About Carefree Getaways St. John
Eric Lambert is the owner and builder of Blue Aweigh Cottage. He and Paula Lambert purchased the property (land) in 1980 and built their own home. Then in 1992 built a cottage for Paula's parents to retire in. Hurricane Marilyn blew it all down in September 1995. Including the main house. Note: In 2017 after Hurricanes Irma and Maria owners relocated permanently to the States. We rebuilt our home and finished it in 1997, but did not get around to rebuilding the cottage until 2006. Paula's parents left the island in November 1995 with no desire to come back (who can blame them). But Eric and Paula have deep roots here and finally were able to rebuild the cottage. It is named Blue Aweigh which is a play on words because it literally BLEW AWAY! Both homes are constructed of solid concrete now, and were designed to take the whatever the elements dish out! Our children were born and raised here. Eric is an avid SCUBA diver. Eric built 30 homes on St John.
Carefree Getaways St. John purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Carefree Getaways St. John chose Estate Chocolate Hole and Great Cruz Bay
We purchased the lot for the view. Period.
What makes this Cottage unique
The view is amazing, the location is quiet and safe. The cottage is cozy and comfortable-affording sunrise view and the pool deck is a great place to enjoy the sunset. We always have cooling tradewinds and the night skies are full of stars. The pool and hot tub are entirely for the use of our guests. The cottage has open beam ceilings, and open spacious floor plan.

Blue stay at Blue Aweigh
The cottage is a great (short) distance from Cruz Bay, and the space is perfect for 2 people. The property is for sale, which was not disclosed to us prior to arrival, so realtor and client visits for several days of our stay were intrusive. The property is not lacking in any amenities, however, maintenance issues were a problem during our stay as well (no hot water for several days, algea in the pool making it unusable the entire stay, hot tub too filled with chemicals to use).
We regret these guests had some unfortunate things occur during their stay. They did not inform us of the pool and spa issues until the 3rd day of their stay. As soon as we found out we took immediate action to remedy, and eventually changed our pool maintenance company.
Hot water problem was due to faulty timer and batteries. We thought the battery being replaced worked, there was hot water after that, but that battery also died. Timer has been replaced with a new one.
As to realtor visits, our property is on the market. We did ask guest permission to show and were told it would be fine. As far as we know there were 2 showings and guests were informed and given opportunity to say no thank you.
The realtor did visit due to an emergency in the main house (not the rental cottage) the day before the 1st request for showing, and was unavoidable.
We did give these guests a $100 certificate for dinner at Lime Inn, a very good restaurant as a way of apology for their inconvenience.
You can read all of our recent 5 ⭐️ reviews and see that this was an extremely unusual situation and we did sincerely explain and apologize to the guests.
Future guests will have a written notice of the property being for sale, our realtor has the rental schedule and will make every effort to schedule showings between arrivals.
We have a very good track record and are proud of that, and our reaction time to problems has always been immediate. This situation was a complete anomaly.
We loved our stay at blue aweigh!
Enjoyed our stay in St. John’s!
A happy experience on St. John
Clean, spacious, well maintained unit, in a hill-top location. Access road a little rough, but the views are worth it! The owners were very nice and gave us very good tips about getting around on the island. We would go there again!
Chocolate Bay escape
We can't say enough good things about this property. Well cared for, spectacular view, gracious greeters and VRBO staff, close to town, private--and did I mention the view. It has a large kitchen, at least 3 decks for sitting in the sun, a pool, a hot tub--just wow all over. I wish we could have stayed longer.
Comfortable beautiful sun rises
The place was clean, comfortable, and well equipped. The mornings by sunrise view magnificent. The road to get to the unit is very tough. Had to use 4wd to climb the road.
Great place! Great location!
Perfect spot, loved the pool and hot tub. the only thing I would improve are the beach chairs, last time I stayed the chairs were reclining ones now they have horrible metal ones that don't recline and weigh a ton. otherwise 5 stars!
Chairs are easy to replace, we will advise our managers to do that.
The biggest things are already great, glad to hear it!
St. John has a thriving economy therefore many homes and condos are being built. Construction is everywhere in the island and can begin anywhere at any time. We are not responsible for construction noise or disruption. We appreciate your understanding in these areas where construction exists. Typically crews begin work between 7:30-8:00 am and 3:30-4:00 pm.
