About Maxine Lavitt
Chris rebuilt the main house in 1989 after Hurricane Hugo blew it down. And then he met me. We married in 1995. We share a love of the islands and enjoy showing it off to friends and family.
Maxine Lavitt purchased this Cottage in 1989
Why Maxine Lavitt chose Red Hook
The view and the breeze are something I never get tired of. Not even after all these years. It would be hard for us to ever move from here. The parrots and hummingbirds are personal friends.
What makes this Cottage unique
We are close to everything but feel a million miles away when we reach the top of the hill. New addition to the bedroom, a 53" TV so you can watch your favorite shows with the AC on in perfect conditions. There is also a TV in the living room. You can watch two shows at once.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Red Hook Charm
Great location to access the beaches and snorkeling on St Thomas, as well as St John and BVI, which we did 3 times this week. View of the marina and bay and is lovely. Clean and well stocked rental but most important was the fantastic hospitality of Max. Perfect for two people with a rental car (which I think is a must for this locale). This is a fun place to come back to ...in a heartbeat! Dog lovers beware, Louie, may steal your heart 💜!!
Great weekend getaway
Property is just as advertised. Great view of the surrounding areas.
The best on the island! Max was such a gracious host, and her attention to detail makes this cottage so warm and friendly ! I felt like I was in a gorgeous movie set! Yes, the views and location are the best, no doubt, but the sense of relaxation you feel when your up at the top is one I will remember for many years to come. I loved the bedroom - watching the sunrise over the ocean and the moon at night with a warm breeze blowing in was my favorite part. It has it all hands down!! I’m not sure I’ve ever felt so comfy on a stay . Loved every minute of it! Thank you Max... you made our visit to the island so memorable❤️❤️❤️❤️
The Owners did not handle the ROACH infestation professionally...
I expected insects, it's the Caribbean and have been many times, but I have never experienced roaches. When I brought the roach issue to the owner's attention-my friend had one crawl on her while sleeping- the owner told me "they come in for a drink sometimes" (don't insult my intelligence) and upon requesting an exterminator was told by text" I could leave and she'd refund the balance of my money"...this was during spring break, as if I would have been able to find accommodations. The stay became a ritual of checking the kitchen ceilings upon returning at night and nights of uneasy sleep worried about roaches crawling on Us. An exterminator was sent 3 days before We left and the owner offered me a bottle of wine(compared to the thousands I spent to stay there) for my inconvenience. I overlooked issues, because I understood that it is someones home and not a major corporation, but there is still a standard of which the customer paid for that needs to be maintained. I never write reviews, but felt it necessary after the way the I was handled by Max and her Husband. I have to be honest and say that the cottage aside from the roaches and lack of customer service was well equipped and had a beautiful view. The parking situation was difficult due to other renters with cars.
I was expecting this review from Stephanie.
She was not happy and I wanted her to have a great vacation so I did offer her a refund as she seemed to not like anything and I felt that it was her vacation and she should not be unhappy be able to relax and not be stressed. I never offer refunds but felt that I should as she seemed to not like anything.
My exterminator was away fighting cancer but sent someone as soon as he could and I have to say that after a spray there are usually dead bug on the floor. There were none.
We do have "mahogany birds" that do fly in and they get your attention but they are few. There was no infestation
I am sorry that she did not get the vacation she wanted but I tried to make her happy.
A Tropical Vacation Retreat
St. Thomas and St. John were hit hard by two category 5 hurricanes in 2017. The damage was extensive.
The Cottage at Lion’s Gate does not look it. It looks like it was made many years ago and taken care of by people who love it. Everything is clean, tidy and in great shape.
We used the veranda a lot. Ate our meals, had cocktails and watched the harbor on it. The view is great.
The kitchen had all the tools, pots, pans and sharp knives for my wife who likes to cook.
The cottage would be great for a honeymoon, or any one wanting a relaxing vacation.
Max is a great person. We came , stayed at her cottage, went on a cruise with her, and left a friend.
Hope to be back!
What a view !
Such a cozy cottage ! The view is unbelievable! We ate breakfast out there everyday and enjoyed a cocktail in the evening out there as well . Loved that we could open place all up and let the nice breeze in . The owner was great help and place has all the basics you need ! Loved the big shower ! Very close walk down the hill to restaurants, bars, grocery and redhook ferry. Little bit of a walk back up but not terrible . I even did in sandals and we didnt mind working off the calories . A cab took us up our last night for few dollars per person . We did not have rental car but cab fares were reasonable to and from airport, beaches and restaurants. Would definitely stay again ! Thanks
Red Hook, on the East end of St. Thomas, is the perfect place to stay. Just down the hill from Lion's Gate is the ferry terminal. In 15 minutes you can be across Pillsbury Sound and in the National Park on St. John. A 40 minute ride takes you to Tortola, in the BVI. Bring your passports for this. The Baths at Virgin Gorda are spectacular with huge boulders that look like a giant tossed them up in the air and they landed in the ocean creating The Baths.
American Yacht Harbor is right at the bottom of our hill. A 2 minute car ride or five minute walk. All the day sail boats and fishing boats leave from here.
Red Hook also has an active night life. Everything from a cold beer and hot pizza to fine dining. Shops to explore and the docks are filled with yachts to dream about.
