About sutton

3rd generation owner of our family's Catalina Island house. Great granddad, granddad and father all grew up in Avalon. I was fortunate to spend my childhood summers here as well.

We love this little gem and so will you!

Oven Broken

  • 3 of 5

The oven was broken and there is no big cook pan....

Owner's Response: Joyce, The oven is not broken, though the pilot light many have been out. Our property manager lives downstairs and could have been asked to fix this when you first discovered it. It's VERY easy to relight the pilot light. And at the very least, instead of writing a poor review based on a very easily fixed issue, you could have reached out to us to let us know. No one else has complained about the oven not working. With regard to not having a large enough cooking pan, Safeway sells aluminum one-use pans, they're cheap. - Owner

Awesome Catalina Cabin

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing stay here. The description of 'cozy and charming' is spot on. The house is just off the main ave and has a great overlook view of the bay. I would definitely stay here again when visiting again.

Charming, Cozy Little House!

  • 4 of 5

We loved the location and ambiance of this quaint, little getaway. It boasted a nice deck with views of the ocean & Avalon. The property owner was very accommodating. That said, it was a little chilly at night and even with the thermostat turned to high, there was still cool air blowing out of the vents. Also, the burners on the stove did not light and we couldn't locate a lighter. The windows and deck area were a little bit dirty, but nothing too bad. Overall, we loved the charming decor and amenities and would stay here again and recommend it to friends.

Owner's Response: Our property manager lives in the apartment below the house and can resolve any of the heat problems on the fly - there is a switch that controls the fan, and the heater can also be adjusted to provide more hot air. The gas stove pilots are easy to light should they go out, there is at least one big box of wooden matches located in the kitchen. Thanks for the note on the deck, we will make sure to clean it. Glad you enjoyed the house - 106 years old and counting!

Historical gem, needs TLC and to fix the gas leak

  • 2 of 5

Built in 1904, this property has so much potential with just a little TLC. I loved that so much of the property was original but it really should be cleaned better (especially at the rate we paid). Most critical though is that the stove has a gas leak that the on site property manager said is known but they choose not to fix. As we could not find other accommodations for busy 4th of July, my husband turned off the gas for our stay...it still made me very nervous with our children staying there and we had to eat all meals out. The onsite property manager told us to just leave a window open! There was also a strong smell of non-housebroken pet. This place could be awesome- please fix the gas leak, clean up, and replace the sofa and carpeting to get rid of the very strong smell and your property will be so much better!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the comments. Always appreciated and we strive to make our little 110 year old house the best it can be! RE: cleaning. The is the first time I have ever heard of any issue with cleanliness of the house. House has been throughly cleaned, and suspect part of the issue is simply that it is an old house. RE: Gas leak. There is no gas leak (confirmed by a visit from PG&E). Stove in kitchen has 4 pilot lights that are under the stove top and are slightly exposed - when the house is closed up, it may have a faint smell. Simply 'airing out' the house solves the problem. This is the first and ONLY time we've heard this and as such we take it seriously. RE: Pet smell. Again this is the first I've heard of any smell issues and we are assessing. Finally, as the 3rd generation owner of this 110 year old family house, I take great pride in the house and history of the house. It is NOT a hotel, and I don't position it as a luxury or new property - it is a charming early century example of Catalina. We do our vey best to keep it clean and relatable and I simply hate that anyone had a bad time there.
