Romantic 1930’s Austrian Cottage Completely Restored... We spent over a year with skilled Artisians renovating and remodeling having every modern luxury imaginable including a private Outdoor Caldera Spa! One of a kind in the world...

My name is Rick Dyer. I will be your Host when you come and stay at this very special place known as 'The Gingerbread House'...

Come experience the enchantment of The Gingerbread House. The beautiful Ornate wood carvings you will discover throughout this home were created by John Henry Montgomery. Henry spent the final 20 years of his life making this house into a home by creating the detailed woodwork and ornate carvings on display both inside and outside The Gingerbread House.

Mr. Montgomery loved working with wood. We are told: Each day John created wonderful details, ornate corbels and detailed carvings using his small wood-shop located a short distance from the house. The 1934 Gingerbread house was his life. John painstakingly carved, salvaged and recycled all the wood and detail used in this beautiful Austrian style home. The ornate nearly ten foot (10') Wolf-Dragon (see photo) found outside the guest bedroom was his final creation for the Gingerbread house before he died. It was designed to be a bird feeder.

Property is in a heavily treed neighborhood, with Cleveland National Forest nearby. This exposure to nature has a wonderful relaxing effect.

About Rick

Rick Dyer is an inventor. Probably best known as the creator of the hit video game 'Dragon’s Lair'.

Dyer is a licensed REALTOR® and Licensed Real Estate Agent. Rick is a twenty (25) year resident in Julian, California; and considers it a great privilege to live in such a beautiful place...

I live in Julian to unwind, relieve stress and center myself. Our family fell in love with the peace and tranquility of the Mountains, the magnificent location and coziness of our house. For me, it is a magical place, and I love it as much as the first time I discovered Julian.

When I travel up the mountain from San Diego, only a 60 minute drive or so, I can physically feel the layers of stress peel off. By the time I get there I am already in a renewed and relaxed state. Most noticeable is the lack of traffic and sirens, just the quiet sounds of nature. I love the four seasons, each for their own unique character. I originally thought this was a winter resort, but actually it is popular all seasons, and especially summer with Lake Cuyamaca only nine minutes away. I am located on a private lane, away from the highways, surrounded by trees and spectacular Mountain views. I enjoy relaxing on my deck taking in the Mountains, valley, the changing cloud formations in the distance and listening to birds and the wind blowing through the pine trees.

Rick purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Rick chose San Diego County

The beautiful Ornate wood carvings you will discover throughout this home was created by John Henry Montgomery. He spent the final 20 years of his life creating the detailed woodwork and ornate carvings displayed inside and outside the Gingerbread House.

Mr. Montgomery loved working with wood. We are told: Each day John created wonderful details, ornate corbels and detailed carvings using his small woodshop located a short distance from the house. The 1934 Gingerbread house was his life. John painstakingly carved, salvaged and recycled all the wood and detail used in is this beautiful Austrian style home. The ornate nearly nine foot (9') Wolf-Dragon found outside the guest bedroom was his final addition to the Gingerbread house before he died. It was designed to be a bird feeder.

CHRISTMAS comes to Julian every year in an old-fashioned way-like a Norman Rockwell painting which reflects small-town American life and brings the spirit of the holidays to heart. Holiday time in Julian gets closer to that dream than most spots in Southern California where you'll feel a nip in the fresh mountain air, stroll through a quaint, festive town, and maybe catch a glimpse of snow capped mountains.

The holiday season in Julian also offers an opportunity to shop at small boutiques and craft shows, without crowds or lines, for one-of-a-kind gifts. From antiques and collectibles to jewelry and home décor to old fashioned candy and treats, Julian offers a wide variety of unique treasures to discover.

You can greet Santa a couple of times during the season, indulge in a Victorian Christmas tea, sing carols with costumed holiday carolers, sip a cup of hot chocolate or spiced cider. And you can watch the annual Living Nativity scene, cuddle under a blanket while riding down Main Street in a carriage, stay in a cozy bed & breakfast that's all decked out in holiday finery, or even stroll down a quiet country lane.

You can enjoy Julian's holiday through early January.

What makes this cottage unique

Julian was founded following the Civil War, when displaced Confederate Veterans from Georgia headed West to seek their fortunes in a new, mostly unsettled land. Among these were cousins Drue Bailey and Mike Julian, who found a lush meadow between Volcan Mountain and the Cuyamacas to their liking. They were there in 1869 when cattleman Fred Coleman found the first flecks of gold in a creek. It was San Diego County's first and only gold rush.

The town was named Julian, in honor of Mike, who later was elected San Diego County Assessor. The town was never big, at the most boasting a population of about 600---more than reside within the historic district today. Rumor has it that Julian almost became San Diego's county seat.

