NEW FOR ISLAND TRAVELERS: There is now a reservation system in place that gets you to and from the San Juan Islands and Victoria. You must plan ahead. We would suggest you make your reservations as soon as you decide when you will be traveling. Google Washington State Ferries/Reservations. Allow 90 minutes prior to departure.
Building our family home overlooking Griffin Bay 30 years ago has been one of our most rewarding and exciting life adventures. At that time, San Juan County had no set back limits on where to build, so we sited our home on the edge of the ocean. Today, it would be impossible to build that close to the water due to set-back regulations. We love living on the island, raising our family in a safe and tranquil environment, and enjoying the quiet beauty that surrounds us. We have been active in community services and volunteer work on the island. David is a retired naval officer, engineer, and real-estate broker and I am a retired United Airlines International flight attendant and teacher. We are originally from Lake Oswego, Oregon.
MaryAnn Anderson purchased this apartment in 1988
Starfish Suite is well located for walks into town and Jackson's Beach. There is always something to do in town, whether your pleasure is fine dining, boutique shopping, visiting our new state of the art Art Institute on Spring Street, going to the Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings, cruising on the Victorian Clipper to Canada, attending our
San Juan Community Theatre, taking a whale~watching cruise, or just mingling with the 'locals' (who sometimes stop in the middle of the sidewalk to play their fiddles!).
Our Private Road overlooks Griffin Bay, the outer islands and the snow-capped Olympic Mountains. We are close to town, yet away from the hustle and bustle of tourists and ferry traffic.
Jackson's Beach is one mile from our home. Beach activities include swimming, beach volley ball, picnicking, sailing, kayaking, wind-surfing and paddle-boarding. We do have private parking for your car with space for a 20 foot boat, which can be launched from nearby Jackson's Beach.
Oh, Mary Ann, we all had a fabulous time! We were so crazy and comfortable in the Starfish Suite. Thanks for all the amenities (and champagne!). We really never wanted to leave the view from the porch but managed to pull away at least once a day for an outing and berry picking!!! That was an added bonus. Beautiful place and your warm, sweet, creative energy infused the place, very good vibes! Thanks for everything.
The Starfish Suite was the perfect place for our girls getaway and mini high school reunion. We never bored of chatting on the deck and watching the amazing scenery, but managed to tear ourselves away to take in most of the sights of the island. Mary Ann was a delight to work with, she repsonded promptly when I had any questions and she welcomed us with champagne chilling in the fridge, as well as brochures for I bet every island activity. Every room in the house was very comfortable and the kitchen was very well stocked. We were thrilled to be within walking distance of Friday Harbor AND to be right on the water. Three of us had never been to the San Juans and they loved it. Have I mentioned that the views from every room in the house were absolutely breathtaking!! We would all return in a heartbeat and highly recommend this lovely vacation spot.
Starfish Suite was just perfect for the week my husband, teenage daughter and I spent in the San Juan Islands. Close enough to walk to Friday Harbor, we could easily split up if some wanted to explore and others wanted to stay home. The suite is very spacious and comfortable, so there were several mornings that we found it hard to leave. What a delight to wake up to a view of the sea! We spent most of our time exploring San Juan Island itself, but did ferry over to Orcas one day with our car. It is super easy to ferry between the islands. We recommend the lavender farm and walking/hiking in American and British Camp. Mary Ann was super helpful and the property is immaculate.
Our vacation was absolutely perfect in the San Juan Islands, but what really made it was the location and positive energy of this fabulous VRBO, Starfish suite! It provided everything we needed to kick back and enjoy being with family, going on adventures, soaking in magnificent views and dining together under the stars. The location was ideal, just one easy mile walk into the quaint town of Friday Harbor; bustling with people, boats, boutiques and fine dining. After we would return from our daily excursions, we would leisurely walk the mile home talking and eating the thumb sized blackberries that lined the quiet lane up to Starfish Suite. Mary Ann and David Anderson, our host, were so thoughtful and welcoming. Mary Ann sent up maps and ferry schedules, along with beautiful photos of what we could look forward to on our journey. She welcomed us with a bottle of chilled champagne to toast the beginning of our grand vacation. The accommodations were so lovely and creative. There were small scenes of nature, the area, local art and crafts sprinkled like fairy dust through the Starfish Suite. The deck were so comfortable for gathering (and napping) and the beds had high quality linens. Everything was clean and well stocked. Mary Ann even took the time and trouble to mail us back a memento we had forgotten to pack! This was my third rental with VRBO, all have been great, but Starfish Suite and Mary Ann surpassed all the other experiences. This really was the perfect place and we brought back cherished memories!
From the start of my search to the very end, our stay at Starfish Suite was perfect. Being first time "islanders", we did not know what to expect. Communication with Mary Ann was very easy and she even anticipated answers to questions I forgot to ask! The location was perfect for the two couples that stayed there. Often we walked the mile to town and left the car behind. When we did leave for a tour during the day, it was with pleasure and peace that we climbed the hill to "our place" on the water. The accommodations are so very pleasant with such attention to detail. The beds were very comfortable and we slept with a light curtain covering the window so that we would awake to the beautiful view of the sun rising on the water. In the evening, deck sitting was often the mode as we watched the eagles dining nearby and listened to the many other birds and their songs and then the beautiful sunsets. Most nights we cooked at home and found the kitchen well equipped with pots, pans, utensils, and a good array of spices. It was a pleasure to cook in a kitchen with a view! Our week in the San Juan Islands was one of the best we have spent. We were able to explore all of San Juan Islands as well as Orca Island. A successful whale watch rounded out the tour with a captivating look at these magnificent creatures. We hope to return someday and would definitely return to Starfish Suites.
We thoroughly enjoyed our recent week at the Starfish Suite. We found it to be clean, spacious, quiet, well stocked, conveniently located, and charmingly decorated. The view from every room was beyond awesome. We indeed watched eagles soar past every day and herons perch on the rocks below us. We even witnessed from our deck (although evidently a rare event) a large group of orcas. The owner is deservedly proud of her lovely home and makes an extra effort to assure the comfort of her guests. I give this property my highest recommendation.
Our stay at the Starfish Suite could not have been better. We drove in from Bozeman with bikes on the back and met up with our friends from Kenya who we hadn't seen in over a year. Our purpose, to bike and sight see the islands while catching up with each other. The location of this suite was perfect; Great view of the bay, and with a neighborhood bald eagle soaring, fishing, and landing across from us on the peak of an abandoned building. Being one mile from the Friday Harbor ferry, we were able to easily bike to the ferry after breakfast to cruise Orcas, Lopez, and Shaw Islands. Being one mile from town also offered the opportunity to walk in and explore town, or have a pint or two at the fantastic pub near the landing! We loved exploring San Juan Island. Our first day, we biked Roche Harbor, explored English Camp, and biked back along the coastal route. We were lucky enough to see a pod of Orcas swimming down the coast with us! Amazing! Afternoon is apparently the best time to see them! We spent another day hiking the trails at American Camp and English Camp. Beautiful hikes into forest and along the bay. Make sure to stop in or hike in) to Westcott Bay and pick up some oysters and clams! Some of the best on the planet!! (BBQ the oysters and steam the clams!) The San Juan Islands have developed a series of trails worth exploring, with another favorite being Turtleback mountain. We biked there, hiked on up, and then continued on beautiful roads up to Eastsound. I could go on and on; it was a wonderful stay full of activity, and always easy to ferry/bike back to our lovely accommodation at the Starfish Suite. We also loved being able to relax and watch great movies/ series on Netflix at night. We spent one week there, and loved every minute!
