About Peter Buehlow

I'm a semi-retired Canadian farmer and have been coming to the Big Island regularly since 2005. My family and I enjoy the break from winter and all the great activities so nearby.

My main hobby here is training and competing in triathlons but also enjoy the sightseeing activities, hiking, dining, watersports, etc.

Peter Buehlow purchased this house in 2013

Why Peter Buehlow chose Kona Coast

We chose this property because it has the feel of living in the country (again, I'm a farmer) - the large lots, mango farm next door, no street lights, so quiet - yet is so close to all the city life - shopping, dining, beaches, movie theatre.

What makes this house unique

This property is unique for it's country feel in an urban setting.

It also has the feel of a resort with the pool surrounded by the main house on one side and 2 guest suites on the other - perfect for 3-5 couples or extended families (keep the kids or in-laws in the guest suites to keep everyone happy.)

A beautifully located property and very responsive owner.

I really would like to give this house 4.5 stars. We were a family of 9 with 3 children ages 3 to 10. The large great room upstairs was a good gathering place as was the lovely pool and breezeway. The house is located on a quiet road which was a nice break from busy Kailua but very convenient to stores and beaches. There were plenty of beach towels and pool toys which were used heavily by our group. Peter, the owner, was extremely responsive to all my questions and very flexible with our checking in and checking out times to fit our flight schedules. Peter recommended Jackie Rey's for our anniversary dinner and we were not disappointed at all. Another good restaurant that one of the couples enjoyed was Holuakoa Gardens and Cafe. The living area provided beautiful views of the sunset, but we really liked to make the 10 minute walk down to the nearest beach to get the best view. We also enjoyed the fruit from the trees on the property.

My only suggestions are:

1) provide blinds on western windows upstairs for those who have to sleep on pull-out couch.

2) some sort of screens on upstairs doors so we can keep them open more often while avoiding flies inside (maybe this is more of a problem in the summer)

3) some plastic plates and cups for the little ones

4) more small drink glasses

I would definitely recommend this house as long as you can take the steps to the living and kitchen areas. No one in our group (ages 3 - 75) had any problem with these steps.

Nice layout

  • 4 of 5

Good: the property has a good layout for large groups! Two kitchens is great. Ample parking space.

Not so good: plumbing in bathrooms need to be updated. The bathrooms in the additional guesthouse are old and the plumbing needs to be improved. The bathtub off my son's bedroom didn't drain so they couldn't use the shower facilities for half of our rental time. The standing water sitting in the half filled tub for four days was gross. The owner said he couldn't secure plumbing services until the following week. I washed the upstairs windows because they were so bad. I know that VOG is a problem in the Kona area, but the amount of rent one pays to use the property should cover a quick window wash between rentals

Owner's Response: I knew these guests might be a challenge. I received an email immediately after their arrival complaining of rotten mangoes in the kitchen. In fact, they were fresh papayas I had picked that morning as a welcome. When I went to look at the plugged drain, the son took me aside and admitted he had broken the handle. He told me they were having a great time and apologized for this reviewer.

Great home while in Kona!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in this house! The photos accurately depict the house. There was plenty of space for the 7 adults in our party. The kitchen area and living room are fabulous. We cooked a lot, and enjoyed the large kitchen as well as the 2nd kitchen with grill outside. The rooms were comfy, although be prepared that the "den" room may be a bit noisy because there is not a door, and so all the upstairs noise is easily transmitted. Do beware that there are also some friendly geckos in the house, but they are friendly. The location was great: 10 min walk to Magic White Sands Beach, easy 10 min drive into downtown Kailua, 10 min drive to the Safeway, and about 30 min from Kona Internat'l Airport. Also, about a 3 min drive from Da Poke Shack! The host was great and left everything clean and tidy when we arrived. The air conditioning is a PLUS as well, very powerful, and the weather was pretty warm in May. The outdoor patio area was great for morning breakfasts. Overall, we had a wonderful time, and hope to be back soon!

Ideal Vacation Home!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved this beautiful home! It was perfect for our family reunion, with ample gathering space (beautiful patio for morning Kona coffee) and plenty of privacy for couples and smaller family units. The location was ideal for us, far enough from Ali'i drive that it was quiet and peaceful, but close enough to easily access beaches and markets. The photos and descriptions were very accurate and honest. Magic Sands Beach was only 10 minutes, easy walk, and provided incredible sunset experiences (every night was different). The pool was perfect for our kids, they never got tired of it, and there were plenty of pool toys available for them to use. The beds were comfortable, and even the sheets were high quality and heavenly soft. The owner was prompt in replying to my questions and refunded our damage deposit only 1 day after we left.

I highly recommend this place, and fully intend to rent it again at some point in the future.

Wonderful villa for party of 9!

  • 4 of 5

This is a wonderful place to stay! It truly is a quiet, private location with the bustle of Kona just minutes away. We had 4 couples plus our little grand-daughter and everyone had their own space. The property was clean and well maintained. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole property. The master bedroom and bath are amazing. The pool was clean and lovely. The owner was a gracious host. There was one small issue with the lanai looking over the pool and he sent somebody over right away to address it. He even provided a crib for the 2 year old. We would stay here again and recommend this property to our friends. Thank-you for your hospitality!

Really nice place comfortable for up to 8-9 people

  • 4 of 5

The layout of this property is really cool for larger parties. We were 3 couples and two singles. There are two separate guest houses across the pool with their own bed, bath and shower. The master in the big house obviously has a wonderful bathroom. The den has also been made into a bedroom but the closet bathrooms would be either upstairs or the bath in the breezeway. There are a lot of stairs in this house which is something to think about if one of your party is elderly. The livingroom in the big house with the main kitchen is up steep stairs. There is also a beautiful patio that seats 8 and that is where we did all of our eating (it's the only big table in the living area.) You can see the ocean from here and hear it if the waves are big enough. The pool was cold but who goes to Hawaii to swim in a pool? And kids would probably think it was warm enough. The house is about .4 mile off Ali'i drive in a gated community. It's a beautiful setting but if you go during a busy season you may wish you had stayed somewhere a little farther away from everything. Traffic was crazy backed up on Ali'i just about always. The few minor hitches we encountered were immediately addressed by the owner (despite happening in the middle of the night and on Christmas!) This is a beautiful property and perfect for a large group. We highly recommend this property.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review Krista. I think for elderly people not comfortable with stairs, they could use one of the 2 bedrooms in the main house which are wheelchair accessible. They could also use the outdoor Kitchen and eat in the portico. That being said, I don't advertise my house as wheelchair accessible. As for traffic, your stay - at Christmas, is by far the busiest time of year in Kona, with Ironman Week ( Early October) also quite busy. As for the pool - I agree, it gets a little cool in winter - I plan on adding a solar heater which would be used from Nov. - Feb. along with a switch from chlorine to salt water. Aloha, Peter.

Home is located only 500 yards (450 metres) from Alii dr. in a quiet gated community. Although located centrally in Kona, it feels like you're in the country - very private. Homes and resorts on Alii which is where most are located, have a lot noise from traffic 24/7. Close to beaches, shopping, golf, deep sea fishing and a must is the volcanoes.
