About Mike & Debbie Wood

We are an active couple in our fifties. Mike has an aviation background and Debbie has a medical background. Debbie is also a Doterra Wellness Advocate.

After looking all over, we decided Trinidad was the best place in the world to live. The ocean views can't be beat. Trinidad is always cool and has world class views. It's small and uncrowded with no traffic, yet just big enough to have a grocery store and restaurants. And there's an airport only ten minutes away. So, after vacationing here for ten years we decided to retire here. We moved to Trinidad in 2010 and in 2012 we purchased an oceanfront property with a guest house.

The Oceanfront Chalet is family owned and managed. The owners are on site in the adjacent house to the south. Basically we are there for you if you need us, otherwise we keep to ourselves.

This is located on historic Stagecoach Rd among private estates that are 5 - 10 acres in size. It is not on a main road and there are no subdivisions. There is no freeway noise. So it is usually very quiet (other than the ocean noise) and does not have the packed in neighbors that the town has. Our 10 acres estate has awesome, panoramic ocean views along with the constant roar of the ocean. Our private drive has gated access and the Chalet is about 600 feet in from Stagecoach road (and completely hidden from the road).

Great house, great location, and great host. The house itself is a "vista point". Mike and Debbie provide everything you need, comfortable beds, great wine, hot tub, private beach and best of all "Wake up and see the ocean at first!". If you plan to go to redwood parks you should not miss this place.

  • Two full baths. All linens, towels, beach towels, shampoo, soap, etc provided. Laundry detergent is provided. The master bathroom was remodeled in 2014 and is completely new except for the old growth redwood flooring. This home has a tankless instant hot water heater that will supply unlimited hot water. So if you have a large group there is no need to worry about running out of water during showers.

Notes:
About once a month the propane truck comes by all properties in Trinidad to refill propane tanks. This takes about 20 minutes. The 140 yard path to the Chalet’s private beach is down a steep bluff trail and depending on one’s fitness level, it may be too difficult for some to make this hike. Beach trail use is only recommended when the trail is dry. (Note: For those that cannot make it down the trail there are two drive up beaches within three miles) Owners are in the large house to the southwest of the Chalet and can provide free airport transfers, show you where to find berries, answer questions about the area or address any other concerns you may have.

The Perfect Lost Coast Escape

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Oceanfront Chalet. The accommodations were very comfortable and our kids loved sleeping in the loft. The view of the Pacific Ocean, framed by Whale Head, and punctuated by Shark Tooth, was breathtaking in both sun & fog. We felt like we were staying in a high-end resort. When we arrived there was a welcome basket of s'mores, chocolates on the pillows, a commerative ornament to take home, and a cheese platter in the fridge. The location was also ideal since it gave us easy access to reach Eureka & the airport to the south & Redwood National Park to the north. We'll definitely be returning to the Oceanfront Chalet on our next trip to the Lost Coast.

Perfect!

When we drove down the driveway to the house, all four of us (including our teenagers) gasped out loud at the view of the ocean. It's so beautiful and peaceful to watch the waves on the rocks. We went down to the shore at low tide (my son's favorite part of our stay), scrambled over rocks and saw sea stars and purple sea urchins and one beautiful blue sea anemone, and an amazing waterfall (which my son climbed up, of course!). All this just at your doorstep. Mike, the owner, was super nice and friendly, came over and showed us how everything works. He and his son were working to replace a bit of the stairway down the cliff that had gotten washed away. What a tough job! Other than that, we didn't see him or his family. We felt like we were alone at the sea, but it was comforting to know he was only a text away if we needed help with something.

Prairie Creek State Park(part of Redwoods National Park) is only a half hour beautiful drive to the north. We hiked a three mile loop that took us over 4 hours because we kept stopping in amazement at what we were seeing.

One of the best parts of this house is that when you sign the paperwork, Mike sends you a 14 page guide to the area - hiking, restaurants, wineries, beaches. It's a very helpful guide.

And then there's the hot tub! It was so great after hiking to come back and sit in the hot tub on the deck and listen to and watch the ocean.

I would recommend this house to any friends looking for a great place to stay.

Great host, awesome place, wonder views.

Went for a girls trip with my mom and 2 friends.

Host Debbie and Mike are nice laid back people with attention to detail. Thay provided us little presents around the house and even mailed me back a changer i had left there.

I enjoyed the adventurous journey down to their private beach and was rewarded by a steller panoramic view.

Dont miss seeing the giant redwoods, wine tasting, marine lab and the clam chowder.

So relaxing! Fun features for the whole family

We loved this place so much! The view was truly amazing. We had so much fun collecting agate, looking at starfish, and visiting the nearby redwood parks. My boys loved that loft and there were so many convenient, hospitable touches. We were so sad to leave!!!

Charming

All the little details made our stay perfect!!! The location to town and National Park were exactly what we were looking for. The kids loved the loft. I only wish we had more then two nights here.

Local attractions: Within a short drive, you have access to many scenic attractions including Trinidad Head Trail, the HSU Marine Lab, Agate Beach, Redwood National Park, Prairie Creek State Park and Fern Canyon with its herds of Roosevelt elk.

Other activities include: exploring Humboldt State University and Arcata, Old Town Eureka and the Eureka Waterfront, the Victorian Village of Ferndale, and the College of the Redwoods. Charter boats are available for fishing, sightseeing and whale watching excursions (there is good whale watching directly from the house). Trinidad harbor also offers excellent kayaking. The Trinity, Klamath, Eel and Mad Rivers offer world class trout, steelhead and salmon fishing as well as river rafting and kayaking.

Excellent restaurants abound in Trinidad, Arcata, and Eureka. Our personal favorites include The Larrupin Cafe, Seascape, Alice's and The Lost Coast Brewery and Cafe. For surfers, Trinidad beaches are the preferred location in Humboldt county. In winter, Horse mountain provides access for cross country skiing and snow fun less than an hour away.

Wine tasting can be found at Bergeron Winery & Moonstone Crossing winery in downtown Trinidad. Tide pooling, Bird Watching, Marine Mammals, Art Galleries, Gift Shops, Trinidad Museum, Sailing, Windsurfing, Camping, Horseback Riding, Cher-Ae Heights Casino, Fishing, Crabbing, Clamming, Beach combing, Cycling, Rock Climbing, Swimming and Agate Hunting are other activities to choose from. For golfers, there are two courses within a 30 minute radius.

If the reservation is cancelled 60 or more days prior to arrival, you will receive a full refund of any funds paid minus a cancellation fee of $50. If the reservation is cancelled within 60 days prior to arrival, the full rent paid will be forfeited unless the unit is re-rented.

The Chalet and premises are only rented to the people listed in the rental agreement. Additional people beyond those listed in the rental agreement that are brought onto the property will be charged a fee of $25 per person per day, so long as they are declared prior to arrival. This includes visitors, stoppers-by, drivers-thru, friends, etc. You must call or text the owners prior to bringing additional persons on site. Undeclared persons brought onto the property will be charged a fee of $50 per person per day.


Local regulations and our insurance company require us to have a signed rental agreement in place prior to renting to anyone. We will email you a copy of the rental agreement. After you've had a chance to fill it out and sign it, please scan and send it back. After we have received the signed rental agreement, your reservation is confirmed. Following that, you will receive a fifteen page "trip planning" email with your personal door code, detailed directions and comprehensive information on the Chalet and the area.
