautiful wood stove, flat screen tv, leather seating, and a wireless stereo system. The wrap around deck has beautiful views in every direction, a barbeque, hot tub and some outdoor seating. The property is in a sunny clearing surrounded by forest with a year round creek, redwood grove, and large oak trees.

About owner

My wife and I grew up in West Sonoma County.

Why owner chose Sonoma County

This house once belonged to my wife's grandparents who owned the steam mill in the same valley. The surrounding property has been in the family for generations.

What makes this house unique

This is a unique house with a unique history going back to the origins of the Redwood Empire

Guestbook comments from the owner

I wanted to take this time to thank you and your family in sharing the Redwood home with us. We had a comfortable and very enjoyable stay there. The home is beautiful and we felt all the love, blood, sweat and tears that went into preserving and updating the home. I was sad to leave the area.

Awesome place.

Country redwood masterpiece is the correct way to describe it.

My husband and I were lucky enough to be able to spend 9 days at the redwood house as we celebrated our 20th anniversary. When we planned this trip, we were looking for something that would be a good home base for exploring the Sonoma County wine regions. This place was so much more. Clean, comfortable, and well appointed with the right amount of technology. We had no issues. Prior to our trip the owner was easy to reach and quick to respond to our questions. This was our first experience renting a place in this way and it could not have gone better. We will be back to this area and hope to be this lucky again and get a repeat stay. If you want a place to really relax, this is it. You won't be disappointed! There are 2 other houses close by, but we did not see another person the whole time we were there. Just a few deer, some turkeys and other small critters. Oh and be sure to watch the DVD on the history of the mill, the family, and how the house came to be.

Very Comfortable Property

  • 5 of 5

The Sebastopol Redwood House is very well set up for a comfortable stay. The home is spacious, the bed comfortable, the kitchen quite functional, and the living and dining areas welcoming. The home is very clean and very well-maintained. The instructions for use of the house are thorough--nothing left to chance. Highly recommended!

Wonderful stay in Sebastopol

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I absolutely loved our stay in this house in Sebastopol. We came from the east coast not knowing what to expect in Sonoma County, and found the location perfect for adventuring into the town of Sebastopol, visiting the Barlow, (Crooked Goat Brewing, Woodfour Brewing), had couple nice lunches (HopMonk Tavern, The Gypsy Cafe) and breakfast (A Whole in The Wall - gotta order the Dutch Baby, it's awesome). It was in a semi-private, gated lot with plenty of privacy and beautiful grounds for outdoor adventure. We hired a local photographer (Karenscape Photography) to take our 30th anniversary photos right on the property. The house was clean, comfortable and the sound system with Pandora was an added bonus.

We travelled the coast (Bodega), visited many wineries in Sonoma, a couple in Napa, but we enjoyed Sonoma wineries (people, atmosphere a bit more down-to-earth) much better than Napa; had breakfast at Howard Station in Occidental where we strolled into a few galleries and visited a small, resale shop - very cool - had some nice treasures from the 60's and 70's).

Bring a lunch tote for picnics at the wineries!

We highly recommend!

Serene and Peaceful High End Retreat

  • 5 of 5

If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to stay in this house, you will not only get some much needed rest from the trials and tribulations of the state of the world, but you will participate in a remarkable bit of history. This beautiful, natural, and tastefully wrought home was originally part of the local steam operated redwood logging company and has been loving maintained, updated, and restored by the thoughtful next generation of family owners.

While you are out in the woods, you are only a few miles from interesting restaurants and shops in either direction.

Run don't walk. And once you get there sit, relax, and soak it in.

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

This house is beyond amazing. My boyfriend and I were looking to get away and have peace and quiet and that is exactly what we found. I found this place last minute and the owner, Joel, was very accommodating and responded quickly. We loved reading the story of the house. It is so beautiful, made out of redwood, with a wraparound porch, comfy leather couches, a huge modern kitchen, and a very comfortable king-size bed. It was so quiet that all we could hear were the wind chimes and the birds. The hot tub for 2 was perfect for us at night, and we ate breakfast on the porch in the mornings. The great thing was that we felt like we were staying in a "rustic" cabin, but it had all the modern amenities you can think of - lighting with different settings that we could change with the push of a button, heated bathroom floor, modern kitchen, surround sound music. I can't say enough about it and I can't wait to go back. The only thing we would change next time is to stay in the house more and go out less. Thank you Joel and family for sharing with us!!
