Once beautiful, but falling into disrepair
The location near Dupont Circle is the only outstanding feature of this studio apartment. From the infrastructure (a three-part view window, large fridge, generous oven & gas cooktop), it is clear this was once an upscale apartment, but the owner has let it run down badly. The check-in process was chaos. We never received check in information from the owner, and had to track it down with 3 requests the day before our arrival. We then were granted an early check-in which we appreciated, but when we let ourselves in with the lock box key, we found used bed linens, towels, unwashed dishes, and trash. We let the owner know, and we agreed to come back after 4 pm, even though the VBRO site indicates 3 pm. When we returned, the apartment was still the same. The owner refused to take my phone call, but did correspond by text messages. After the place was cleaned, we had to call again to ask for a fitted bedsheet, which had been overlooked. The utensils in the drawers still had food bits on them; we washed everything before use. The photos shown on the VBRO site are not current. The place now has large stains on the carpets, windowsills and walls, holes in the plaster, a broken closet door just leaning against the frame, and layers of grime on doors and most horizontal surfaces. I wonder if the owner ever sets foot in the apartment? The amount we paid for cleaning is clearly not translating into actual hours of effort. It's sad to see a once lovely place being run hard into the ground. More information on how to run the air conditioning would have been welcome as well; Washington DD in the summer is hot, and for reasons that escape us, the system had been turned off not only at the wall thermostat, but also on the cooler at a location hidden behind a flat panel. We had a few warm evenings, with only one window that can be opened, but once the system was working, it was fine. We wouldn't come back unless the apartment was under new management.
6 nights of little sleep
The apartment is cute, but poorly maintained. The bathtub and bathroom sink continued to drain very slowly even after the manager put draino in them. We had to brush our teeth in the kitchen. The heat didn't work and we had come in from the cold and wet thinking we could heat up the space a little. The heater spew icy air just like the cooler. Plus I think an additional draft came from the cracked bay window. It would have been nice to have had more then one set of towels per person. No dry towel to wrap wet hair after shower. The mattress on both the sleeper sofa and bed need replacing.....springs very poky! The location of building is good and a quiet building....but lots of noise from the street at night. Personally I have trouble sleeping in the light and at night the lights from streetlights and cars was bright even through closed blinds. Lastly, I thought the apartment looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months.....spiderwebs and dust, black mold on cells and dirt all around the edges and corners of the rooms. Oh and I couldn't get the lock box open...either when we arrived or when I left. I had to leave the key in the unit for the manager.
Wonderful Historic District Apartment
What a wonderful third-floor apartment in a beautiful historic district over looking Connecticut Ave just blocks north of the Dupont Circle Metro Station. Terrific location near bus and rail stops. We highly recommend getting a Metro Pass for getting around the city. Lots of good restaurants, bars, cafés, coffee shops and shopping nearby. And with so many restaurant options in the neighborhood, we did not use our kitchen at all. We found the wifi connection to be a bit slow, but using Google Maps on your phone was a breeze to help navigate around the area. We would highly recommend this property to anyone and we will certainly consider staying here again in the future.
Perfect location, good size. But damp & funny smell in bathroom.
Granted we were there during a rainy 4 days. But the 3rd floor apartment was damp. The ground floor had big dehumidifiers running continuously. There was a strange smell in the bathroom. Otherwise, the studio apartment was very nice, great location, very nice kitchen, granite counters, good sized fridge, etc. Bed mattress was extremely firm. Sofa bed was very soft. Quite clean. Very quiet.
Perfect in D.C.
This apartment in the Kalorama Heights neborhood near DuPont Circle is awesome!
Layla & Matt are great hosts with a clean and safe space. I will plan to stay there again when back in D.C. and as a frequent renter of Home Away properties I highly recommend this apartment!