The gold rush was short-lived, nearly over within a decade. But the pioneers stayed and began farming the rich land. While many crops were planted and animals pastured, Julian proved to be a fine place to grow apples. Apples continue to be produced in Julian. Their sweet, fresh flavor lures thousands to the mountains each fall, when visitors will find fruit stands overflowing with crisp fruit, homemade cider and other delicacies.

Quaint & Rejuvenating Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I had some free time after the 4th of July and decided to get away to a spot neither of us had explored. Julian and the Gingerbread House turned out to be a great find. Not only was there more than enough space for the two of us, "precious" and "really cute" were some of the first words that came out. Maria was awesome in reaching out and contacting us after we had made the reservation. She met us at their office and guided us to the house then gave a wonderfully detailed tour of the house and amenities. She was very quick to respond to a couple of small issues we encountered and handled them very deftly.

We cooked, we BBQ'd, we were in the spa each night relaxing in the silence and staring at the stars and were blessed with a brilliant, bright almost to full moon. The house is decorated beautifully and appointed well, linens were plentiful and plush including robes. Morning coffee and meals on the balcony, it truly was an enchanting little spot to spend a few days.

Julian is also a great little small town to visit with quirky, fun shops and sweet people. It felt a little like stepping back in time. We also had a chance to visit Lake Cuyamaca, rent a boat and get in a little fishing...well a bit more like sunning while we threw bait in the water because we slept in and got to the lake long after the fish' breakfast time. But it was still wonderful spending some time on the water.

Our only two suggestions for Gingerbread is an improved mattress or pillow top for the main bedroom and a better type of privacy shading for the living room, rather than the old school pull down shades. Perhaps shutters or better blinds as to not stop airflow, something that fits the character of the house?

But clearly still a 5 star rating from us and a thumbs up recommend if you're considering a lovely getaway.

Lovely house but even better hosts

  • 5 of 5

I adored the house (and the bathroom is to die for) but the air conditioning broke during my stay. Rick and Maria were amazing. They moved me to another property that was even more secluded (which I loved) and has fantastic views. I would stay in either property again happily.

Perfect weekend getaway for families with young kids

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at one of Rick's properties and we loved staying at the properties both times! The house was very clean with updated appliances. One of the things I love about staying on Rick's properties is the attention to detail--the decor and furniture is comfortable, but the appliances are updated. We came with 3 toddlers between our two families and every person had a great time watching movies, relaxing in the jacuzzi, and exploring the property. Any time we had an inquiry, both Maria and Rick were very responsive to us. Thanks for another wonderful stay!

Julian is a small mountain community in Southern California located at the intersection of California highways 78 and 79, about 50 miles northeast of San Diego. This historic gold-mining town is nestled among oak and pine forests between the north end of the Cuyamaca Range and the south slope of Volcan Mountain.

The entire township of Julian is a Designated Historical District. Its image as an early California frontier town with pioneer store fronts, historic sites and guided tours of Eagle and High Peak Mines accounts for much of its modern appeal. Tourism is Julian's largest industry, followed by cattle raising.

Julian is also unique among Southern California communities for its cold-winter climate, ideal for growing apples. All Julian apples are sold locally as apple pies, apple cider or whole fruit. In October, 10,000 apple pies a week are baked in Julian, when Southern California tourists flock here for the fall colors, cool breezes, frontier atmosphere and its famous Apple Festival.

Julian began as a California mining camp when A.E. (Fred) Coleman discovered placer gold at Coleman Creek in 1869. Drue Bailey founded Julian City in 1870, naming it after his cousin Mike Julian. Bailey and Julian were cousins and ex-confederate soldiers who had left Georgia after the Civil War for the California gold fields.

By the summer of 1872, there were 50 houses, 3 hotels, 4 stores, 2 restaurants, 1 schoolhouse and the "usual number of saloons" to service an an estimated 300 miners working in the area. Numerous hard rock mines were established in 1879 in the Julian and Banner area yielded an estimated $4 to $5 million dollars in gold ore.

Unlike other such camps, Julian survived after the mines played out because of its climate, rich soil and proximity to San Diego. Julian's first newspaper, The Julian Sentinel, began publishing in 1887. Since James Madison first brought the first apple trees to Julian in the early 1870s, Julian apples have won many blue ribbons at places like the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, the St. Louis Fair and the San Francisco World's Fair of 1915. The first Julian apple celebration was held in 1909 , but wasn't followed by another until 1949.

Julian has four moderate but distinct seasons with average annual precipitation of 30 inches. Cool springs and falls contrast with hot days and cool nights during summer and occasional winter snowfall from December to March. Various climates, from desert to high mountains, exist within 25 miles of Julian.
