Silhac Barn Rental Photos and Description

Converted stone barn with stunning valley views in Parc Regional Monts d'Ardeche

Le Chiat is a restored and extended stone barn; part of a pretty hamlet, amongst chestnut and pine woodland, in the hills of rural Ardèche. The south facing garden enjoys all day sunshine and has beautiful unspoilt views across the valley.

Le Chiat is a split level house and has 3 floors. The lower entrance is down a few stone steps into an open plan living, kitchen and dining area with high ceilings, a contemporary fitted kitchen with breakfast bar, and a log burner.

The connecting old barn - comprising bedrooms, games room and bathroom - is reached either via the mezzanine or up a couple of steps from road level.

There is a covered patio outside with large table and lighting for Summer evening dining. There are also sun loungers for relaxation - it’s a great place to sit and read.

Le Chiat is at the end of a cul de sac and there is ample parking.

Suitability:
  • children welcome
  • non smoking only
  • pets not allowed
  • wheelchair inaccessible

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Jeff and Lynn

Spent two glorious weeks in your barn at Le Chiat. It was everything we expected and was very well kitted out. My favourite spot in the whole house is your covered patio. I am sure there is a fancy name for it ! Some evenings you could sit out till late and on one we actually lit the log fire.

We soon found our bearings and explored the whole area and beyond, though going up from Duniere on the first night was quite daunting and we felt that we were going to be more isolated than we actually were. I even cycled from the house to the top of Mount Ventoux and back the following day on week two.

You have lovely neighbours, especially Olivier and his wife and the Dutch family who both invited us to swim in their pools. The lady from the end of the road, whose dog keeps going awol even offered Ann Marie jodhpurs to go horse riding.

Your info folder was excellent and we completed most of the excursions. The activities on the Eyreiux were just as good as the Ardeche and Aquarock were an excellent company and very efficient. Their climbing park was a big hit.

We tried all the swimming spots and have to say that the one in L’Olieres was the most popular with our kids.

The one thing that struck us is that all the locals that we met were extremely friendly and helpful, one of the advantages of visiting a less touristy area. The Eryieux valley has everything that the Ardeche has except less people.

We rented bikes for the kids from a lovely man on the way into Vernoux. The same shop that does quads and motorbikes.

Finally Estelle was very nice and helpful.

Again many thanks and we have brought home fond memories from the Eryeiux valley.

Kind Regards

David and Ann Marie

Roomy, well equipped, clean and in a beautiful part of the world.

We had perhaps our best holiday ever here. The Ardeche is fantastic for beautiful scenery, lots of things to do, good food and peace and quiet. The owners recommended a local gorge for wild swimming and it was sensational - really beautiful and the children had a ball. We also canoed, rented bikes and cycled the Eyrieux valley, went on a steam train, gasped a huge views on rural walks, tried zip wires and climbs over the river at Aquarock, toured Avignon but we kept coming back to the wild swimming. And I managed to read 3 books! A great base for a family holiday. We wished could have stayed for another 2 weeks and crammed even more in!

There are a few compromises - if you want fresh bread you need to be willing to drive 20-30 mins each morning (the bakers in Vernoux are definitely better). Shopping needs planning as you don't want to forget anything and have to go back for it! Neighbouring properties are close by so if you are unlucky to get noisy neighbours you will notice (we didn't and found our neighbours to be very friendly). The gardens do overlook each other, but again this was not a problem for us.

Spring break in Ardeche

  • 5 of 5

The house was very clean and well-prepared for us (family of 6). It's very large and has plenty of room for one or even two families (although only one bathroom). The setting is beautiful in a little hamlet, with only two houses nearby. The decoration is modern and contemporary. The owners were very helpful. Our children enjoyed playing in the garden and horse-riding at the nearby stables. There was a lot to see nearby, although we would have like to have some more good restaurants - one in Chalencon has to be booked in advance "Chataignes et Champignons". Loads of interesting places to visit for day trips, like the new Caverne du Pont du Pont D'Arc. We would definitely recommend this house and this area to visit.

Maison magnifique dans un cadre idyllique!

  • 5 of 5

Le Chiat is situated in the commune of Silhac in the Parc Regional de Monts d'Ardeche, at an altitude of 600m. We are about 20 miles west of Valence, which is a small but chic city in the Rhone valley on the main A7 Autoroute.

The nearest restaurants are at Chalencon, a pretty hillside village about 5 minutes drive away, where there is also a cafe tabac and a boulangerie.

The nearest town is Vernoux en Vivarais, about 15 minutes drive, which has two boulangeries, a large supermarket, a selection of shops and several restaurants. Vernoux also has a municipal swimming pool with outdoor water slide and sunbathing area, and a swimming lake (with lifeguard in the summer).

The climate in Ardeche is hot in summer and mild in spring/autumn. Le Chiat is situated in a forested area (mainly chestnut and pine) and in autumn the golden colours of the trees are quite spectacular, as well as being a good time to collect chestnuts.

We are only 15 minutes drive from the popular Eyrieux Valley where there are beaches for river swimming, canoeing and other watersports.

Local activities: If you like walking, the opportunities in Ardèche are endless and there is a Grande Randonnee (national walking trail), which passes through the forest 200m from our house.

For horse riding, there are stables only 5 minutes away at Sarnoux, where Jean Daniel will gladly take guided tours with parties of all abilities.

There are several nearby locations for river swimming, the best being at St Sauveur de Montagut in the Eyrieux Valley, or more locally at the Duniere gorge. At les Ollieres you can hire canoes or go to the Aquarock adventure park.

This is a popular area for cycling - both on road and MTB, but you need to be reasonably fit as it is quite hilly!

Bicycles are available for hire in nearby Vernoux, as well as motorbikes and quad bikes.

In late summer/autumn mushroom picking is a favourite activity for the locals - Chanterelles are particularly abundant and sometimes ceps. In October you can pick up more chestnuts than you can carry.

The local Market is at Vernoux every Thursday morning, where there is a wide selection of local produce and cheeses.

Day trips from le Chiat: There are numerous places that can be visited within a day, including:

Avignon with its famous bridge and Palais des Papes;

The Ardeche Gorge with organised canoe trips;

Nimes with its Roman amphitheatre;

The Camargue with its flamingoes and beaches;

Lyon;

Uzes

Getting to le Chiat: By Car - We are situated about 45 minutes drive from the A7 Autoroute at Valence

By Train - Valence is just 5.5 hours train journey from London using the Eurostar and TGV trains. You can board the train at either the new St Pancras International or Ashford Station, and check-in only takes 10 minutes. Car hire is available at Valence TGV station, which is about 10km outside Valence, and the drive to our house takes just under an hour.

By Plane - The nearest airports are Avignon, Lyon, Nimes and Grenoble, all of which are around 2 hours drive, and have regular flights from many UK airports. Marseille and Montpellier airports can also be accessed, both about 2.5 hours away.
