This unit can be your truly relaxing getaway. Enjoy your morning coffee watching sunrises over the Croatan Sound and relax in the evening watching the sun go down from the private dock or the screened in porch.
A true sportsman’s paradise, the cabin is great for hunting, fishing and water sports of all kinds. You can launch your boat or jet ski at 2 nearby boat ramps, one at the foot of the Umstead Bridge in Mann's Harbor, the other on Mashoes Road. Both will get you to a private dock in 15 minutes, or launch your canoe or kayak right from the house. The bottom is sandy around the dock and beach area so kids will love the swimming or just crabbing to catch the night’s dinner.
Just minutes away from Historic Roanoke Island to the east, where you can enjoy the NC Aquarium, The Lost Colony, Island Farm, The Elizabeth II Historic Site, Civil War sites, Art Galleries and The Christmas Shop, just to mention a few of the best local attractions. To the west wildlife abounds on the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, where you can enjoy kayak tours and miles of nature trails.
5 star dining, in addition to regular fast food and grocery chains are just minutes away. Outlet shopping as well as locally owned unique shops can be found throughout the county. Visit the historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse or take a drive to Corolla to see the wild horses.
It is all at your fingertips from the rustic charm of this cabin in the woods.

Super cute and relaxing
Very relaxing and way off the beaten path. The property is old but does the trick. Enjoyed having a screened in porch and view of the sound.
Peace and tranquility in a very private setting
This is a nice RUSTIC cabin - nothing is level or plumb and the cabin is very leaky! But it will meet all your needs for a vacation home where you should, and likely will, be spending most of your time outside. The queen bed in the master bedroom was surprisingly comfortable. We had a couple of nights of high winds with the temps down in the 30's but stayed toasty warm & cozy with the wood stove - we stayed at the cabin March 15 - 24.
We felt that the location of this cabin was perfect as we much prefer quiet and privacy, which this place provided plenty of. But it is rather centrally located to the Outer Banks. We visited Frisco (south of Cape Hatteras) and Corolla (near the northern most end of the OBX) and all points in between. We primarily prepared all our meals at the cabin but did enjoy dinner at Stripers Bar & Grill two nights after hiking most of the day in the countless nature preserves. We were pleasantly surprised to find that not only did Stripers have Paleo options for us, but we got it for 50% off because we arrived for dinner at 5:00! A pound of steamed shrimp, a pound of steamed crab and a large plate of steamed veggies for less than $40! Wow!
We highly recommend stopping at the WalMart in Kitty Hawk for drinking water if you are coming from the north. We saw that in someone else's review and were grateful that we purchased water for coffee and drinking. We went to the dollar store in Nags Head for TP, paper towels, and a bottle of disinfectant spray for keeping the kitchen and bathroom clean. Cleaning supplies are not provided (that is mentioned in the ad and the contract) but there is a vacuum and a broom/dust pan to help keep things under control.
Now for the negative that kept me from giving this cabin 5 stars: I mentioned the cabin is leaky? Yes, critters are going to get into the cabin regardless of the season. We vacuumed up at least 3 dozen semi-comatose and some very irate wasps that had gained access to the cabin from the gable end windows over the master bedroom and dropped down into the bedroom during our stay. There was a dead mouse in the washing machine! If the cabin was sealed up and a mop and maybe some basic cleaning supplies were provided, to us this is an easy 5 star vacation spot. If you are picky or easily freaked out by mother nature gaining access to the interior of where you are staying, pay twice as much and go somewhere else. But you will be missing out in our opinion! We LOVED our stay!!!
Fantastic view and awesome weather
Third times a charm. The previous two times we stayed at this cabin we had horrible weather (a Nor'Easter and torrential rains and flooding). We had a week of sunny 85* weather this time, and really got to enjoy the cabin, dock and sunrise. The cabin was clean and comfortable.
My parents fished off the dock and caught 4 fish. We attended the Bluegrass Festival in Manteo and had an all around good time.
Nice but still needs repairs from hurricane Matthew.
Owner has a very busy work schedule, but has people who can take care of problems. We had nothing if not the best responses to minor issues.
The rustic cottage is is in a remote, private, quiet area adjacent to the National Wildlife Refuge and has it’s share of wildlife. We could see (with a GOOD pair of binoculars) 2 pair of Bald Eagles who hung out in the trees all day, fishing. Lots of birds. It’s on a harbor, not on the ocean, so there are no breakers to hear unless a hurricane is passing by... I grew up going to the family cottage on a bay, so I am used to no breakers. The dock repairs had not been completed so we had to use the neighbor’s dock. High tide made that a little difficult to get to.
The cupboards are well stocked with spices dishes, pots and pans, silverware, etc. Beds were comfortable and clean. Better than most motels.
If you like privacy, this is the place. If you want to be close to the action, it isn’t. The drive into Manteo is about 20 minutes.
Where we live, we have to drive 1 - 2 hours to get to anything so we’re used to driving. The trips to Corolla. Kill Devil Hills and Cape Hatteras were not out of the ordinary for us.
Such an amazing experience
I've been to the outer banks almost every year of my life and have stayed places anywhere from Kitty Hawk and Nags Head to the mainland in Grandy on Walnut Island. I've never had a bad vacation here however I didn't know what I was missing til I stayed at this Cabin in the Woods. Being far enough away from the hustle and bustle to enjoy solitude was truly special yet we were close enough to be 15 minutes from any of the things we love to do in Manteo. I can truly say this is the best vacation location I've ever had.
Initially I was really worried about the bugs as we are essentially on a protected wetland next to the Alligator River Nature Preserve however they were only bad one night here! We didn't need to use bug spray and were able to sit out on the deck watching the sound all but one night. The stars were like I've never seen before since we are so far away from big city lights.
Also the fact there is no fee for pets is nearly unheard of. We were able to bring our big dog and he loved swimming in the sound and chasing sticks for hours. We were also happy to find many restaurants and shops that we could bring him to even as an 85lb dog! Ortegaz in Manteo comes to mind but there were many others. He is one happy dog and might be as pumped as his owners to be here.
If I had any issue it would be with the beds. They were a bit stiff but honestly it's hard to find anywhere that has the perfect bed when on vacation so I'm used to that and it was a very small price to pay for the wonderful experience we had here.
Thanks to Darrell for such a great price for a great location. I've got to say for all the places I've stayed I've never been to the same place twice but we are already planning to return here for next year! If you enjoy wildlife and being away from it all you literally can't go wrong with this place. We love it!
Get away from it all!!!!!!!!!
Great property, excellent location, just far enough away from everything to feel like your in the middle of no where at the same time as being within driving distance of all main attractions. Close to the wildlife refuge, and we saw 8 black bears! Our power went out on the last night, however we received excellent communication with the property manager. He answered my call & the problem was quickly resolved. I would recommend heavy bug spray, we are used to being in the woods so we use 40 Deet Lotion. Bugs get heavy at night, but we were prepared.
3 areas to launch a boat takes 5 minutes to bring your boat to the dock. Little ones are able to crab as well with crab pots you are able to use. Go-carts and other rides are 10 minutes from the cabin the fishing is great and hunting as well.
