Lovely, quiet home in great neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

I stated here for 8 days in June and didn't want to leave! The place is beautifully appointed and has a lot of character. I especially enjoyed sitting in the garden courtyard and making morning trips to the beach just a few blocks away.

Perfect beach retreat

  • 5 of 5

This property was everything it claimed to be and more. Sitting on a slightly busier street you'd never know it once you walk through the doors. There is a serene outdoor space that is perfect for morning coffee, sun, and dinners al fresco. The kitchen is stocked with pretty much everything you need to cook great meals including the most quiet dishwasher I've ever heard, a 6 burner/2 oven range, and all important coffee machine.

Beds are extremely comfortable and bathrooms big, clean, and luxurious. Huge walk-in closets to store your things (and in our case served as a perfect bedroom for our 2 year old!). The main living space is nicely tucked in the front of the house to keep noise from traveling to sleeping areas. The 2 bedrooms are separated by pocket doors so some sound can travel but we typically sleep with ear plugs and didn't have any issues.

We really appreciated the little items for our 2 year old around the house including a real toddler bed, kids books, the enclosed outdoor space, and even a potty seat! Made him feel much more at home.

Basic beach equipment including snorkels/masks, 2 chairs, umbrella, 2 boogie boards, and 2 bikes are provided for what will likely be frequent trips to the beach. La Jolla Shores beach is right around the corner (5 minute walk) and there's convenient 15 minute parking for gear drop off as well as a free parking lot if necessary. There's also a great playground right on the beach for kids.

The main street of La Jolla Shores is a half block away and has basically everything you need from cute coffee shops/breakfast joints to surf shops to a mini mart. For bigger shopping trips there are plenty of markets only a 10 minute drive away including Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and a basic supermarket.

The Birch aquarium is also right around the corner which we loved and San Diego is a 15 minute drive. We visited the zoo this time which was incredible.

All in this was the perfect getaway and we would highly recommend staying here for your beach vacation! Can't wait to go back!

Comfortable Beautiful Home

  • 4 of 5

My family enjoyed your home. It was just perfect. Nice open floor plan, had everything you need to enjoy our time at the beach. Kitchen was excellent and had everything you need to cook what ever you like. The weather was bit gloomy the first few days of our stay but the house was so nice we didn't mind. We would definitely rent again. Thanks for a great week.

8168 became instantly a comfortable home away from

Home for the three months we rented it. Angie and Tony were caring and friendly.

The home is well furnished and kitchen is lovely to work in. The best part of course is the 5 minute walk to

The beautiful beach and the local street a block away of good restaurants

We walked regularly on the beach which at this time of the year felt as if it was our private beach

The courtyard is well kept and soothing to be able to see it at all times from every part of the house

We hired the young lady who has worked with this family for 20 years cleaning house . She did our laundry was very pleasant and helpful

We miss being there but it was time to go: we hope it will be available again as we surely would like a repeat stay at this lovely happy home

Our children came from

The East coast at various times and enjoyed their stays very much too

Thank you Angie for your special care

We wish a happy stay for whoever is lucky enough to stay at 8168.

A nice retreat minutes from the beach

  • 4 of 5

Overall our stay was quiet enjoyable and addressed the bulk of our needs. The Chens were quite accommodating. We needed a crib and/or pack n play for our toddler, which was provided on the premises. Being unseasonably cold, the house took a while to heat up and we had difficulty with the heating. Normally this isn't an issue in sunny SoCal, but we unfortunately experience a very cold evening. We were able to contact the Chens and clear up the confusion the next day. In La Jolla village there are numerous stores, restaurants, and cafe within walking distance to the VRBO and a nice playground at La Jolla beach. Galaxy Taco is a must and the Shore House cafe is a quaint coffee joint with a chill SoCal vibe. All in all our stay was very pleasant, and we highly recommend this VRBO for small families interested in visiting the area.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the review. We had the heater unit checked out after you left. There was a latch that had been broken that was causing the heater to shut off as a safety precaution. The latch has been fixed and the heater got a tune-up and cleaning. We are certain that your next stay will be comfortable. Thanks again for choosing our home for your stay in La Jolla.

