About Murray Schrotenboer
I run a bicycle touring company and our main thrust is outdoor recreation. Jane and I have been married since 1989, she is one of the most wonderful people you will ever meet. My master's degree and training is in Biology and I worked in a Nature Center during the late 70s. The outdoors and nature have always been my passion. I started an Alternative Energy Business (The Energy Advantage) in the early 80s, and have lived as green as possible. Our Cottage demonstrates my commitment; a solar array provides more electric than we use, the hot water is solar heated, in the winter the cottage is primarily passive solar heated, each room is lit with a skylite, and we recycle everything. I worked for a dozen years as a contractor and built our cottage almost entirely by myself. Everything you see is my design. I am an original owner of The Elkridge Furnace Inn, one of Maryland's best fine dinning restaurants, I know hospitality. I love garden vegetables, berries, fresh fruit, and eggs, so we have a large organic garden, 100 fruit trees and pasture ranged chickens. In the winter we produce Maple Syrup. We would love to be able share our bounty with you. We know what real produce takes like so we almost never buy it in stores, you will be surprised at the difference. I don't go with the crowd. You will find that the cottage is different in many ways from the ordinary. It is what we enjoy, and we have taken a lot of effort to make every detail work. We think you will agree.

Why Murray Schrotenboer chose Clearville
We have a house in Columbia, MD and wanted to buy vacation land in the mountains less than 2 hours away. When we found the land we later named Grouseland, we knew immediately that this was what we wanted. It is exceptionally quiet and peaceful and the views are spectacular. From our campground you can see 4 states and 7 counties, along with 14 different mountains. The land has a field that we use as a garden, orchard and campground, the B&B cottage is located on the pond and we have a cabin on the edge of the ridge looking out only on mountains. This is a place very comfortable for us.
What makes this Cottage unique
This is a place to get away. Relax and rejuvenate. Float your aches and cares away in the hot tub. The stars are incredibly bright, and you will be amazed at how quiet a place can be. Our pond is wonderful for hours of swimming and kayaking or just hanging out in the hammock. A short hike through the woods takes you to our tree house. We invite people to "Forest Bathe" by just relaxing, looking and listening to nature. We give people as much privacy as possible.

Thanksgiving at Grouseland
It was an excellent experience. Our family really enjoyed our stay. Clean and well maintained, prompt reply from Murray when booking, beautiful property and LOVED the hot tub. The only thing that was unpleasant was the smell of the composting toilet.
We are glad that Kim and family enjoyed their stay. The toilet is new and we are getting used to the settings. It is odorless now.
Lots of little details. Thanks for the snacks, extra towels, robes, slippers, coffee. Very cute cabin with nice decor. Would love to go back.
One year anniversary getaway
My girlfriend and I were looking for a little cabin in the woods that we could get peace and quiet with and we found just that in this lovely little place. We'll definitely be back again!
We rented this property for our anniversary weekend. It was absolutely perfect for us. We brought our dog and spent a lot of time walking around the property and exploring the trails. We kayaked in the pond while our dog swam around with us. The fire pit and hot tub are both a nice addition. The owners were so nice and helpful and they really took the time to ensure that we had everything we needed. I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet place to vacation.
Peace and quiet
Very relaxing stay. Property has all the amenities you could ask for. Fresh eggs, hot tub, great fire pit, tons of movies to choose from. Remote location was very peaceful but still able to check out a lot of the areas attractions. Would recommend this property and hopefully we'll be back.
Murray's place is exactly what I needed! Enjoyed every minute! A must stay for anyone looking for a relaxing getaway. Can't wait to go back!
We enjoyed having Quinn and hope to see them again soon.
We are very secluded and away from most everything. The closest towns are 17 - 20 miles. However we are less than an hour from the Flight 93 Memorial, Raystown Lake water park, Fort Bedford, Old Bedford Village, The C&O Tow Path, The Great Allegheny Passage bike trail, Mountain Thunder steam train rides, and the Pike 2 Bike America's only super highway turned into a bike trail with 2 abandoned tunnels, featured in the Washington Post 8/13/17.
