Lynn Danaher and Ryan Bennett purchased this apartment in 2010
This is the first secure 2nd floor Loft type apartments built in Friday Harbor. They were designed to creatively utilize the unused open space of the upstairs of the Ace Hardware building. The original tenant of Unit D, was a world class faux artist and this Loft was her portfolio. Plus, this unit has a wonderful balcony for viewing the water, watching the activity of downtown and the farmers market.
This wonderful vacation unit located in the heart of the Historic seaport of Friday Harbor is within easy walking distance to everything, the ferry, the port and whale watch vessels, the airport and the Whale Museum. It is also within a 2 minute walk to many restaurants and shops. Both units are fully sprinklered.
DASHEL SUITE at the Lofts in Historic Downtown
Our two-night stay at the Dashel Suite loft in the historic district of Friday Harbor was just about perfect. The loft has a full, modern kitchen, with a breakfast bar and full-sized appliances. There is silverware for six and plates, bowls, mugs, and other necessities on hand. The grocer, King's, is within walking distance, so anything not available, such as aluminum foil or sandwich bags, can easily be purchased. The living room has a futon, coffee table, a dining room table, and a couple armoires, one of which houses a 32-inch TV. (The reception was not great, but you don't come to the San Juans to watch TV.) There is WiFi, but the Internet didn't work well. The living room has a portable, window-sized air-conditioning unit sitting on a table to help cool the place. It was quite warm during our stay, so the a/c unit and fans that were available did help. Not sure if it's always warm and stuffy, but temps were in the 90s during our stay. There was a small fireplace as well. The beds are very comfortable. The futon slept about as well as any futon, which isn't great, but it sufficed. There is a full-sized closet in the main bedroom, off the living room, which has a queen bed. The other bed, a double, is in a small room, with one side against the wall. There is a bathroom with a sink and commode (and hair dryer) and another bathroom with a sink and a nicely tiled shower. A new washer and dryer are also in this bathroom and were extremely handy. There was laundry detergent available, as well as shampoo and conditioner, plus body wash. The towels for bathing are plentiful and the bathroom with the shower also has a good-sized closet. The unit is faux painted and very attractive. The balcony is large and overlooks Nichols Street, which is pretty quiet. There's a slight view of the water and the ferry terminal. Along with the grocer being close by, so are many restaurants, taverns, bookshops, gift stores, the harbor, the ferry terminal, and so much more. In other words, the entire town is just outside your door. I am very happy we stayed in Friday Harbor as opposed to a more remote part of the island. It's a sweet town with a lot of character as is this loft. Free parking is around back of the unit. Two-hour parking is available curbside as well, so unload and reload your bags here when arriving and departing so you don't have to carry them around the entire building. Note there are stairs to climb, but worth it!
The loft apartment was super cute and clean. So close to everything in downtown Friday Harbor and across the street from the farmers market. Just a few minute walk to the ferry. Would totally stay here again. Just know that if you do, especially if you are bringing your kids and they are internet addicted, the internet was very spotty. Not the fault of the owners, they have had the cable company out several times. Worked for a little bit after unplugging and resetting the modem, but out again later in the evening. Important to know in the event you are staying and planning on working or have a definite need for wi-fi service. Other than that, it was great!
We had a wonderful 2 night stay at this unique little hideaway. It was easy to find, close to the ferry dock and accessible via an easy walk to everything downtown! The artistic decor, the pretty paned glass and patio are nice touches. The bed was so comfortable after our days running around! The kitchen has great supplies for basic cooking needs, and the King Market had excellent produce & food choices. My husband was impressed that they have Hudson bourbon, for what that's worth.
Lynn made every effort to make sure we had a wonderful stay. There was a minor housekeeping issue when we arrived, and Lynn responded immediately and fixed the issue- we later found out that she had friends visiting from Hawaii who also lent a hand to make the unit spic and span! They changed their plans on a dime to take care of us and we really appreciate it- know that you are in excellent hands if you stay! We were able to stash our bags before check in/ after checkout, which allowed us to make the most of our time exploring the island. We would happily return and hope to come back one day!
Re: wifi, we knew the issues coming in from reviews, and Lynn let us know this as well. We tried to log in once and weren't successful, but we came to unplug so didn't try again or miss it! So not really an issue for us but understand that it may be for some.
Running into Lynn & her friends on our first night- she is a steward of the island and we were fortunate to enjoy some wine and learn more about San Juan Island & the film festival here.
Mike's Cafe & Wine Bar- excellent wine, Ursula our server was fabulous. All vegan food, which was delicious-neither of us are vegan and we enjoyed it immensely! So check it out. Wonderful place to unwind.
Susie's Mopeds: we rented electric bikes and rode around to the American Camp, False Bay Drive, the Lavender Farm (try the lemon/lavender sorbet and the lavender honey) & Lime Kiln Park. No whale sightings but we did see porpoises and enjoyed the sun. We were glad for the electric assist- both of us are experienced cyclists but the assist helped immensely up the hills without clips. The staff was helpful & we will probably rent a moped to check out Roche Harbor today before we leave.
Turning Point loop run- ~6 miles- beautiful!
Whale museum- small but great place to learn about the resident orcas!
Thanks so much for a wonderful stay!
Enjoyed waking up with the town, if you like a quiet morning this might not be for you. Coffee on the balcony was a great way to start the day. Fans kept the air moving so it did not get stuffy. Just across the street was a fun consignment store, different tasteful displays every am. A block from wonderful shops and restaurants as well as bike, kayak and activity centers .
Lynn was very accommodating with helping us store our luggage before we were able to check in and once again after check out while we waited for the Ferry to leave. On Saturday morning when we arrived, we were excited to see the farmers market right across the street from the Lofts. We were able to buy ingredients for dinner and then enjoyed a relaxed evening in our apartment and a glass of wine on the balcony while people watching. There was a wine and cheese bar next door and a fully stocked grocery store down the road. Great location, beautifully decorated, we would stay here again.
Great location. Tastefully furnished. Unique
. Needs more curtains to block out the light and better WiFi connection. Other than that it was perfect
Great location right in town. Really enjoyed the balcony with a partial water view - awesome place to sit with a cup of coffee in the morning. Close to ferry landing, restaurants, coffee shops, etc...excellent amenities, very clean - top notch. Loved every minute of our time on San Juan Islands - saw Orcas every day! We would definitely stay here again if we come back to the island - thanks for the great experience!
San Juan Island is the best area to actually see Orca whales in the wild easily during the summer months. Fall and Spring it is a birders paradise with many species passing through en route to their winter home or summer breeding grounds. Many birds reside here in the winter, most beautiful are the Trumpeter Swans and the Great Blue Heron, plus the largest population of Bald Eagles outside of Alaska, reside in the San Juan Islands. We have 3 National Parks on our small beautiful island so there are a lot of opportunities for hiking on the well marked trails.