Great location, updated, comfortable and super clean

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a wonderful stay at this house. It's just a few blocks from the beach and was nicely updated with a modern look, which is hard to find when you're that close to the beach/town. The homeowners are very easy to deal with and responsive. We loved the private courtyard out back- it was the perfect place to have morning coffee and relax. Definitely recommend this house!

La Jolla Shores
Car: not necessary

Known as 'The Jewel' of San Diego, La Jolla features luxury homes, fine dining and upscale shopping that rivals Rodeo Drive. But the real jewels in La Jolla are the beaches, which are freely available for visitors and locals alike. The La Jolla coastline varies dramatically - from 300 foot sea cliffs, to rocky reefs, to golden sand coves, exploring La Jolla’s beaches is an exhilarating and inspiring experience. La Jolla Shores is a mile long crescent of prime sand beach favored by active beach goers of all interests. Anchored by the Scripps Institute of Oceanography pier, this is a busy swimming area popular among families and surfers alike. Shielded by La Jolla Bay, it is also used as a launching ground for scuba diving and kayaking. At night it's alive with the glow of beach fires and the energy of young adults socializing. Fortified by 300 foot sea cliffs is Torrey Pines City Beach, home to Black's Beach, is located at the northern most point of La Jolla. Difficult and hazardous to access for the public, this spot is favored by local surfers and body boarders.

La Jolla Cove is the north facing point on the seaward end of the cliffs that form a small deep water bay here. The cliffs are riddled with sea caves of special fascination to kayakers who paddle over from La Jolla Shores Beach.

La Jolla Cove itself has a fine little beach, on busy summer days, visitor and locals will flock to the area for terrific swimming and snorkeling afforded by The Cove's sheltered waters and abundance of bright orange Garibaldi fish and other tame marine life (The Cove has long been protected from fishing of any kind). Scuba divers and ocean swimmers use The Cove as a safe point of entry and exit. No surfboards, boogie boards or rafts of any kind are allowed. There is an excellent grass park adjacent to The Cove with bathrooms, showers, picnic tables, a paved pedestrian walkway and several public gazebos.

The Children’s Pool, located close to downtown La Jolla, is a small cove protected by a concrete breakwater wall originally built to create a safe swimming area for children. Now, however, the area is a protected area frequented by seals and sea lions who beach themselves on the sand with their young.

If you continue south, you'll arrive at Hospitals, which is a great reef but a not so great beach. However, at low tide there are wonderful tidepools and great shelling all along the coast here. The conditions don't often cooperate, but when they do, it's the best dive site in town, with dramatic undersea arches and ledges chock full of lobster. At the south end by the gazebo is the Hospitals surf spot, the northernmost of La Jolla's reef breaks.

The road leaves the coast between Horseshoe and Windansea, which prevents most people from ever finding Marine Street Beach, the prettiest, whitest beach in all of San Diego. As such, the beach here is dominated by teens and locals. Marine Street's claim to fame is its wicked shorebreak otherwise known as 'womp.' Bodysurfers and bodyboarders get short, deep tube rides as the waves hit the steep shelf and unload onto the shore. There are several nameless surfbreaks on the reefs at either end of the beach - all fickle, all dangerous, all heavily localized, but also very, very, very good when they're on...

Windansea is the next beach traveling southward. Made famous by Tom Wolfe's story 'The Pump House Gang,' Windansea was and is all about fitting in. The break is an easy left/right peak that breaks on any tide, any swell and practically any day of the year. It's accordingly crowded, and the crowd accordingly competitive. Swimming is best on the south half of the beach between Kolmar Street and Big Rock Reef. Lifeguards supervise near the grass shack at the end of Bonaire Street in summertime.

Downtown is just a short 20 minute drive south on the 5 freeway. San Diego's thriving downtown districts offer a plethora of options for shopping, dining and cultural attractions, all accessible by foot or by trolley. Modern and historic buildings stand side-by-side, in the downtown historic Gaslamp District, housing shops and boutiques, trendy nightclubs, rooftop bars and fine dining restaurants. During the day, families can enjoy various cultural attractions, like The New Children's Museum, or take in a baseball game at Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, or catch a ride on the trolley to Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo. After dark, the area transforms into a sophisticated playground for adults. With an endless variety of posh night clubs, sizzling music venues and sky-high rooftop bars, you are bound for an adventurous and memorable night on the town.
