Our stay at Uli Kai Hale was delightful! The house was gorgeous, very clean and well stocked with everything we needed. The setting right on the ocean was perfect. It was a great house for two couples as there was plenty of privacy and yet lots of good space to enjoy together as a group. We would all highly recommend the Uli Kai Hale House

Wonderful stay

Both the house and surroundings are gorgeous. The owner has put a lot of love and thought into this home, including a lot of nice little touches like aloe lotion and bocce ball. Location is convenient for exploring the east side. We really felt like we were in paradise and we will remember this stay forever!

Beautiful Home

We had a wonderful time in our first stay on the Hilo side of the Island. The view was incredible and the home was well located for excursions to Hilo, Pahoa and Volcano National Park. The beds were very comfortable and we loved the open feel of the great room. We're missing the sunrise greetings and the boom of the ocean against the cliffs. We were very happy with out stay and we felt that this was an excellent value for the rental price.

Best beach house around

When my husband and I decided to rent a house on the water we weren't expecting such a breathtaking view. Every morning we would watch the sunrise and it was spectacular and even though the weather stated it would be cloudy it was always sunny. The house was wonderful and we would recommend it to anyone and everyone.

This was our first time staying on the Hilo side of the island and in a house. It was all we expected and more. The house had everything we needed and the veiw was amazing. For it being the rainey side, we had beautiful weather. The sunrises each morning were awesome. Great place for two couples. Stayed three nights and would recommend it to others. Not a bad drive to Hilo either.

This was our second stay at Uli Kai Hale and it was every bit as magical as the first. The house is well-appointed, exceptionally clean and the view is spectacular. We spent hours watching the whales in the bay. The nene were coming right up on our deck. We truly enjoy the neighborhood feel of this location. The manager is very responsive to any problems or concerns. We hope to return again next year.kit

Nice property, if you don't mind neighbors

Uli Kai Hale is a beautifully appointed home, first and foremost - it has a lovely layout which makes the most of the surroundings it is in. There are two large and airy bedrooms, a full kitchen with island, dining area and a split lounge.

The house faces east and so receives a lot of early daytime sunshine; so much so we had to wear sunglasses to breakfast a few times. There is a large car port for parking in without fear of rain damage for your car, a small atrium-style garden (replete with very chatty tiny frogs). Everything needed for a comfortable stay is provided including a well-equipped kitchen and ample spare bedding and blankets. Should you wish to travel to a snorkel spot, equipment is on site for that too.

The only real downside to Uli Kai Hale for us, was the proximity to neighbors. It isn't really shown in the shots of the house for obvious reasons, but the neighbours are closer-by on both sides than we have been used to on Hawaiian properties in the past - including in this area. As such, if you don't mind somewhat garrulous company and drifting noise throughout the day and evening then you won't find this a problem. If you prefer a little more privacy and peace, then you may be better looking for something further along the coastline or on one of the less populous islands. Sadly many visitors to this area seem to be confused about Hawaiian property rules, which broadly state a distance of six feet is allowable public walking space along the coast - expect to have people walking right across the lawn oftentimes instead.

So far as location goes, UKH isn't in a bad area, but it's not closeby to much either - it's about a 45 minute drive down to the Puna coast on the south, and about 20-30 minutes to the market depending on traffic. Just something to bear in mind when considering grocery shopping - there isn't really a local store within walking distance; that said - that's not unusual for most places outside of Oahu.

Although the property is disabled-friendly, it may need careful consideration for travellers with young children. The cliff face is quite sudden at the end of the property and isn't fenced away so kids would need supervision.

Owner's Response: First time in over 3 years of handling this home that someone has had any issues with neighbors, please read all the other reviews on this home, nothing has changed. It is a spectacular property and again, if there were any issues with the neighbors i am sure I would have heard. Guess you can't make everyone happy.. There are homes but everyone is respectful and never ever a complaint in the past... YOU will love the Uli Kai Hale
