Tradewinds is set up with luxurious main house - kempas hardwood floors, cherry cabinets in main kitchen. Vaulted ceilings in spacious great room with large flatscreen TV. Large master bedroom with king bed. Guest house with 1 large suite and 1 smaller - both with kitchenettes and TV. Wifi throughout.
Beautiful inground pool in private walled in yard.
Located just off the busy Alii Dr. on private road with controlled access. 5 acre mango farm next door.
I'm a semi-retired Canadian farmer and have been coming to the Big Island regularly since 2005. My family and I enjoy the break from winter and all the great activities so nearby.
My main hobby here is training and competing in triathlons but also enjoy the sightseeing activities, hiking, dining,watersports,etc.

We chose this property because it has the feel of living in the country (again, I'm a farmer) - the large lots,mango farm next door, no street lights, so quiet - yet is so close to all the city life - shopping,dining,beaches,movie theatre.
This property is unique for it's country feel in an urban setting.
It also has the feel of a resort with the pool surrounded by the main house on one side and 2 guest suites on the other - perfect for 3-5 couples or extended families (keep the kids or in-laws in the guest suites to keep everyone happy.)
My wife and I travel each January to the big island to avoid the PNW winters weather for a few weeks. Off the course of numerous trips we have stayed at all sorts of vacation homes.
We were very satisfied with this home.
Pros: Great outdoor kitchen area, near the pool. We ate and hung out in this area most of the time if we were home.
Plenty of space. With 3 large bedrooms and 4.5 baths there was plenty of room for our group of 10.
Well stocked. Beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers, beach toys for the kids. We didn't need to buy a thing for the beach. Huge plus for us.
Kitchen was also stocked. Lots of spices, hot sauce, cooking basics.
HD TV with lots of channels. No one admits that they want to watch a little tv with the weather so nice but we were able to catch a few NBA games and some movies.
Lastly Peter the owner is "Johnny on the spot". If we had a question or a need he was available within a few minutes in the phone and came by to help when needed. Great to have him as an asset.
Cons: Be prepared that the 4th bedroom is not private, but on a plus
side the bed is comfortable.
Overall very nice unit. We would rent here again.
A+ stay! This home is perfectly located away from traffic and still close enough to walk to the Magic Sands beach. We will stay again. Peter was very responsive and accommodating. We rented a boat and explored Captain Cook's bay with snorkeling and dolphin watching. We also spent 2 days at the most beautiful beach in Kona (I forget the name, but 2 exits past the airport) and did the night Manta Ray dive / snorkel. We don't have great recommendations for dinners because we mostly ate at the home on the deck overlooking the ocean. We had 6 adults and 3 kids and it was perfect for us. Stay here!
We stayed there over Christmas and New Years with 6 adults and 3 small children. First time on the island and the house suited us well. Great location - a short drive south of Kona and other markets, a 5-10 minute walk to White Sands beach. The house is off a private, gated drive which adds to privacy, peace and quiet. Surrounded by green views, all we heard was birds. Slight view of the ocean from the lanai.
Living room and kitchen area were large and comfortable. Master suite was also incredible with large bathroom. We spent most of the time around the pool, with a nice outdoor eating area and outdoor kitchen were we stored drinks and food for grilling. Great pool and trees/landscaping all around. There is also a bathroom in adjacent to that outdoor area with a nice shower.
Also supplied were pool and beach toys, apple TV which saved the day for some netflix for the kids, wifi, air conditioning units, a 'pack n play' and a crib, top notch appliances, fold out sofas, plenty of linens and towels, etc.
Some downsides. The spare room in the main house, that we converted to a 4th bedroom with a queen, isn't as desirable. It's directly across from the front entrance and has a curtain for a door. The wifi is housed here and our guest complained a bit about a loud buzzing noise. The guest suites, which are on the other side of the house, are great for small families, but they are on the second floor with a tile, outdoor staircase, something to keep in mind if you have little ones (one of the toddlers in our group had a nasty spill). Also the bathrooms in those suites aren't as nice, particularly the tubs, with ratty shower curtains, plastic bath tubs, and only one stopper that we had to share between the two. Also, signage advised not to use the refrigerators in those suites to save energy as a group, which I can understand, but takes away the appeal a bit as a stand-alone suite to escape with kids. The pool was a bit chilly, colder than the ocean, as it's in the shade all day and isn't heated. And maybe we are city-slickers, but there were a fair amount of dead cockroaches about, and we saw some rodents running about. I guess that's part of being in what felt like the countryside.
Despite those gripes I still gave it 5 stars and definitely recommend it. Probably the best rental house I've stayed in. The owner was attentive, quick on email, eager to help. And, again, great house in a great location.
We loved the house. The location was great, a short walk to the beach or a short drive into town. We had 8 adults and 3 children and there was plenty of room for all of us. We loved being as we said ( in the jungle) very private and surrounded by nature. The pool was a hit with the kids. Peter was great with what ever questions we had Peter answered them right away and was always helpful. We were sorry to leave. Thank you again Peter for your hospitality. Aloha
I really would like to give this house 4.5 stars. We were a family of 9 with 3 children ages 3 to 10. The large great room upstairs was a good gathering place as was the lovely pool and breezeway. The house is located on a quiet road which was a nice break from busy Kailua but very convenient to stores and beaches. There were plenty of beach towels and pool toys which were used heavily by our group. Peter, the owner, was extremely responsive to all my questions and very flexible with our checking in and checking out times to fit our flight schedules. Peter recommended Jackie Rey's for our anniversary dinner and we were not disappointed at all. Another good restaurant that one of the couples enjoyed was Holuakoa Gardens and Cafe. The living area provided beautiful views of the sunset, but we really liked to make the 10 minute walk down to the nearest beach to get the best view. We also enjoyed the fruit from the trees on the property.
My only suggestions are:
1) provide blinds on western windows upstairs for those who have to sleep on pull-out couch.
2) some sort of screens on upstairs doors so we can keep them open more often while avoiding flies inside (maybe this is more of a problem in the summer)
3) some plastic plates and cups for the little ones
4) more small drink glasses
I would definitely recommend this house as long as you can take the steps to the living and kitchen areas. No one in our group (ages 3 - 75) had any problem with these steps.
Good: the property has a good layout for large groups! Two kitchens is great. Ample parking space.
Not so good: plumbing in bathrooms need to be updated. The bathrooms in the additional guesthouse are old and the plumbing needs to be improved. The bathtub off my son's bedroom didn't drain so they couldn't use the shower facilities for half of our rental time. The standing water sitting in the half filled tub for four days was gross. The owner said he couldn't secure plumbing services until the following week. I washed the upstairs windows because they were so bad. I know that VOG is a problem in the Kona area, but the amount of rent one pays to use the property should cover a quick window wash between rentals
Home is located only 500 yards (450 metres) from Alii dr. in a quiet gated community. Although located centrally in Kona, it feels like you're in the country - very private. Homes and resorts on Alii which is where most are located, have a lot noise from traffic 24/7. Close to beaches, shopping, golf, deep sea fishing and a must is the volcanoes.
