About Cyndi Harrell
As you probably guessed, we (Cyndi & Troy Harrell) are animal lovers and get frustrated by not having nice places we can bring our fur children. Our Dog & Pony Ranch has been an ideal solution for vacationing with our dogs and horses which is close enough to the Bay Area so we can getaway frequently. We have been active in animal rescue (and also pet-therapy visits to senior centers) and have brought many of our foster dogs here who have found healing from their pasts while running off-leash and learning to become well-behaved family members. Cyndi manages the property and will respond quickly to all inquiries!
Cyndi Harrell purchased this Guest House in 1998
Why Cyndi Harrell chose Pine Grove
We are also avid skiers and outdoor enthusiasts who fell in love with the Jackson area during years of stopping here after skiing at Kirkwood on our way back to the Bay Area (an easy weekend 3 hr drive away from Jackson). After reading the local property pages many times at Mel & Faye’s Diner, we bought this 60-acre property in 1998 as raw land and have greatly enjoyed the many year journey of developing it into our Dog & Pony Ranch. It’s in a great location with large private acreage that is still close to the conveniences of town, close to skiing and many activities, with very usable land including a perfect hilltop house site with stunning sunset views. There have been so many interesting and sometimes frustrating lessons about rural living while adding well, septic, road, power, phone, fencing, pond and recreation features, horse facilities and finally our dream home.
What makes this Guest House unique
We love entertaining friends and family at our Dog & Pony Ranch where we put our best foot/paw/hoof forward to welcome the many people (and their pets!) visiting over the years, first camping and later in our luxury home which we opened to the public for vacation rentals starting in 2013. Many guests have commented on the peaceful quiet and restorative feeling of our country getaway, which we have found very beneficial for stress relief from our high-tech careers. Please come back and visit regularly to see how we continue to improve this special place!

Heaven for Humans & Hounds
My sister and I and our 3 dogs just returned from our stay at Dog & Pony Ranch. The entire guest house was thoughtfully designed for both 2 & 4 legged visitors. There were dog beds, bowls and a doggie door leading from the master bedroom to the fences yard and patio. The kitchen was well equipped and the home beautifully and comfortably furnished.
Cyndi & Troy, the owners were responsive to any questions or needs we had. We took a short hike with them and their lab Cody, then went to the barn area to meet and feed the llamas, horses, donkeys and chickens, then gather freshly laid eggs.
The 60 acres is fenced, which have us leave of mind to let our dogs run free while we hiked. It was heartwarming to see the joy the dogs experienced exploring the ranch.
Thank you Cyndj, Troy & Cody for sharing your beautiful property. I look forward to future stays at Dog & Pony.
Thanks, Chris, for taking the time to share your experience with others! We especially love giving rescued dogs a place where they can safely run and be free :) We look forward to hosting more of your family again in the future!
Relaxing, quiet and a very hospitable stay!
My husband and I along with our two dogs, Gunner and Molly stayed at the ranch for 4 days. Troy was there to welcome us and show us around the fully fenced property! We have a reactive dog who needs slow introductions so Troy and Cody (resident lab) were very accommodating as we all took a hike around the property.
We found everything we would need at the house to stay and not leave for 4 days (we packed food) and they even left some snacks and local wine for us! We were able to participate in the feeding of the ranch animals and were even welcome to bring our dogs in to practice with them. Troy and Cyndi were so gracious to take the time to explain to us the feeding and care of the animals. They also helped us set up the dog agility training and gave us a few pointers!
We loved our stay as we had the time and space to practice with our pups. Troy and Cyndi were so accommodating with any of our needs and the house is really beautifully done! I would most definitely recommend staying here if you want to check out the area, spend time in the hills with your pups, and have a peacefully few days in gold country!
We so enjoyed meeting your wonderful family/pack :) Thanks for sharing the beautiful photos with stunning sunsets and agility fun!
One of our most memorable family trips
We had such a special experience at Harrell's Dog & Pony Ranch. We stayed for three nights and took our three kids, ages 7 (twins) and 13. The guest house that we stayed in was beautiful, comfortable and peaceful, we especially enjoyed the hot tub! Cyndi and Troy were amazing hosts--introducing us to all of the animals, getting us and the kids set up to walk the Llama's on the trails on the property and to horseback ride their lovable horses Amigo and Buddy--we got to ride them in the arena and on the trails. Our 7-year olds also got to ride and cuddle the donkeys. We all spent time holding the baby chicks and petting the chickens as well as helping retrieve the laid eggs every day (and eating them!). The kids got to help with the daily farm chores which included feeding all of the animals by hand and grooming the horses. All in all, one of our most memorable family trips, we definitely plan to go back in the future!
So glad your family enjoyed our vacation property and all its animals :) Thanks for giving others a great overview of what they can experience at the ranch!
We stayed here with our two (almost three) year old twins and our two dogs - one of whom was a very old girl. Cyndi, Troy and Cody were amazing hosts and catered the visit perfectly for our younger children and older dog.
This was an amazing weekend. It was everything we wanted it to be and more. And I will cherish the memories we made that weekend forever, as we lost our dog last night, so this was the last trip we were able to take with her.
Thank you, Harrell family for the wonderful memories.
Dear Emily and family, we’re so sorry to hear about losing your precious Miso :( It’s comforting knowing she had such a special last getaway to the Ranch with her loving pack -- she was such a trooper and let us all know when she needed to go lay down and rest. Our deepest sympathies.
Best vacation ever!
Staying at the Dog & Pony Ranch was the most magical vacation ever. The ranch is picturesque and the perfect place for nature loving (and animal loving) travelers. The beautiful guest house was well maintained and well stocked with the necessities needed for a vacation. Cyndi and Troy are gracious hosts allowing access to this ranch as well as providing insight and recommendations for the area. We have already recommended the Dog and Pony Ranch to friends and family and plan to return as soon as possible!
We were inspired meeting you – not only seeing your loving care of your special needs rescued Lab (deaf and epileptic) but also watching your patient interactions with all of our animals too. It’s such a pleasure meeting so many animal lovers through our vacation rental. We greatly look forward to your next visit!
Spacious, well appointed, quiet and entertaining
The Dog and Pony Ranch was better than expected: Our room had everything we needed, it was very clean, there was a hot tub right outside our front door, and the place was so peaceful and quiet.
Our hosts were wonderful (Troy and Cyndi), showing us around the property, allowing us to feed their horses, llamas, cows and chickens and generally making us feel right at home.they could not have been more gracious, especially considering this is a working ranch.
The location is a 30 minute drive to some of the best wineries in California, not only because the wines were generally pretty great, but the crowds were minimal, prices were reasonable and the scenery was outstanding.
We will be returning here, at some point, hopefully soon.
Glad you made the most of your visit here -- we think the Amador wineries are so much more enjoyable than crowded Napa so glad you got to experience them!
When you’re ready to venture off this wonderful 60-acre property, there is even more to do within a 15-60 minute drive including uncrowded Amador County wineries, winter skiing at Kirkwood, casino and shows at Jackson Rancheria, cave exploration, golf courses, many nearby lakes and rivers, antique shopping, gold and historical sites, and much more. For a list of local activities with highlights of those that are dog-friendly, check out our DogPony.com website or the information folder in our vacation home.
